Title: Instructor KD Day at Atterbury. Its hustle time.
Post by: SPQR on February 11, 2014, 03:19:30 PM
ALERT   Immediate response necessary

February 22-23rd Indiana is hosting an Instructor KD Day at Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center.  This is very last minute and is a makeup for last fall when the Sequester cancelled our event.  The ammunition for .223 caliber rifles is being provided by Wolf Performance Arms.  We have space for 30 shooters.  First come, first serve.

The last minute nature cannot be helped.  This was the only date that CAJMTC could give us that jived with Wolf's promotional needs.
We are keeping this simple.  Everybody gets come-ups and then we rock some AQTs.  It will probably be cold.  It will probably be wet.  It will probably move pretty quick.  That just means you will need to move quick in the cold and wet.  Everything is fine here.  Situation Normal.

Don't worry, camping will be allowed.  S2S will eat steak and fries.  Range Control will be called.  Hope to see you there.  If we don't have a full roster by the end of the week we are going to offer slots to Seeders in the area who are loyal and bring folks to shoots and promote us.

Unfortunate event conflict.  :(

Ah well, hopefully it will stay cold and wet that weekend.  ;)

I will be there.  It will be epic.  We will shoot up free ammo and look awesome all day.

It is a moral imperative.

I don't have this sweet mohawk for nothin.  -:)

Rayne, the purpose of this event is to get great pictures for Wolf. I do believe that means the mission dictates our more "photogenic" models should be up on the line shooting and folks like me should be in the pits. Basically, what it sounds like is we'll be raising the targets for you and Barbie to shoot while Josh snaps pics.  IT'S FOR THE MISSION!!!

Can't wait to see y'all there. And Bill, super glad to see you're making the journey south. Huzzah!

I'm working on a warm place for us to sleep right now. No guarantees yet but I usually don't have to twist my brother's arm very hard to get him to allow us to crash on his warm floor. This is also the perfect time for a little NSWAB activities in honor of Barbie's big sendoff. I hate seeing her go... but I love watching her leave.  :cool2:

DING!

Is that a bell ringing?

I won't be able to make this one as I'll be working all weekend (unless ya'll are still shooting at midnight Sunday, then I'll stop by).  But I hope everyone has a great time.

DO NOT FORGET to send in your rifle info!  There is a link on the EIP page to the form that needs to be sent in.  The form is also at the top of the Indiana forum page.  And we have to have that info a week ahead of time.  So even if it's iffy that you'll be able to come, send in the info anyways.

If you're worried about how fast this is coming up, well, hey, just keep telling yourself...free ammo!

Prefer more normal clothes and less camo/operator gear.  No hard rules here, just if you have the ability to grab a backpack or alice pack instead of a full chest rig with body armor - go with the former.

It does not matter too much, only shirts with bad words would be no go's.  I would prefer you all look like every day folk with rifles over looking like CMP competitors or wannabe militia folks.

On the other hand, I can always just leave you on the cutting room floor.  But given your svelt good looks, rugged chin and manly voice - I would hate to loose you.   O0

Techres

P.S.  In all seriousness, if all you have is camo, don't sweat it, just wear it.  We will make it work.

I'm sitting at school 1,200 miles away crying because I won't be able to go and will be the first CAJMTC event that I won't be there to witness.  This shoot is the definition of epic, and there  be some pictures to confirm it.
Ya'll had better have a truckload of fun for those of us who can't make it.

What time do festivities get going on Saturday? EDIT:  Read the @#$@#% directions...check in at 7:30 am sharp.

The reason I ask is the COO of the Household made it relatively clear that being gone for work on Feb 18-19 and then Feb 24-28, and then for Appleseed Feb 21-23 is...unacceptable.

I'm thinking of Saturday only and driving down Sat morning, coming back Sat night.

KD...it's just that important.

Two sets of clothes, techres? With the green screen, all I really need is my birthday suit. You can add the clothes later.Im thinkin boots, body armor, and not much else. We sure are gonna have a lot more ladies next year!

Maynard youre welcome to use my A2 whenever Im not using it. Im down to one now so I cant bring one for you but if we line up on opposite pit crews we'll be fine. I reckon someone on this thread has one you can borrow.

Epic is probably not a big enough word for what this weekend is shaping up to be. Somebody break out the dinosaur book and find us a big word. AJ, where are you with that classical education?

Hey, in all seriousness, can one of you come up with an official certificate we can present to them?

They have one from the Green Dragon Tavern. I was thinking something along the lines of "In appreciation for your unwavering devotion to Project Appleseed and the cause of Freedom in selflessly providing a warm place along Route 46 for tired volunteers to continue the work of saving this Nation of Riflemen." Something cheesy like that.

Anyone?

Serious, for sure. What you have there is cool but I was thinking more like a certificate type thing. Boring brown paper with fancy letters, etc. Although, they'd probably hang that there graphic you made above their bar.  O0

NSWAB is "Naval Surface Warfare Activity - Bloomington." There's a big German battleship that sails the North Atlantic (aka Nick's) and while doing our best to 7th Step the local coeds at the liberal arts college (hey, it's for the mission!) we work on sinking the Biz as well. Fire Team Charlie has a tough job, but we're dedicated to completing the mission.

Nathan and Pam Ridgley are their names if you want to throw that on there.

I just figured it'd be a good token of appreciation for them. We've stayed there quite a bit and never really given them anything back. A certificate and some toilet paper would do them right.

Questions:
1. Are we checking out the range Friday PM or Sat AM?
2. Are we certain we have an OIC and RSO with up to date cards?
3. Do you mind if I cut out at noon on Sat to update my card?
4. Where do Nathan and Pam like to eat?  I bet we could take up a collection and get them a gift card. $5 from each of us staying adds up fast.
5. Where are the shenanigans happening Friday night so I know where to join in...I mean find you. ;)

1. Open to flexibility.  OIC prefers Friday as it gives us a chance tp put up backers before Sat AM
2. I think Yes.  OIC is updated for certain.
3. No problem.  I was going to suggest several people do that.
4. They don't eat anywhere in my experience but the drink the bejesus out of that town.
5. ???

WOW, thanks for the gracious invite folks (I'm not an instructor).  I've moved heaven and earth to get schedules re-arranged but it is done!  I've registered and sent info in.  Of course, 3 days biscuit and kit was already ready to go so no prob. on the last minute notice.
This is the perfect storm, great shooters on the line, winter (outdoor activities are just better with bad weather), DK, ammo supplied and only a range fee!  Am I less of a Rifleman if I admit I cried a little when I got the invite?  :'(

The modern equivalent, yes I do.   I'd like to tell you it is because I'm so prepared but that would be a lie.  We've recently moved into a temp. place that is 1/10th the size of our previous place.  It was pack things together or never find them.  My car is being used as storage space so my camping gear is all stored in the trunk.

I've been working on a technique that basically allows the Mosin Nagant stock sling to be used as a USGI sling.  I'm planning on using my AR but I'm bringing my 91/30 sniper to use on either day one or two IF it doesn't interfere with things.  I understand the main point of this shoot is to get photo and video ops for Wolf so I'll gladly leave it in the car if that is best.

I also plan to camp, I'll bring a tent but if there is enough snow I'll just build an igloo.  Yes, I'm serious.  Used to do that all the time, it's warmer.

AB - No, I don't have anyone yet.  Barbie may be updated and available.  not sure.  I don't mind a Saturday set up as long as all hands arrive promptly and pull their weight.  I don't really want to camp Friday but will without complaint if that is best for anyone coming in from out of town.  Correct me if I am wrong but if the range is occupied OIC needs to be in attendance?  Does OIC need to be there only during hot times?  I don't really care.

As for places to be.  I realize that tearing a blue streak with slim is not appealing to everyone but i do think it would be awesome if we all ate together.  Above all of that is Barb's last time with us for the near future and I am going where she is going.  If some folks don't want to extend their activities late into the evening I would be more than happy to lead a charge back to Nate and Pam's house for showers and shut eye.  They know me and wouldn't be distraught in the least to come home and find a bunch of Appleseeders bedded down in their house, particularly if i occupied my customary spot at the end of the sectional with the beagle dog.  I might even suggest Euchre as a pleasing pre-bedtime activity.

I have tomorrow off so I can make some phone calls to nail some of these questions down.

I need to be updated also...

I am off all day Friday.  I was going to ride up with Slim Friday evening but wouldn't be arriving til after dinner time.  If ya'll want to set up on Friday I can drive and be there anytime.  (Setting up on Friday is a lot nicer than screwing with it on Saturday...)

Is it possible to get our RSO cards renewed early on Friday then check out the range and get it all set up?  If so, I am available to do this, and can go ahead and help start setting up the target backers.

Just let me know.

I don't have an RSO card and should probably get one.  If they offer the training on Friday I can get time off from work and attend.  Can also put in time to get things set up on Friday if that can be made to happen.

For Sat, the chance of rain has dropped to 20%.  Yay!

I'm guessing it's gonna be a mushy, muddy mess. I need to figure out my layers, too. I don't remember how to dress for mid-40s.  I'll await a report from the southerners before packing.

Also, looks like I'm coming in on the 1930 bus. Should I point my GPS towards Atterbury or B-town at that time?

According to my sources the range is snow covered at this time and the area is muddy.  Someone who looked outside could probably tell you the same.

Brian and Barb - If you guys are willing sending someone to the RSO class would probably be a good idea.  they will let you take the test without watching the video if you choose to.  I am going to contact S2S about the same thing.  The RSOs could stick around for deconfliction.

the more I think about it the more I think we may not need to check out the range Friday if we make an honest attempt to get there early and all hands show up.  We only need 15 backers prepped at the top end and would have several folks to do it.  I will leave it up to the consensus of the masses.

Amy, you might as well head to Bloomington.  We can find you a port of call and I am sure you would be more comfortable.

Sounds like a plan Stan.  I will plan on renewing my RSO card and will stick around for the deconfliction meeting.  I'm pretty sure I have Brian & Rob's #'s so if we need to coordinate meeting up that shouldn't be a problem.

If anyone around me or who is enroute to Atterbury needs a ride, let me know.  I've got room for 2 or 3 in my car. (cell- 812-290-4738)

Josh and I are meeting tomorrow to set up a shoot list.  This will serve as our real CoF.  That will set the general outline.

For those attending the after action photo shoot away from Atterbury, I have been asked to say a couple of words about what I need.

We will be doing pictures in a studio style that will highlight that a rifleman is something other than a guy in the mud shooting rifles (those pictures we will be doing at the shoot!).  Please bring one or two changes of clothes for photography that are not what you would wear to the range but do wear in the rest of your regular life.  Power suit, dress, whatever.  Something more interesting than yet another set of carharts in camo.  Colorful is great, but not necessary.  The only warning is to shy away from bright greens as we will be using a green screen and you may bleed in.

You do not need to look pretty, or strong, or anything in these pictures.  You just need to look you.  Well, the cleaned up you.  Oh, and if you are worried about skin condition, blemishes, and so on - don't - when I get done your skin will be better than you could ever imagine.  Oh, yeah.

This will not just be work, there will be fun, some drinks, and stories of all kinds.  It will be fun.  Those who wish can then follow Slim out for his next level shenannigans (http://youtu.be/jJVrH4A38gA).

For those that may be unfamiliar with Camp Atterbury (ahem....ME!!!) where is " the parking lot of Range Control at 0730 with smiles on and their paperwork filed out and range fee paid"?????

I see the "address" on the EIP listed as  2.5 miles West of US 31 on E 800 S (Old Hospital Road).

Is this where we meet?  Is Range Control at the entrance or obviously marked with signage?  If not, where is the location?  What paperwork needs to be filled out (is SPQR referring to the rifle data we previously submitted?)  Who takes the range fee?

If this was discussed, my apologies...didn't see it.

Thanks

When you go in the gate (and it's fairly easy to find from town) you just go straight south. You'll see a group of men not to be trifled with and some womenfolk who are easy on the eyes but hard on the heart. That'll be us.

Drive slow. MPs hand out tickets for even 1mph over the speed limit and you have to drive even slower around formations of troops. There will be dudes walking along the side of the road. And they're Army dudes so use extreme caution.

It takes all of one minute from the time you snake through the checkpoint till you get to Range Control. If you see the helicopter hangars and sparkly new fire station you went too far.

Money is typically collected at the end of day 2 when the OIC says, "Crap, I forgot to collect all the money. Ante up you cheap SOBs." There is no other paperwork for lowly shooters to fill out. Only the movers and shakers need to worry from this point forward.

CAJMTC liability forms will need filled out. And Appleseed forms for our non-instructor guests.

Range fee due up front. I've seen those Atterbury bills, and it's scary. Especially if you realize you didn't collect it all.

Do not forget your drivers license to show at the gate. You can't drive in without it. Though they may let you walk in if you talk a good game.  Not kidding...it's happened to one of ours.

I don't have a recent zero on the rifle I loaned Rayne last time we were there & won't be able to get it before Saturday.  I think she used a BSZ and didn't dial at all + shot Wolf ammo.  Rayne, if you see this and have come-ups for my 20" Colt using Wolf I'd be greatful.

Rifle(s) = check.  Always need spare guns because I like running ~1200 yards round trip to swap them out when breaking extractors.
Kit = check
Rain gear = lost after my last ski trip.  UGH!
New waterproof boots = check

I know it's extra gear but I want to try out a new Vortex spotter scope.  Everyone seemed to like using my old one @ Atterbury & spotters aren't too heavy.

If you want to lug it around, great.  But you will have to be man portable in the mud and it is gonna be a ton of mud we expect.

When I am doing pics I will have to move it out of the backdrop but that is easy to do.

Im gonna take the unders on mud. That field is pretty hard packed and grassy. There will be muddy spots but I expect the berms to be clean. Wet, but clean.

Anyone wanna bet some Wolf ammo?

You will fill the forms out upon arrival.  You are already on the gate list.  Hydrate.  Get some sleep. Bring me 9mm as an offering to the altar Hufficus Optimus Maximus.  I will them grant you fair weather and safe passage.

I'm still not sure how we're going to have time to get all this done. We're shooting, eating, photo sessioning it up, and then we're sinking the Biz?

There are not enough hours in the day. I mean, Fire Team Charlie is good, but not even Fire Team Charlie can be in more than one place (or four places, that is) at once. Physics aren't just good suggestions... they're laws!

Vehicle loaded and ready to hit the road at 0630.  Brief 8 hour stop at work, then I'll continue on. If there's anything I'm forgetting to pack, someone should tell me now. ;)

Would you like the big banner sign back, I borrowed last fall?

Anyone have an estimate on the finish time on Saturday?

If you want the banner out of your way, I'll take it. If you want to keep it for upcoming opportunities, that's ok, too.

Any issues with getting to the base (as far as flooded roads) locally? ... the interstate?

I know there is a flood warning for the area.

Getting ready to hit the road.

Great news! I have a new job.

Bad news. I have to work this weekend. Started orientation Thursday, suppose to train for a week, already hauling freight over the weekend.

I hope y'all have a great time. Try to take a pic or two if you get the chance.  ;)

I just realized that Sunday was .223 day!  Happy belated 223 day everyone.  Thanks Wolf for remembering and bringing holiday appropriate gifts.  (For those wondering what the heck I'm talking about the date was 2-23)
Had a GREAT time.  Thanks again everyone for such a great organization.  I owe Appleseed more than I've gained and I've gained a lot from them.  This weekend I went more in debt.  O0
