Title: AR group buy
Post by: smoakingun on May 26, 2016, 06:59:07 PM
I have been presented with an opportunity to do something cool.
A shop in Jacksonville does short runs of high quality AR's. If 25 or more of us want to place an order, he will stamp any logo or picture we want into the receiver. Maybe Issac Davis or a colonial flag? A stripped upper, lower, and your choice of length key mod rail,$180.00 If interested, PM me. I have 3 weeks to place the order.

I was headed for Issac Davis or some revolutionary flag

This receiver was done for a group from the Jacksonville Sheriff office.
The fit and finish of these receivers is exceptional.

I'm in. Just tell me where to send the money and where to tell my ffl to send his stuff.

Do you have weights for the length options on the rail?  I'm assuming 10", 13", 15"?
Would also like a weight on the bbl nut. The older I get the more I appreciate a light rifle.

Title: Re: AR group buy
Post by: smoakingun on May 26, 2016, 07:57:40 PM
I'll have to find out weights. As to length, those are the options

Awesome. Thx for putting this together!

If we do get to do a custom serial # I'd like to call 04191775. Or 41975 if that fits the format.  If we can't do the serial # that's okay too.

Post by: Specialkay on May 27, 2016, 10:12:40 AM
It would appear to be a very good deal. I've always wanted to build an AR from scratch, and it would appear this would make a great opportunity.

What's everyone thinking for the logo?

What's everyone's opinion on the rail, 10", 13" or 15"? I'm leaning more toward the 10", to keep weight down, but not sure . . .

An Issac Davis stamp would look mighty fine indeed. I fancy a 15" rail for me....

I'm in for two. I like the Appleseed logo I use as my picture.

If custom serial numbers are available, put me down for 04191775 and 07041776.  :)
Title: Re: AR group buy
Post by: Specialkay on May 27, 2016, 11:29:39 AM
Isacc Davis in front of the Grand Old Union Flag or Bennington Flag would be my first choice.
Project appleseed logo would be my second.
Title: Re: AR group buy
Post by: spitstickler on May 27, 2016, 11:46:46 AM
I'm not too picky on what Revolutionary War era image we use.

It seems like pretty much any flag would work. (I'd throw in the Bedford flag as well as the Pine Tree image from the pine tree flag, and Son's of Liberty flags as potentials) Isaac Davis image pulled from the RWVA logo would work, or the new AS logo would work for me as well.

However, I think mixing two or more of these together will muddy the whole thing up and make it harder to see what it is. I'd prefer keeping the image somewhat simple.

I'm in for one (wish I had the cash for more than one)!

I agree with spitstickler that we should choose one logo (perhaps with a phrase above/below). I'm a fan of Cpt. Davis, but there are a lot of great suggestions. As long as it makes it "Appleseed," I'm happy!

I'll be following this thread to see what happens. This looks awesome!

There seems to be interest. That's good. So far we have 14 interested. We need 25 to make the run. I am considering a single image, Isaac Davis or a flag, an overlayed image, like the new logo, would just muddy things up, a single image come out clear.
For everyone interested, I will get with the manufacturer next week and get details on how he handles shipping and sales out of town and out of state.

We have an inactive instructor who is a graphic artist.  He created our Michigan patch.  I'm sure he could modify the logo so it would come out cleaner, as long as the AOC/Patent Guy sign off on it.

Just a suggestion. ...

The upper rifle has the custom Michigan logo, modified from the patch:

Interesting deal.  A couple of questions, I don't have any experience with AR's or building them.  What caliber are you talking about?  What all is included with your price?

Thanks

Post by: B.C. on May 31, 2016, 10:50:15 AM
Hello PRP,

The AR can be 223 or 556 depending on the chamber in the barrel you will need to purchase for a build. Smoak is getting us these parts only for 180.00:

Stripped upper receiver
Stripped lower receiver
Free float rail in your choice of length
Barrel nut
Gas block

I recommend you get a barrel chambered in 556 - you'll be able to use 223 and 556. A barrel chambered in 223 will only be able to shoot 223 and not 556.
Watch this video for all the details of an AR build:

I hope this answers your questions.

You can also build a 300 Blackout on this Lower/Upper but I would stick with the 5.56 for my first AR.
Title: Re: AR group buy
Post by: Agrivere on May 31, 2016, 07:39:13 PM
You can count me in for one, with a rifle length rail.

For those looking for barrels to go with this, I highly recommend a 223 Wylde chamber. It is basically the same as a NATO chamber, and can shoot 5.56 ammo, but has a slightly shorter leade which improves accuracy. It really is the best of both worlds.
Title: Re: AR group buy
Post by: henschman on May 31, 2016, 10:33:34 PM
I'm in for one set.  I have a service rifle build planned that this will be perfect for.
I don't really need the handguard, but I'll take one in 15" or whatever the longest length is.

As far as roll mark goes, I would like something along the lines of the oval patch.

The list of all the calibers you could build a rifle for on this receiver set is a pretty long one.

If we're talking .223/5.56 chambers, I say 5.56 for 2A purpose rifles, .223 Wilde (or any of the other match chambers various mfg's offer that are pretty much the same thing) for competition rifles.  There is really no point to a plain .223 chamber.

I don't intend to derail or hijack this thread, but a few discussions of choices on build have been thrown around, as well as help on how to actually build an AR15. But does anyone know a good article, or source, that accurately summarizes the pros and cons of the different build types? A1-A4/Flattop upper, different lengths, twist ratios, grips, ect.

I can't decide between building a carbine and a rifle, or a match and a plinkering gun.

One of each!  ^:)^

All joking aside, a flat top upper offers a lot more flexibility with sighting systems. Want irons? Throw on some flip-ups or a carry handle.   Want a red-dot or a magnified optic? ...just put it on. If you use a name brand QD mount, you'll even be able to return to zero and switch between glass options. (YMMV, but the Larue mounts have saved me a ton of range trips and expense to re-zero after an optics change. They have easily paid for themselves in this regard.)

Most of these choices you speak of, and others, come down to personal preference and what the intended purpose of the firearm is. There are lots of videos on youtube discussing pros and cons of barrel length, profile, gas system length, muzzle devices, triggers, etc. Also be aware of trends as they are constantly changing. Sometimes for the good, but often because someone with a big name totes out a new piece of gear.

The great thing about the AR15 platform, is that you can try something, and if you don't like it, it's relatively easy to change. Parts changes are for the most part, very straight forward and require minimal tools.

Title: Re: AR group buy
Post by: spitstickler on June 01, 2016, 04:43:48 PM
I like the oval patch. However, It'd be pretty small on the same side as the serial number. The space available seems to be somewhere about .75" high to give you some idea.

I'm okay with that, but I don't know how fine of detail they can accomplish. Smoakinggun would just have to ask and see if this is doable or not.

edit:  Added mockup of Rifleman with Betsy Ross as alternative. Personally, I like the look of this better. Simple and straightforward.

Yep, and you can even have multiple upper receiver/barrel assemblies for use with the same lower/buttstock assembly; swapping them is as easy as pushing out the takedown pins. I'd love to get in on this deal, but I've already built an A2 service rifle and a 20" hbar plinker (by accident) this year. If there's a chance to get just the lower I'd be all over it, but don't want to complicate things for the OP.

I am playing with the idea of using this set to build up a 6.5 Grendel.  I have heard good things about their accuracy.  The downside is that there is not much brass out there and what I can find is pretty pricey.  Anyone have one of these?  Is it worth the cost and trouble?

I like the Rifleman badge as a stamp, but we would need to ensure the parts only go to Rifleman much like trying to get a Rifleman item through the AS store. Hence I would likely not choose this option. Who knows whose hands a Rifleman stamped receiver could end up going to in the future.

Isaac Davis is nice; however, the Isaac Davis logo is largely a function of the RWVA which we are moving away from as far as branding. That is why our new T-Shirts have replaced the Isaac Davis logo with the Appleseed logo which has the Isaac Davis's silohette.

I am going to strongly advocate for the current approved Appleseed logo to be used as it will remain current for a longtime to come, does not have to be exclusive to Rifleman, and promotes Appleseed.

I think I am going to take the one with my special serial number and build a 'Mona Lisa' tribute rifle with the wood stocks just like the poster. Then I might just sell raffle tickets for it to raise $ for Appleseed. If I raffle it off next year at NRAAM for say ... $25  per ticket, I might be able to raise ~$5K for Appleseed. The possibilities are endless. :pop:

The sample pics the OP gave of the lower they did for the Sheriff's Dep't looks more like a roll mark than a laser engraving like some of the examples that have been posted.  I think something along the lines of a simplified oval patch design with "Project Appleseed" instead of "Revolutionary War Veterans' Association" would make a great roll mark.

So it looks like the deadline for the order is a week from today...

My vote at this point is for the current Appleseed logo. I think that it is easily recognizable and probably would turn out well on a receiver, as well as being unique to Appleseed. Has anyone done a count of how many commitments have been made, and what logo we're leaning toward? I think it'd be nice to start finalizing some of these details in the coming week.
Title: Re: AR group buy

Agreed.  I would go for the Logo as well, in the same reverse styling as 3o8 indicated in post 26.  That said, I would vote for only the logo portion of that, enlarged, removing the date, flag, and 'Rifleman' from it.

The flag and date for simplicity, and Rifleman because that should be reserved for those who have earned the patch, and that is not something that was being discussed for this (and that does not even get into transfers).

Out of curiosity, is this going to be a "one time print" and never seen again? Or is this just meant to be "round one"?

If multiple rounds are anticipated, having "Rifleman" incorporated becomes cumbersome to manage, and having a more consistent AS logo makes sense. If this is just a one time order, incorporating a more detailed and less "consistent" image doesn't really become that much of an issue, as long as that's what the majority of members that are placing an order today want.

I just want to make a distinction that if I make a choice on a logo, am I making a choice only for those who have said they want one and are able to voice their opinion? Or am I making a choice for future people who may want one later on, but aren't able to express an opinion today?

Very cool graphic. I like it!

This is just the standard RWVA logo. The only issue with this image is that it's not an original vector graphic and I think Isaac Davis looks a little weird when you reverse the image like this. It's from something I essentially "vectorized" and re-created for my own purposes. I don't even know if original vector art exists for it but I would highly recommend trying to utilize that instead of this image if it's available. As for my opinion, I like the other design better (with the new logo and the flag fading into it (which can easily be tweaked a little, to give it the best possible appearance when etched.)

Smoak,

Apologies if I am out of line, but it has now been 5 weeks since your initial email.  Re-reading your initial post, it appears that the order would have had to be placed 2 weeks ago.

Can you confirm if this is still a reality, and if so, provide timelines when you will be reaching out for additional needed info (FFL, shipping address for shipping costs, etc.)?  I am just trying to determine if continuing to wait will be a useful endeavor, or if I should start looking elsewhere (I have a nice collection of parts at home, and nothing to connect them to - They are getting lonely ;D)

Ok. Followup time.
I wanted to give folks a chance to get in and see wh what intrest there was. We have almost 50. That'll do.
I had a face to face with the shop today. Because of the high interest, we will not be piggybacking on someone elses order, we will be placing our own. By the end of the week I should have a an order sheet set up with the manufacturer and you will be able to sign up for whatever combination of parts you want

FL guys, you rock!
I lived in Jax for 26 years... I sure miss it.
Now I'm deep behind enemy lines in the peoples republic of Maryland.
We have a lot of ranges doing Appleseed though. We're bailing as fast as we can!

I'd like "in" on two of those receivers please.

Well, I'm out.   The Massachusetts Attorney General just issued a re-interpretation of our laws to classify ALL semi-auto rifles as assault weapons, and are therefore BANNED.  None can be sold or transferred after today.

Any Semi-Auto rifle or shotgun.  The language is vague enough that it even targets our beloved 10/22... which is now classified as a 'weapon of war' according to The People's Republic of Massachusetts'.

Birthplace of the revolution... and the death of freedom.

If you're of a mind to vote with your feet, we'd welcome you with open arms here in TX!

In the spirit of keeping everyone up to date, here we go.
The last logo I posted will be the logo. I am currently waiting on final pricing, but the person that took the order does not forsee a change in price.
Once I get pricing, I will post an order sheet. You will be free to order whatever combination of parts you wish.
This will be a single payment transaction. That means your order, funds, and FFL info will come to me. I will submit the total order, and the parts should be run in september/ October.
If you are going to need a rifle shipped, you will have to cover the shipping costs. If you can, groups of folks have parts shipped to a single FFL will save money.
Once I get pricing, I believe we will have a two week window in which to get the order placed

I just got word from the shop. The supplier of their castings is backed up. It will be 3 to 4 weeks to get castings. They will let me know when the castings are available. When they become available, they will be able to give me firm pricing and we can place oor order

Hi smoakingun, I know you're waiting for the final numbers to come in, but to clarify, the $180 estimate you mentioned back on July 5 included the stripped upper, lower and barrel nut, gas block and choice of handguard?

I'm also interested in getting on the list for a set, once the parts are ready to order. Please keep me in the loop (I've tried to PM smoakingun, but I'm guessing that my new status on the forum is blocking that).

You could buil it like the redcoats have to as a straight pull.  Just use an undrilled barrel and a little machining on the bolt and upper.  Thinking about doing it to a 300 blackout to hunt in PA with.
