Title: Palm Bay, June 18-19
Post by: malabar on June 20, 2016, 03:19:42 PM
This was the kind of shoot you can have only in Florida. First we had a couple of folks drop out because of the heat. The rainy season came early and flooded the range and the parking lot.  Folks had to park out on the road and hike their gear in. But the worse was the pissed-off, aquatic fire ants, floating in the ankle-deep water.  Shooters had to work their way down the far right-hand-side of the field where it was still dry to get to the target line, and the cross over to their backer.

There was tropical-storm level rain Saturday night, and winds so fierce they blew the pora-potties over.

But that didn't deter our shooters.  We had 16 folks turn out, and six of them shot score. Massive improvements in score.   Cal shot high score of the weekend with a whopping 247.

And to reward them for coming back Sunday morning, there was a present stretching across the sky over the range.

You may be tough but are you FLORIDA tough? Aquatic fire ants? Sounds like a very successful shoot despite the obstacles. Congrats to all the new Riflemen!

No fair weather patriots this weekend!  These were patriots who knew very well what they were about!  Some of the worst weather I have ever seen at an Appleseed, yet we had 6 shooters go on and shoot the score!  Fantastic improvements were made by all who came out despite the weather, the wind, the heat, the aquatic fire ants, the blown over port-a-potty weather, and the hike into and out of the range after having to park on the road and wade through water.  I came away feeling that America is in safe hands!  We could not have done this well save that our Instructor crew was a well-regulated crew, i.e., a crew that functioned superbly well, and worked like family.

I even had to wipe my Brown Bess and KY Longrifle both down, with cloth and oil, to remove the beginnings of rust, after being out all day long in this weather!  Huzzaaah!

There was a pot of gold at the end of the target line, and 6 shooters found it this weekend, shooting the score!  What a weekend!

A hard working crew. We had shade and a breeze--as you can see from the flags flapping parallel to the ground.
