Title: Instructor Boot Camp
Post by: PHenry on May 22, 2017, 11:17:24 AM
It has been brung to my attention that I have not offered an IBC in some time. Have Ford will travel. Venues that offer live-fire for the mock event portion are preferable, but not at all critical. Class area needed and considering the time of year we are headed into - AC or lots of fans and air movement would be most beneficial.

Let's select a venue and get it on the calendar! I could lose my red hat. ~~:)

I offer the Smallbore Range at PMRPC in Palm Bay. Depending on the date chosen we may be able to reserve the air conditioned "Pole Barn."

TM,
Can u look into dates when the moons align? (small bore and pole barn at same time). That just might work. A fantastic new instructor on her way up asked me why there were no IBCs on the books fer me. Humbling it were.  :wb:

If there is a man who dares criticize you, I'll bet my annual salary he's not fit to polish your boots.

Count me in.  If I can come learn under my friend and mentor, I'll be there.

Looks like the Pole Barn is available Saturday all day and Sunday until 1:00 on July 8-9, or  Aug 12-13. Smallbore Range is open. Florida AS calendar is also open. Alabama has KD and IBC on the books for Aug 11-13.

Another option is to push it back to late September / Early October, giving people more time to plan their schedules to attend. Myakka has an air conditioned classroom and we could use one of the cowboy ranges for live fire. Doesn't Hernando also have space inside that "museum" building?

Good options by Dwight. Palm Bay can also support Sep 2-3 but the remainder of Sep and Oct have conflicts in Pole Barn.

Hi PHenry,

I can get a room that will fit 20 at Manatee Gun & Archery (MGAC). It has air conditioning, fans, a flat screen TV, white boards, and a microwave. Tables and chairs already there. I can get it for just about any weekend from now through October. Let me know and I will set it up.

Rich,
Whenever possible, I like to have a live-fire mock Appleseeds at IBCs and the cowboy range would do. Mostly about dates and geography to attain best effect - max attendance and covering area of greatest need. Will think on it as time allows.

Many thanks for the excellent offers my brothers.

OK, finally got a chance to look at this. Sadly, I cannot do any of the dates offered. My own schedule does not open up even slightly until mid-September. Either venue would be fine - just need to determine where IBC is needed most and potential attendance. As I am the primary problem, I'll offer some dates that are currently open for me:

9/23-24
10/7-8
10/28-29
11/25-26

Also, I do already have a three day IBC on books for home range - Ramseur, NC August 4, 5, 6, with KD on Friday and standard IBC Sat / Sunday. Three'oEight and I will drive up together and MinuteMom may join us if she can work it out. If you've never been to the home range - it is a pilgrimage not to be missed. This will be an "old-school" IBC in the manner of my early mentors. All nuts and bolts of instructing with emphasis on detail and precision. It interests me that I often hear "You mean there is a standard way for intro-ing the AQT?" Yes there is and I can recall former MI Dragonwood held little patience for any deviation from the standard. Same for all demos - by the numbers - no ad lib tolerated.

Once we get a date I would encourage all who plan to attend PM me with your email addy and I will send a package of "cheat sheets" to help you prep - a relative luxury I was not afforded at my first IBC.  ~~:)

We can get a Senior Instructor-RBC/IBC to cover just about any date. We have enough of them here in Florida.

I can attend on these dates:

9/23-24
10/7-8

Oct. 28-29 there is a shoot in Gainesville, and Nov. 25-26 is Thanksgiving weekend, so probably not good for many people, including myself.

my place is available.
live fire, no rfanbe obligations or controls.
we run the whole show. no cost to anyone.
can sleep 10 in the house, couple dozen in the shop, 50 or 60 on the property.

QuoteNov. 25-26 is Thanksgiving weekend, so probably not good for many people, including myself.

Ten years and I still cain't get past doing that. Lesson for all new SBs when ranges offer you dates. know that they often offer only the ones nobody else wanted. Cannot recall how many Halloweens, Superbowls, etc I have worked.  :wb:

So, by the generosity of the cadre, we now have three potential venues. Smoak's is fairly centrally located and offers cheap accoms on site. Now if we could just get Archie to bring / make the low country boil.  ^-^

No AS events on the Florida calendar Sep 23-24. Since I'm a member of the leisure set I don't know how many people actually get Columbus Day (October 9, 2017) off from work. It's a Federal holiday, but not a Florida holiday. This could work to advantage as some people may not be in a rush to get home on Sunday. There is, however, a shoot in Pensacola that weekend.

Quotethere are a great many red hats that could use the refresher

And some MIs as well. I study hard for these events - I study what former MI Juniorbirdman put to paper 10 years ago. Early on JB created what he called his "CLR" - like the stuff that removes rust from pipes. He said we could all use to knock the rust off prior to an event. He was one of the best instructors I have ever seen and even he needed a refresher - we all do. In order to maintain standards, we need perfect practice!

OK, we got a killer venue and a good date - time to ring the bell and get the word out. Calling all IITs and any red hat who wants to spend some time with great people. Let's roll!

Hi Sir, I was in Gainesville and saw you score awhile back. We would be happy to plug an orange hat on you and point you the way to glory. If you can drive over to the shoot in St Augustine this coming next weekend I have a hat and a handshake for you!

Here is a link to the St Augustine shoot:

PM me on the forum with any questions. If you can make it over next weekend I can walk you through the whole process.

Yeaaaahhhhhh 300blackoutguy!  Come on and join the cadre!  You won't regret it!!  I know BC offered to help you out - I would be happy to as well if you can't make it to the shoot this weekend.  And yes, you should plan on coming to the IBC in October - it will make you a better instructor.  You don't have to be an instructor to sign up.  Just go to the events page where you would sign up for a regular shoot and sign up.  There's no cost!!  What are you waiting for?

Indeed huzzah 300blackoutguy. Being an instructor is a very rewarding challenge. By teaching others within the Appleseed venue, you will find that it does improve ones own shooting &  this is the BEST vehicle for spreading the message of Liberty. You also get to hang out with some uber fantastic folks:Appleseeders!
We welcome you sir!

Please remind the up and coming Blue Hats that are looking at the Orange Hat on the horizon that they too are allowed to attend IBC and it helps them immensely take care of things including RSO qual at events. We need more up and coming Orange Hats, so this is a great source of new leaders coming up.

Ok all,

forgive my ignorance, what do I have to bring along to an IBC except the manual? Rifle and ammo seem superfluous? We just running mock drills, telling the three strikes, IMC, etc.?
Does performance there count for graduating to another level?

Thank you for enlightening me!

Good Morning Jerry2017,
Check out the FAQ page in TIPS for more info about the IBC.
https://appleseedinfo.org/tips/faq.php#events05
It doesn't hurt to bring your rifle, ammo and other shooting gear. You may get a chance to shoot--certainly if you arrive on Friday.
Otherwise you will need personal comfort items such as bug spray, sunscreen, hat, rain gear, light jacket, folding chair, plus camera, notebook and pencils. You may want to audio record some of the presentation too.
Come well rested with your running shoes on--the weekend goes way too fast!
Cheers!
Dennis

I really need to check the forum more often!  I am already committed to the shoot in Pensacola that week-end -- would LOVE to attend and I am off on Monday so would work out great for us since it's a long drive.  If Pensacola doesn't see more shooters sign-up may try to make the IBC - can always use an IBC and Smoak's place is awesome!  Won't know 'til last minute though - last Pensacola shoot - there was very few signed up and then at the last minute we ended up with a full line.  Look forward to having some opportunities to work with some of your southerners!!!

OK, we are gettin close. Working on details now. Looks like Henry has a turkey fryer for making Archie's famous "low country boil". I have a roll of white paper for serving. All we need is a recipe and someone with a clue how to do it. I can also bring at least two gas burners for cooking breakfast. Need to know who might be interested in communal dining for breakfast Sat & Sun, as well as dinner Sat night. I don't know if Archie will make this one - he has been working in PA. I can get recipe from him and the how to do it right (all about the order you add the raw food to the boiling water as I recall - potatoes first and seafood last.

So chime in - who wants to eat?  ^-^

To all Melrose IBC attendees and instructors,

I will attach a couple of "cheat sheets" to help us be ready. Please print them out and study up (I am). Believe it or not, there is a SOP for all points of instruction at Appleseeds events. It was all laid down by the original master instructors corps long ago. While the SB has some latitude (shoot boos discretion), when it comes to demos and even announcing the AQT - there is a specific procedure intended to maximize simplicity and retention. I've been around long enough to have see how the people who created the program did it and I always do my best to pass it on the same way I was taught.

Things like "booger hook on the bang switch" or "Captain Hook trigger finger", while entertaining, are not a part of what we do. It is a distraction at best. At worst, it reduces retention in the student and the number of people who will make score at an event.

Look forward to seeing everyone.

Excellent point sir. We'll keep an eye on it. I like NOAA best.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/175742.shtml?cone#contents

Smoak has a huge shop where we do all of the class stuff and it could also be used for a non-firing "mock event", but if it going to be a Cat1 on wrong side of twist - not a good idea. Last Cat1 I went thru recently was on "good" side and it made a serious mess of my area.

Timberwolf, there is no choice.. sit home and get wet, come to IBC and get filled. Hain't no choice where I be from...

I am bringing breakfast stuff and some lunch stuff, as well as salad to go with the LCB. Do you guys need crabs found? I probably can get some down here, but need to know asap.

Smoak and Cable Guy - let me know if you want fresh herbs for the LCB, I am sure I can snag them at the Farm before I head up.

Thank you stoneknives for running the sheets, one less thing for me to get ready.

Really tickled to spend the weekend with some of the finest people in the South!! Appleseeders!

Please ya'll remember that not everyone knows everyone else, so please introduce yourself and welcome faces you do not recognize. I for one do not know all of you by sight, and I venture several of us are in the same category.

As for the storm, ya'll, Smoak's place is high and dry, with quite a bit of protection. Nate rips through we will probably be pretty darn safe, and for some of us, it can not flood any more or take down any more trees, so to heck with staying home!!

So very much looking forward to this weekend with all ya'll!!

Tim has some shirmp already cleaned and ready, I will be hitting sams club and publix today for supplies.  For Breakfast we have bacon and the man hole cover, Randy always bring farm fresh eggs, and they really do taste better.

Friday night I was thinking chicken paella plus whatever else we all come up with.  If anyone else has ideas or wants to have something special bring it , I don't mind cooking for everyone.

When we slosh outta here, are there specific food items we need to pick up? Of if everything is covered, who can we reimburse?

Food Update,
I have everything to make Chicken paella and Italian chicken stew for Friday night, should be enough to feed about 10.

As for the boil I have the potatoes sausage , seasoning garlic etc, Tim said he was going to bring shrimp. So anymore seafood we can find and CORN , my publix had no ears of corn ?? So if anyone can find some between the moon and new your city , the best that you can do , is grab it.

We are bringing some bacon and 20 sausage links to throw in for group breakfast ala man hole cover, Its a tradition you know.

If I missed anything let me know.

Hey Todd,
I'm bringing parts to prepare my wife's sausage & egg casserole to share for Sunday morning. 18 eggs and 2 lb of sausage in a 9x13 pan gives you an idea.  I'll just have to talk Smoak into putting it in the oven for an hour before breakfast.

Ok, let's see -

RG and 9mm - we will catch the food, ya'll have given and given and have enough to worry about right now.

CG - you rock. I will see if I can locate corn tomorrow. I am bringing two loaves of fresh homemade rye caraway bread for dinner.

Breakfast - bringing 2 loaves of cinnamon, one with raisins one without for grape allergies noted. Also potatoes already cooked and ready to cut for home fries.

Salad for dinner as well with home made dressing.

Guntuckian, well, tornados sounds about normal any more...we'll just shoot at 'em!

Sounds like a feast to me!

Let me know if ya'll need anything else -

I won't be able to arrive before late Sat AM, sorry.

Re weather, most recent NOAA reports attached. Anyone have experience how much wind and rain to expect in our area?

Arriving Saturday morning around 7:30 AM.  Staying in hotel Friday and Saturday nights.

Weather should be fine, overcast, for the most part, with just feeder bands blowing through from time to time with wind and rain.  No tornadoes are now forecast.  They will be farther west.

But, where are the IITs?   :DH:

It's gonna be a great weekend for Liberty!   :F

Smoak, I should be arriving this evening before sundown. Not quite sure what time exactly, as I have to take care of things at work first before I leave for the day. Its a 4 hour drive for me, I'm aiming for leaving here around 1-2 PM roughly.
