Title: Potential crop of Appleseeders in Austin
Post by: thisismyboomstick on November 25, 2008, 01:04:31 AM
Several members of the Campaign for Liberty meetup group here in Austin have expressed an interest in learning to shoot. Another member there and myself are trying to organize a get together at a local range. I've plugged Appleseed a couple of times in the online discussion and have one that is going with me to the AS on Dec 6&7. The problem we're running into is finding a suitable place to go shoot. It would be nice to not have to go to a range that is open to the public. It seems like it would be a better learning environment if we could do things at our own pace. This could be a really good opportunity to turn them on to the Appleseed program. Are there any Riflemen with property close to Austin that could help us out? ( like maybe in Davilla -hint -hint)  I think giving brand new shooters their first experience with shooting from an "Appleseed" perspective might make them very likely to want to pursue a coveted Rifleman patch.

Here is a link to the aforementioned discussion:

Eagle Peak (Leander address) has a classroom that they would probably let you use if they weren't running a CHL class that weekend.  They have constraints (no rapid fire, no FMJ on rifle range), but their facilities are top notch.  The classroom would give you a place to retreat to.

I take new shooters out all the time (for both pistol and rifle), and would be happy to help out, though I'd ultimately like to see all of your friends at an Appleseed.

You are welcome in Davilla, but Metalbot is an Appleseed instructor in Austin and if he can get you guys to a range there, that would be even better. Marc just attended the November Boot Camp and is a qualified instructor for Appleseed. PM him and get in touch so you guys can get a date and time set up. If you would like one of us to coome to a meeting and speak we can also do that.

Ya see, Scout ... there is more!

The CFL groups in Austin are all Liberty minded folks full of energy and looking for a place to put that energy to good use.

In Austin we have metalbot, voortrekker, Derrick, Big D, and several others who were either at Davilla 11-08 or at the weekend AS.  The SAXET show  in Austin this month generated a lot of interest.

So, we have enough instructors and students to hold an event in Austin.  Just need a place and that will happen sooner than later, I am convinced.

Our first get together will likely happen after the Dec AS. Ben Goodwin from the C4L group and I will be there so we'll plan on discussing our plans with you guys then. The info packet on marksmanship I was talking about in the C4L thread was Fred's guide. Would I be able to buy 12-15 of those and maybe some of the AQT targets to hand out at our meet up? I also like the idea of having a Rifleman come to our pre-shoot get together. (Maybe with some hard work there will be one or two Riflemen there anyways.)

I may have met some of you at the Saxet show. I was the guy in the red C4L shirt scouring the show for a gas cylinder lock for my M1.

I met you at Saxet.

I'd be happy to attend your pre-shoot get together.  I've got a couple of blue guns (plastic molded nonfunctional firearms) that you can use for talking about safety rules.  Advance notice is always helpful.

I have targets on order from Fred.  If they come in, you are welcome to a packet of them.  After the AS, you'll have your own scored AQT's to use as well...

Lone Star Gun Range would be a place to practice.  They have 12 100yrd rifle bays.  I don't know if you could run a full event, but you could definitly grab a few bays and practice on the targets in all positions.  I don't see why you couldn't run an AQT across a few bays.

I'm definitely interested in something for Austin.  I'm here in south Austin.  Just fyi, a friend and I started http://www.texasguntalk.com  We have a number of people in and around the Austin area, so I'll spread the word on our site and see if I can get some more interest in this.  Davilla isn't far away at all for me, though looking at the '09 schedule I didn't see any Davilla events listed at all and I'd rather not drive to El Paso or Midland if I have a choice.  ;)

I have sent in the dates and they will post them as soon as p[ossible. I will be presenting the program to the Austin Rifle Club February 18th, 2009.  If they give a good reception to it we can add it as an Austin location. There are several million Austin residents and even though Austin is filled with twirlys, I bet with enough promo there we could run an APpleseed every weekend the whole year long, over 50 APpleseeds just in Austin.

The rifle shooters in Austin have just been forced underground like in CA. by the PC crowd ;)

So get some more locations to host events and get them in and set up. If you need me to give a presentation to your range I will be glad to. I can show them I have no third arm or swastikas tattooed on my forehead and I could even dig up a Gratefull Dead Twirly dance if they needed it. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Below are the Davilla Texas dates and we will continue to add dates and locations this week.

January 10-11
February Boot Camp and Appleseed at end 22-March 1st
March 14-15
April 18-19
May 16-17
June 6-7
July 4-5
August 15-16
September 12-13
October 10-11
November Boot Camp and Appleseed 8-15
December 26-27
