Title: NRA BIT + Instructor Courses
Post by: 308LIBERTY on April 05, 2016, 10:36:33 AM
Do we have anyone in the state of FL who is certified to teach the NRA instructor courses?

Yes, we've got a group of instructors down at Palm Bay. In fact, they are running an NRA instructors bootcamp the next two weekends up at Camp Lanoche.

If I didn't have a shoot to prepare for, I would try and get up there for that. Let us know if they do it again soon.

You can also contact Gordon Despot. His website is www.NRAinstructors.org. My understanding is that he can teach any NRA course.

Just to be clear: www.nrainstructors.org is the national NRA instructors site.

I'll keep you updated on any other classes be offered.

I talked to Gordon Despot today, who is local. If we can get a commitment from at least 4, he can teach us out of the range in Clearwater or Lakeland and shave at least $50 off the going rate, including all range fees and books. (would make it about $250) If we get 8 or more he can work out an even better deal. It's a 2 day course. It looks like the first weekend that would be suitable would be July 9-10 in Lakeland. As far are pre-req's go, you only need the initial phase I Basics of Pistol Shooting which is all online and $60. Phase II is not necessary, since we are essentially being taught to teach phase II ourselves. Once I get a commitment from at least 4 people, I can start wrangling dates. Who's in?

BTW, I've also got several leads on other training councilors now. Thanks for all the emails and input!

There is a possibility of July 9-10 in Lakeland. If I can get one more signed up, I can finalize the plans with the instructor. Stone knives and I have both taken the online portion (Basics of Pistol Shooting) already. You don't need to do the practical part to sign up for the instructor class. (He knows we are already instructors, so he's not requiring it) He seems fairly flexible with dates and the 2 ranges he uses most often are the Wyoming Antelope Club in Clearwater and a range in Lakeland.

Dwight any luck ? I will register and do Phase 1 online as soon as we know we can book Phase 2.

You don't need phase 2. We are essentially skipping it because it will be covered in the instructor portion. Only thing I need to finalize plans is to have one more person commit.

There is an RSO and shotgun class coming soon to Palm Bay.  Once you get BIT, you can do that, too.  RSO can be done online once you have BIT, but it is $125 online and about $50 less if done in person.

I used my NRA Certified Pistol and Rifle Instructor status to teach at the air gun range at the NRA annual meeting in Louisville while wearing Appleseed gear.  The next day, several of the air gun shooters came by the Appleseed booth and signed up for Appleseeds!  They did not know that you could sight in an air rifle using IMC!  My rifles at the air gun range were the only ones sighted in to hit 1-inch targets at 25 yards at the air gun range!  Was running PCP Gamo Coyote  and Benjamin Marauder rifles with 10 round magazines.  I picked them because they were most like Appleseed rifles.

And, just this week, I discovered that indoor ranges require NRA Certs for doing Appleseeds and Appleseed Pistol Clinics, due to their insurance requirements.  Am already working on getting indoor ranges ready for 2017.

Cable___Guy and I attended the BIT and basic pistol instructor course last weekend. Gordon went above and beyond, to make sure we have a good foundation in pistol instruction. On to the next step. I would like to put together a list of all FL Appleseed instructors, who are also certified in NRA Basic Pistol. Anyone interested in a road trip to NC, sometime within the next 6 months?
