Functionally similar to a service rifle match, but not restricted to service rifle profile or irons.

I'm really hoping to get some Appleseed vets to come out and dominate.  Good opportunity to seventh step.

More info on the targets-

SR Military "Target, Rifle, Competition, Short Range"
X ring 3.00
10 ring 7.00
9 ring 13.00
8 ring 19.00
7 ring 25.00
6 ring 31.00
5 ring 37.00

SR-42 - Reduction of the SR-3 Target for use at 200 yards to simulate the 300 yard stage of the National Match Course.
X ring 1.90
10 ring 4.56
9 ring 8.56
8 ring 12.56
7 ring 16.56
6 ring 20.56
5 ring 25.56

MR-52 - Reduction of the MR-1 Target for use at 200 yards to simulate the 600 yard stage of the National Match Course.
X ring 1.79
10 ring 3.79
9 ring 5.79
8 ring 7.79
7 ring 11.79
6 ring 15.79
5 ring 19.79

I looked up some of the previous scores for the match that this one replaces (Billed as "Highpower").  I saw some pretty good scores- 180's and 190's for stage 4.  I got a little worried because that sounded like they were basically a bunch of 2MOA shooters.  Then I found out they were using the same SR target for all stages (and not even doing transitions).

I'm definitely getting some pushback and complaints from folks about a sighting in period and fear of transitions.  I secretly want to tell them that I will be glad to bring a coloring book, if needed.  Then again, I need shooters to show up.

Is my Course of Fire too hard?  It seems to me, the real shooters ought to be able to perform.  Probably not going to see the same kinds of scores as the other "match", though.

I think I'll be able to score pretty well AND get a good nap in. (I'm not much on coloring.)

Pushback for a sighting in period? It is a field rifle. It should already be sighted in.   :slap:  Did the redcoats give the colonials time for a sighting in period? Do deer in the field stand there and give the hunters a sighting in period?

As for the issue with transitions? Are they complaining about doing them? About doing them unloaded? Not even sure what to make of that. That is like going to an IDPA match and complaining about the use of doors, windows, and walls to create the various "scenarios". It is simply part of that style of match.

Duh!

Not this time.

Our first match went well, despite the cold and the ice-crusted snow. Shooting in these conditions revealed some equipment issues- cold, ice,  and snow really bring out the gremlins. Optics and magazines were the source of particular vexation for a couple.

As expected, the line was dominated by ARs (m4 profiles) with various optics. Also represented was an A2 DCM-type service rifle and an AK underfolder 7.62x39, both with iron sights.

I saw some great stages from some,  but consistency and fundamentals won he day. Mrs. Dawg took this match with a 364 (3x) and is happily rubbing it in everyone's face all over Facebook. As happy as I am for her,  I may have to shoot in the next match just to remind her that just because I didn't shoot this time doesn't mean I don't know how to shoot :D

Despite losing to a chick, everyone said they enjoyed it and would come back to compete in as many as their schedules allow.

Only picture I got from the match was my "butt spot" that I used for stage 2. I figured I'd use my prep time to not only build a solid Rifleman's Nest, but to build a comfortable seat and, probably more importantly, allow me to put my feet far enough down below me that I could settle in and breath.

Well worth the time!  O0

The April 13 Match was great, gorgeous weather and a wide variety of shooters, including a young buck who was younger than me, which is always great to see!  :)

I've never shot my new AR past 25 yards or at an Appleseed, so it felt awesome to be reasonably on target all day at 200 yards. Reloads were all good and zero malfunctions too. My short range practice, sling fiddling, cleaning, and dry fire have been validated.  ;)

Thanks for coming out Noah.  Glad you enjoyed it.  It was a beautiful day, but a little breezy.  The mud wasn't nearly as deep as last time, plus I didn't have to plow snow **)

Bob M. stepped up his game and came out way ahead with a 348 x1.  He actually scored an 84 x1 on stage 3, but I caught him monopod-ing.  Stage 4 went way down for him  ;).

May's match is the 18th. I can't be there since I'll be SB'ing at Nashville, IN so we'll need a few of you Appleseeders to come out and represent. Show folks how it's done!

This really is a good opportunity to test your skills (and equipment) at 200 yards by shooting what amounts to a 200 yard AQT. Get a little AQT practice and some KD action. Win-win!

Update on the Centerfire Field Matches.  With three matches completed, we have some standings to report.  Three of the top six scores came from February. Top six scores of all time: Melinda Adams 364x3 (Feb), Mike Abshire 358x1 (Feb), Bradley Settle 349x1 (March), Bob Martin 348x1 (April), Jay Kendell 338x1 (Feb), Brian Roos 329 (March).

Melinda has agreed to call the line on Sunday, May 18, so I finally get to shoot the match :---

My guess is I will humiliate all comers and add a new top score for the match.  Should be a piece of cake since I will be shooting a borrowed rifle with irons :cool2:

Of course everybody is welcome to come out and give it a go.

In the greatest upset in the entire history of marksmanship since April 19th, 1775, I outscored Ben at the match today, and made a very handy improvement over last month's score!  ^:)^

That Patriot's day Appleseed was a great chance to work on my weak points at last month's match and get some handy tips and reminders from SPQR. These field matches are a perfect opportunity to test skills and equipment, and are very easy on time, your wallet, and ammo supply. I love that I can still make it to church before heading off to an afternoon match.

After Ben payed for my ice cream on the way home, we had a friend and his little sister over to shoot, her for the very first time. The evening went awesome, and both of them got a firm grasp on all the basics of 3 position rifle marksmanship and sling use, as well as defensive pistol basics. They were both shooting decent groups at 25 yards in sitting and prone, with good NPOA and position. Definitely future Appleseeders.  :)

Great post, Noah.

I have learned that talking smack actually puts more pressure on the one talking than the one being talked at.  When you run your mouth you had better be ready to back it up. :-X

Well, I was barely able to cash the check that my mouth wrote.  Since Mrs. Dawg graciously consented to calling the line, I was able to deliver the goods when the firing commenced.  She was glad to see me win, but disappointed to see her high score fall in a heap :cool2:  In fact, the second place shooter scored a 368.  I busted out a 400.  Definitely not ready for the National Matches,  but still a decisive household argument settler.

Next match on June 8. :---

Just a friendly bump for this coming weekend's Field Match on the 8th. Word on the street is several of the past match champions will be there so nobody will have to forfeit. It's on like Donkey Kong!!!

Come on out and get some good 200yd hot weather dope on your favorite rifle. I'm gonna run the underfolder AK with iron sights again since it's always fun to work in the hot weather and guess how much to hold under for every 10rds fired. Huzzah! With that little piece of info, it should be easy for y'all to come out and stomp me.  Bring it!  O0

Well, we certainly didn't do any "dry" firing today! Rain and rain and more rain falling from the sky. It was like really being in the field. Huzzah!

And every time I shot the water hit my bullets and pushed them down. I shot lower and lower and lower after shooting really well in standing. I banged my head against the wall trying to figure out just what was going on. Is it the rain? Is it the cold water on my barrel? What the heck?

Two weeks ago at Crittenden I'd done the same thing. All my shots (all from prone) were lower than normal. It was 85+ degrees that day. Today was less than 70 and rainy. Lights up, sights up? Cold rain? No beard?

Then it hit me. Something I've diagnosed thousands of times on the line but totally disregarded as a shooter. My cheekweld was inconsistent. In standing I was farther back and in sitting and prone I was inching up toward the sights... pushing my POI down. When I got home I snapped a few quick pics of myself in all three positions. Sure enough, there's daylight between my nose and the dust cover in standing and in prone, about half my nose is gone.

Time to go make a kisser button and practice smooching.

Stuff like this is what makes OTA (Other Than Appleseed) shooting worth it. Well, this and hearing all the forfeit talk.  :pop:

Here is a video from Ray Brandes, (retired owner of Ray-Vin enterprises, and designer of High Power gear). At 5:24 on this video he will show the way to load 2 rounds that was taught to Navy Shooters in the 1960 and 70's (who were shooting M1 in and winning National competitions). This is the way that VAShooter taught me to load 2 rounds in an M1 and it removes the worry of the rounds popping out in the criss-cross while loading or handling. It is very simple.

The video also contains single load instruction, safety, how to avoid M1 thumb, etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Rmtrc4cy-8

One thing I do that Ray doesn't spend time on is ALWAYS use the knife hand to load the M1. Thumb on clip or rounds and ping and edge of hand serving as insurance that the bolt cannot close until I am ready.

Also, you may want to make up some dummy rounds for practice. One method is to drill holes in the brass and use spent primers, no powder and the bullets you plan to use. Another is to make the rounds with spent primers and then mark them with paint. A final way is to glue a shaved down eraser in the primer hole and use either of the above marking or drilling methods. If you practice this you will get good at it. And to be competitive with the M1, you must practice.

Post by: Del on August 10, 2014, 12:33:22 PM
Thanks guys, maybe I'm expecting too much. I can get it to load but its not as quick as inserting a full clip. And way more involved than a simple mag insert / bolt release. I'll practice some more. Thanks for the videos.

Edged me out by 9 points. A bee stung me on my trigger hand though....

Thanks for the laughs, enjoying day 2 of college right now.  :cool2:

Saw Ben last weekend at the USMMA, he is doing fantastic. He is first in his company of 50 in physical fitness and academics, and his company is the "honor company", highest ranked, of the 5 companies in his class of 250. He is happier than ever.

While I was there on the parents' weekend, I went with him to his History of Seapower class and took their quiz over colonial sea power history, and beat his score and aced the test.  :---

I am hoping to make it to the next match, and drag my room mate along too! He is an experienced AR shooter, I'll be handing him an AK and we'll see how he does. All I know is it'll be great fun once again!

The current leaderboard is dominated by Appleseed veterans.

I missed this update somehow.

Rayne, I did have the baby blues covered up, except that one time dirtdawg yelled at me (several times) "EYEPRO!" I was trying to cheat the parallax caused by my glasses and kept pushing them up on my tactical operator WOLF AMMUNITION hat. I truly believe if I would've had some brownies with peanut butter fluff I could've won this match easily. Especially since Mrs. Dirtdawg forfeit again.

Noah, I'm glad to read Ben is doing well and so are you. I look forward to seeing you again soon. I hope you can make it to the September match. That's the last one scheduled this year.

And yes, Appleseed Veterans are dominating the leader board. Is that just happenstance? I think not!

I'm already excited to bring my roommate and my Dad out to the match! That Sunday will be the first time I've touched my wifle (ask Ben) in over a month. I think I'm gonna have to rig up a dry fire rig for my dorm room... Here at my school, all manner of knives are welcome on campus and in your pocket, but I still can't have my rifles haha.  :sos:

Oh and Slim, just for you. I have a mohawk and beard now.  -:)

There once was a Master Instructor who was also a Distinguished shooter and former Navy Shooting Team member. (He may or may not have looked like Santa Claus.) He used to tell a story at all his events and I remember it to this day.

He tells of a young man in the military who was a competitive shooter stationed in the state of Georgia(? Sorry, been a while since I heard it and forget specifics) and would shoot and shoot and shoot. He was getting ready to represent our country in the Olympics. One day he got orders to go to Hawaii and it's not so easy to shoot on the islands plus he couldn't have his rifles with him. So that young man went into his room every night, turned off the light, and laid down in prone on the floor. He'd visualize shooting an entire match, making all the appropriate shifts, breath control, etc. Once his year was up it was time for the Olympics. He went there having not fired a real shot in a whole year.

He was able to shoot well enough to take 2nd!

....and then, the first place shooter was disqualified for a technical error and the young man's score was good enough to win the gold!

When VAShooter told us this story he got tears in his eyes. The dedication that young man showed to put in the time and effort to win gold was so impressive a story it inspired him to become a better shooter. And it showed the rest of us we didn't need to send lead downrange all the time to be winners. Dry fire works! Mental practice works!

Clicky pens work!

Don't do it for me... do it for those wild and crazy men our age (see what I did there? OUR age? HA!) who sported the free-est haircut the world has ever known.
Title: Final Match of 2014
Post by: dirtdawg on September 05, 2014, 10:21:26 AM
Shooters!

We have the last match of 2014 on the schedule for September 14.  If you are not otherwise engaged (Richmond, IN and Knob Creek, KY come to mind), why not come out to CCFSA and try out some 200 yard known distance with your centerfire rifle?

I will be calling the line and feeling fine after my 25 year high school reunion.  That means I won't be able to defend my high score on the leaderboard.  I just have to stand there and take it while you try to knock me off of my pedestal. :pop:

Your preparation period begins now! :---

Oh, BTW we are on the schedule for the second Sundays in 2015 beginning in February (excepting, of course, Mother's Day)

I'll be there rain or shine. I'm 7th Stepping the Whitetails Unlimited Deer Camp event the night before at Great Wolf Lodge so I'll be in the neighborhood. Might as well stop by and shoot a 401.

401 will knock my score, but will it win the match?

Title: Final Match AND a new high score!
Post by: dirtdawg on September 14, 2014, 08:40:22 PM
I have to admit, with all the smack talk and the lame excuses, I was begging to doubt the effectiveness of a Mohawk as a shooting aid. Well, today it all turned around as slim emerged as the clear victor, crushing my high score that stood unchallenged for months. Whoever views this rebel as an easy matter is sadly mistaken, for slim knows very well what he is about.

Slim took the match with an incredible 426, and how could he not, with that mohawk, AR, and this pose?

Beautiful day here in good old Ohio, had a great day with my dad, college room mate, and the friendly folk of Appleseed.

Slim may have beaten my 382 handily, but I beat Ben's high score of 381 by a mile!!  ::)   Felt great today even though I haven't been able to shoot for a month, but yesterday I dry fired the whole match. Payed off!! I set personal bests in every single stage and I do believe I now hold the Stage 2 record  ;D

Thanks for all  the awesome Sunday afternoons this year, guys!

Today was fun. This whole weekend was fun. I'm honored to be out on the line with you fine Americans and I look forward to the days when Mrs. dirtdawg can shoot with her ear plugs in, Ben comes back to shoot with Noah (because the brothers challenge each other way more than I can) Del doesn't have football games to watch over, and dirtdawg himself is able to shoot with us.

I think we did Isaac Davis proud!

The greatest thing about these matches and our leader board is Appleseed dominates! There's no better way to sell the program out on the range than putting some 55gr WPA to good use and showing folks how the USGI sling will tighten up your groups. When they see what we can do and how easy we make it look they say, "I want to do that too." Field shooting sure is fun!

See you guys next year. Don't forget to dry fire!

Don't worry Slim, the dry firing and late-night match visualizing is compulsive at this point!  :pop:

Ben demanded (like I wouldn't anyway? Riflecraft is our thing!) that I e-mail him pics of all my targets and discuss all my scores and every stage of the match, he wanted to know all about how my Dad and Dan did as well, how Slim was doing, how many people showed up, how many had expressed interest in Appleseed, the whole 9 yards. Poor guy is missing his spot on the line and instructing, we both love teaching, be it sunday school or IMC, and hanging out with shooters new and experienced. A guy I traded knives with in California last week is headed to his first Appleseed next month, it's hard not to 7th step whenever someone mentions shooting! When someone looks you in the eye and tells you life is hard or uncertain, you give them the Gospel. If they tell you shooting is hard and uncertain, you sent them to Appleseed   :) All the people of Appleseed are the best.

If I can get a bunch of medical stuff cleared up by the end of Christmas break like I'm hoping to, I should have a lot of free weekends over the next year. You guys think there is a spot for another tri state orange hat? All I need is an excuse to head out for a weekend and clear rifles, teach, talk history, and enjoy the smell of Merica and smiling shooters.

Huzzah! Very nice blog. I'll share that on my facebook page for the whole world to see.

Think you'll be able to join us at Crittenden, KY over turkey day? We're having a regular Appleseed on Fri/Sat and then an "informal" KD/Tac Ops day Sunday. Come one or all three days. It would be really cool to see you, and everyone else, and to smoke you with that beat up AK.  &)

I'm gonna do everything I can to get both of us out there! Ben and I had a great day on the 50 and 100 yard range on 2 Saturdays ago.

Checked some schedule stuff with the family. My Mom is having a scrapbook party on Friday so my Mom had planned on her boys being gone shooting then anyway! Ben goes back the evening of the 29, I know there's literally nothing he'd rather be doing than anything to do with Project Appleseed. So he might be there two days, I'm going to try to make it to all 3!

Gotta finally get one of those shiny Rifleman's patches! Huzzah!

There's nothing I'd like more than to go as a shooter with my brother, and no better way to keep my skills sharp even though I can't shoot much or keep my rifle here- my AK anyway, we have Garands.

I go to sleep every night by visualizing the Six Steps, but some live fire would be nice too  :---

I think I'll sign up as a shooter and bring my hat along just in case. Slim, how many instructors are signed on for the event?

Edit- figured out the new instructor site. Looks like some great folks that I'd love to see again are signed on!
