Title: Upcoming CA Gun Shows we should attend

Hey Bob,
I can work setup on the 11th of Oct, but it's the oldest Granddaughters B-day, & there is -NO- kitchen pass out of that one....Sunday is open all day tho' ;D.....The Costa Mesa/Del Mar ones are good possibilities as well, let me know what is needed....we could probably have Layla & Alex help as well....depends on his union classes for some Saturdays, & what her school schedule looks like....
Keep us posted!

Count me in. Costa Mesa is closest to me, though I am not opposed to traveling.  ;D

Let me know what is needed and I will let you know if it is doable.

Go, prune-pickers!  And I can say that, because I used to be one.  Still miss it, except for the politics.

But please, when you firm up a date, PM me so I can put it on the schedule.  I need the date(s), city, name of show, and the forum name of the primary contact person.  Thanks!

Post by: V on October 05, 2008, 03:53:18 PM
So to confirm, Cal 7.62 and I are there for both days.

Savage Shooter you are welcome either day to boost our presence and I know I probably can't keep you away from an AS event!

Guys 'n'  Gals, even if we have a show "covered" its always good to have more people around the tent generating buzz and interest. So even if you can't commit to the whole day as an exhibitor and you're just coming out for a few hours to checkout the gun show stop by our tent and help out for an hour or so.

For exhibitors the show opens 7.30 saturday,   8.00am sunday and closes around  5.00 both days. For attendees its a 9 til 5 event both days.

Cheers

Who can help with the Costa Mesa Crossroads of the West Gun Show on Nov 22-23? It's time to step up again folks. Don't let the same people take all the glory for helping in the fight for Liberty! If you haven't manned one of these gun shows yet, take this opportunity to help out.....you may actually enjoy yourself! ;D If you are available, post here or send Laylopro or Bob 210 a PM.

Just a quick note....it appears that Crossroads has changed the date for the Costa Mesa show from the 22-23 of Nov to the 29th & 30th....

This could cause some serious scheduling changes.....let's all keep in the loop for this.

Bob,

I'm driving 5 hours to do the Sacramento show on 3/4, I'm doing the Ventura show on the 10/11, and then I'm driving 5 hours to do the Sac Valley Shoot on the 17/18.

So if someone could take the Ventura show on the 10/11 that would give me a week off in January...

Anyone want to do the Ontario show on 3/4?

Anyone want to do the Costa Mesa on 24/25?

If we don't do the leg work to recruit people at these shows we won't get to stand around listening to the sound of liberty at the ranges...

Cheers

V,

I've apprenticed at only one show (under the exceedingly capable SavageShootr & Johnny Appleseed) but if that is sufficient, I volunteer for Ventura show on 10 & 11 January.

Anyone want to join me (I'll let you be the boss of me, I'll do any tasks you're unwilling to do, and I don't mind solo-ing for long periods if you want to spend most of your time enjoying the show)?

Post by: V on December 18, 2008, 01:17:47 PM
Thank you WebDancer, you put our Rifleman to shame with your can do persistence, I look forward to not  only doing the show with you but helping you to your Rifleman patch at any upcoming AS.

Folks,

The way we do Gun Shows in California is to arrange to attend one just before and local to an upcoming shoot so that we can promote that shoot in particular as well as Appleseed in general. So I think its a good idea if IITs, Instructors and ShootBosses for a shoot try to attend their gunshow and not assume that there is a mythical gunshow crew who will magically take care of it for them.

Bob has asked me to take over running the gunshows for him which I am glad to do. Some of you have started calling me "Little Bob" well I hate to tell you but I think I'm more of a "Little Fred" so you'll be getting less of this  @) and more of this  &) this  !@#) and this  @&)

Sacramento

I have the OK for the McMann's Cal Expo Gun show in Sacramento on the 3rd/4th Jan so as Shootboss for the for the 17th/18th shoot I will be manning a table at that show. If someone could assist me it would give me the chance to visit the range during the show. I can carpool someone up there. PM me.

There will also be a McMann Gun Show, same place March 7/8 so we should also plan to man that for the Apr 19th shoot in sacramento. Bob, this isn't on your list above.

Piru

Any instructors from the Piru Jan 17/18, Feb 21/22 shoots shoots should consider attending this Ventura Jan 10/11 gun show to promote their shoots. PM me.

There are also McMann shows in Ventura on Feb 28/Mar 1, June 6/7, Sep 12/13 and Nov 7/8. If you are shootbossing or instructing at SoCal/Piru shoots around these times you should plan on seeding at these shows. I think we have an almost automatic admission to the McMann shows, they let us promote AS we promote their gunshow material at our shoots. Quid pro Quo. So PM me when/if you are interested.

Post by: V on December 18, 2008, 01:28:36 PM
Folks,

The list of gun shows is always changing and Bob's list above is a sampling. If you find or hear of a gun show near and local to one of your shoots PM me if you would like me to contact and setup a free donated table at the show. I'm happy to be a central contact so that we don't have multiple people begging an organizer and p***ing them off.

Here are links to help you find a gunshow you might be interested in contacting me about organizing.

Again, I'll contact, beg, etc., but I need you to take the lead.

Alright folks,

We need you to step up to help at the Ventura Gun Show Jan 10-11. Are you gonna let V get all the credit for getting people to Appleseeds from Gun shows? If you are Shoot Bossing an upcoming Appleseed, you should look into working a gun show near your shoot as we have seen attendance increases due to gun shows.

Well I had a grand old weekend in Sacramento. I did the gunshow, got the hostapp for SacValley, checked out the range and met up with the host and scouted out the hotels. Stayed with my son at his UC Davis digs.

[attachment=1]

Doesn't look a great site in the picture but hey people gotta pee! And the snacks and coffee bar was nearby as well so they had to walk past me...

Handed out a lot of SacValley  flyers at the gunshow on Saturday and met quite a few very enthusiastic shooters - "Finally, your shooting up here!"
Mostly locals at the Cal Expo so only interested in the SacValley shoot. Didn't hand out many Fresno flyers. I'll be looking for volunteers among the 17/18 attendees to do followup gun shows in Sacramento - 900 miles in a weekend is too much just for a gun show even for me :)

Looking forward to doing the Ventura show this weekend along with Webdancer and Rick (someone's gotta help those Piru Shootbosses get their attendance up - they might get beaten by Florida ;) ) and then its back to Sacramento the week after for the shoot! Lets see if we can break all attendance records for it!

Cheers

I will be at the GunShow in Ventura on Sunday the 11th of January. I will probably not be able to open it up (a little early to come from Whittier) but I can certainly help tear it down when the show is over.

See you all there!!

So thanks to help from WebDancer and Rick and SS we handed out just under 200 flyers at this weekends Ventura gun show.

Folks, you gotta understand, when we seed a gun show you are not just looking at 200 flyers this week, only 6 shooters next week at the event (I'm betting it will be more) you are also establishing in peoples minds a brand, a brand that has staying power.

After 3 or 4 shows I'm now seeing the same faces and people but who brushed me off at the first shows but are now stopping to talk and get firmer on their intent to attend. So I handed out flyers with all of this years Piru dates on them so we might not have boosted Jan's attendence but maybe we've bumped Feb or Mar, or April etc.

People who attend gun shows are our "low hanging fruit" if we can't seed and tend and nurture them in order to fight the couches because you don't think its worth it what are you going to be willing to do to get the next wave of attendees...

I even handed out a few more Sacramento flyers and a bunch of Santa Barbara's.

The next show is Costa Mesa, anyone going to handle that one? And yes, I'm talking to you guys with all the hats and patches  ;)

Regarding fliers for the gunshow, links to the flies and suggested numbers to have on hand will suffice, I'll be happy print them out and get the copies made. If a new flier needs to be created point me in the direction of one I can copy and modify and I'll take it from there. Also I have two folding tables and chairs so I'm set there. The one thing that would be nice to have would be a banner and since I plan on doing this regularly I'd be happy to purchase that also if need be.

Cook for now, only because I didn't get the memo earlier.

For years I've been starving for what Appleseed has to offer, a constructive way to make a difference with my rifle in my hand. I can only guess the less active members are working two jobs to try and save their houses, or they have a higher tolerance for submission than I do.

V, I know you've seen "first hand" what can happen to the citizens' rights if the masses allow the government free reign. I'm all too aware of how many English speaking countries would have us ALL jailed for attending a peaceful, family event like Appleseed. How far is it from there to slavery?

My life before I see it happen to my family, my country!

Cook, Rifleman, IIT, or HMFIC, we're all on this boat together, and our families deserve to live free.

I have followed up with Code of the West gun shows and they have agreed to donate a table at the Turlock, Feb 7/8 and Stockton, Mar 14/15 gun shows. Their Vallejo shows are full. Their conditions are that only two passes will be issued - no sharing, everyone else buy a ticket - and you must remain behind the table to pass out literature - no soliciting in the aisles.

So Turlock, according to BaldDragn should be good for promoting Fresno, and Stockton will be ideal for the April Sacramento shoot.

Folks, always have fliers for all the shoots available cos you do meet long distance travelers at guns shows and people with friends and families elsewhere. By all means focus on the local, upcoming shoot but don't neglect to push the others as well.

Thanks again to BaldDragn for stepping forward with these locations. See their website (http://www.codeofthewestgunshows.com/) for other locations and let me know if you can man a table at them and I'll get you a table.

I've attached Bob 210's Appleseed Elevator speech which I use at the Gun shows.

Cheers

Title: BaldDragn reports in on Turlock show
Post by: V on February 07, 2009, 03:15:17 PM
I got this PM from BaldDragn on his set up for the Turlock show this weekend. He'll be pushing Fresno, Sacramento and all things central California.

Note well folks, BD is seventh stepping for Central California and supporting us for the April 18/19 Sacramento shoot big time and he hasn't shot Rifleman yet!!

"Peggy" is the owner of the Code of the West Gun (http://www.codeofthewestgunshows.com/gun_show_schedules.htm) shows who very kindly donated a table for us at this Turlock show and the upcoming Stockton show, which is the primer for April 18/19 Sacramento. The Vallejo show is packed out otherwise she would have let us in there as well. Once again I found Bob 210's sage advice to be true, "They can't say yes if you don't ask them." So far every gunshow owner we've asked for a donation of a table says yes when we tell them about the program.

And kudos to who ever came up with that banner (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=5557.msg52165#msg52165) :D

Great job BaldDragn and once again sincere thanks for stepping up and helping the program. Post some pics from the show when its over.

Cheers
Phil

I set up the table at the Turlock gun show this afternoon. Peggy was very nice and helpful

I made about a 500 copies of the assorted fliers so I have stacks of everything.

I was having trouble figuring how to display the banner so I took a look a couple other tables then fabbed this up from 1" PVC
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/4739/dscf2994rr0.jpg
After I attach that to the top of the table with a couple "C" clamps, it should get noticed at 12 and a half feet high.

I picked up the M1 Garand and set up a stand to display it.

I'll have the two 10/22 LTRs (one scoped with a hasty sling, one with tech sights and an arm sling) for people to handle

Thanks for your post (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=5514.msg52436#msg52436) on how to talk to people, I started using it on the other vendors while we were setting up.

I don't have a place to set up the targets behind me but I may be able to hang them under the sign. I hope they don't have a maximum height requirement.

I was very worried I wasn't going to pull this off with any grace at all, but it's came together very well today. We have a very nice vendor behind (and her lab pup) us who is selling of all things... stuffed olives.  I think we'll have a good time.

Awww Shucks ::) Thanks for the good words V

Day one was great! I had lots of fun talking to good people about something we all are passionate about. Love of country and heritage was the focus of the day AND hey look at this while we're at it, a way to make more and better Riflemen. I may be doing this all wrong but I'm sure as heck having a good time at it.

The biggest mistake of the day was when two of our own members stumbled upon us and identified themselves as Appleseeders, I didn't relinquish the table to them at once and go take a break with the wife and enjoy a bit of the show myself. Just a warning to any members in the future I won't make that mistake twice.

The worst response of the day was a wave off as they walked by, and the best times was when I was so swamped with interested people, wishing us well, all I could do was hand them fliers and say thanks for stopping in. I'm printing replacement fliers right now for the Fresno and Sacramento shows because I underestimated how many would go out.

Having Julie there was great. She made connections with so many kids, wives, and girlfriends, letting them know THEY were our passion, so much so we would let them shoot for free. 4H and Boy Scout instructors were very happy to see a program that would dovetail with their own message of personal responsibility. These may be groups we should develop relationships with for mutual benefit, I'd love some feedback on that.

Turlock wants their own Appleseed, and I promised them that if they would help me out we would make it happen. A few of the people I met seemed determined that they would be part making this happen, we'll see.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

I tried to get some pictures, something I'm usually good at, but boy did they turn out bad. I'll make sure I get some good shots up tomorrow.

I am apparently posting hampered. I posted my experience today at the Turlock gun show somewhere..... As Baldragn said, it was a resounding success! I found many kindred spirit females this afternoon, and I believe a confirmation from one to attend the April shoot at Sac Valley! Huzzah! There was much interest and tons of encouragement from fellow vendors and attenders.  And yes, if I could, I would have had a full range of children under the age of 5 who wanted to come. For now, I'll go for their parents.  @)

V, the banner was grand. I had a great time. Thanks for the priveledge.

Great weekend... Now poke me with a fork, I'm done.

Here are some pics of the setup. Next time a nice table cover will come in handy.

Here are the best parts of the display. The poor guys never had a chance, one look and they had to come see what was up, and all the ladies were happy to see a kindred spirit.

Ya... I don't always fight fair.

The eight foot table was just the right size.

I'm going to have to make some shorter legs, that sign was way to high for that spot.

Overall it was a great time. I got lots of leads on local spots where people want to have and Appleseed and even some very determined individuals that wanted a copy of everything I had so they become members and bring an Appleseed to their own home town. It's awesome to see the lights come on when they realize Appleseed can do.

Hey Jules and BaldDragn,

Great display. That banner can't be too high, it attracts people from the far edges of the show with it up there. It looks like you did an awesome job.

Thanks for all of your hard work up there.

Iagree with Savageshootr... the banner will be seen from the front door if you're in the back of the building.

Maybe another hanging over the front of the table?

Looks good either way... Great job!

Thanks guys!

Getting back to the Topic, we in No Cal have a month to change gears, I'll be visiting gun shops and ranges in the area around Turlock, strike while the steal it hot so to speak. Then we have Sacramento (at Expo) on March 7-8, followed closely by Stockton (Fairgrounds) March 14-15. I'm available to anchor these events on all those days, I hope some of our new IITs, riflemen or even cooks like me who enjoy gabbing with good folks will stop in and help out. With just Julie and I in Turlock there were times when we had 4 or 5 people we could have been talking to if we had a few more bodies there, some people take longer to talk to than others and I don't want to leave a bad taste in anybodies mouth because I was rude and broke off before they had a chance to tell their story. Even more than that, I'd love to have time to swap a few stories with other Appleseeders when the crowds thin out.

Looking a little farther out to the future, the Crossroads of the West has a San Francisco show at the world famous Cow Palace ;D on May 2-3. It may turn into a nice night out on the town for us. Julie has quite an affinity for the city. If V wants to contact Crossroads of the West (801-544-9125) that would be great and if he wants me to follow up there I'd be happy to do it.

Well heck, if I knew you were thinking on drafting me into the table for a minute when I said hi, I might have been a little more brief...  ;)

Redding is Californias largest city north of Sacramento.  This might be short notice, but there would be lots of potential appleseeders at this event.

If we can't get a table, folks can print out some fliers and hand them out at the show.

I'm glad you realize this.

Being built on the LES plan myself, I'm very aware of the human trait that people do NOT look above their own eye level. Midgets, er, small peop... er, "normal size" folk don't recognize me very often for the simple fact that they're staring straight into my chest [I'm guy, not some well-endowed female who might expect such misdirected attention] instead of looking "way up there" at my face, simply because I'm above their eye level. I could give you a whole list of empirically verifying examples; this is only one of them.

That banner is great for finding your table in the crowd, but does nothing to advertise it, I'm sorry to say: you'd be better off stringing the banner across the front of the table, and having some big US flags displayed way up there above the crowd.

Not criticizing, just making you aware of some advertising rules o' thumb, in the hopes of making Appleseed that much more successful!

The next Gunshow is Code of the West (http://www.codeofthewestgunshows.com/gun_show_schedules.htm) at Stockton March 14/15th.

Currently, BaldDragn is volunteering to step up for this as he has done for the Turlock and Cal Expo shows.

It would be really great if someone would be willing to step up and do the Stockton show in his stead as I'd like to get him down to Fresno that weekend, get a Rifleman patch and an Orange Hat on him so I can roll him through the IBC at Piru the week after and add him to the roster of volunteer IITs who can help me with the Sacramento April 18/19th shoot.

Sacramento April 18/19th is going to be another huge shooting event but this time, unlike January, there will be nine other simultaneous California shoots that weekend so the "SoCal" guys'n'gals are not available to instruct em masse at Sac as they were in January. So we need all of our SAC local IITs, and anyone else shooting close to  Rifleman who wants to step up and help, to get to Fresno Mar 14/15th and the Piru IBC (Instructor Boot Camp) Mar 21/22. We will be flying in instructors from out of state if necessary to cover each range at the Sac facility but they will need helpers to clear the line, etc.

So, no pressure BaldDragn  O0, and anyone want to step up for Stockton?

Cheers
Phil

Latest report from Stockton gun show!

SLOW

After a record turn out at Sacramento, Stockton seemed anemic in comparison. The hidden advantage was that it gave me the opportunity to get out of the booth and make some contacts among the local shooting community.

I couldn't resist an offer to run an advertisement in a local shooting newspaper based on the mini flier. As soon as it prints I'll post a copy of it.

I made contacts with the Minutemen group also, explaining to them that results of our work would inevitably lead to waking up more Americans and create a boon for their cause as well. Also how they could do themselves a favor by coming out and sharpening their own skills.

The motto to this story... If Mohamed won't come to the mountain...!

I was not going to waste time setting in a booth when I had a giant room full of venders and gun dealers that hadn't heard our whole story yet, or how our work would benefit them. Thank goodness for RifleWoman's good work 'cause I used up the rest of my stash of mini-fliers, 400 more are on the way.

All of this resulted in other irons in the proverbial fire that could turn into huge plusses for California Appleseed but I'll have to hold off until I get advice from our Master Instructors before proceeding.

Persevering!

The Gun Show at Costa Mesa CA, Crossroads of the West, Mar 28/29 is a go, table confirmed.

The Costa Mesa show probably can be best described by the image of a cow carcass dropped into the Amazon river during low water season with the water apparently boiling with piranha in a feeding frenzy.

Now replace the words carcass with ammo and you get the picture.  OK enough with overly graphic analogies, but the crowds around the ammo and component vendors were voluminous.

The line to get in on Saturday at 9:00 AM was ~ 150+ yards long.  Maybe longer, I couldn't see the end of it from outside our booth by exhibitor parking.

This turned out to be great for Appleseed too, as the down moments were just that - moments.  There was a steady stream of interested people all day long.  Webdancer and Rick are both naturals working the show standing in front of the tables roping people in.    I can't thank them enough taking point and allowing me the safety of standing behind the table.  I also want to mention how great it is having ladies at the show as many women and children were visibly more comfortable talking to Webdancer than to Rick or I.  (It might be her charming outgoing nature too   ;D

Note to self:  Bring lots of water, talking all day is thirsty business.

Bob 210 turned the exhibitors parking lot into the Appleseed Target Distribution Center West for CA Shoot Bosses picking up their supplies for April 18-19.

For those of you that were there on Sunday, how did it go?

Cheers

Mr Bill

+1 It was delightfully busy and we made lots of excellent connections, including several firearm instructors--including a marine instructor whose head almost exploded with excitement--who seemed very interested in bailing with us.

LOL. The 8 year-olds or soccer moms, perhaps. What our modest Mr. Bill isn't saying is that several times during the day we couldn't beat the women off of him--long after the closing bell, two young ladies kept plying him with questions and comments and only left, reluctantly, when the show officials made an announcement. BUT, they left with a shopping list for Appleseed ammo and supplies in hand, chatting excitedly about the upcoming shoot! Also, his impressive firearms knowledge resulted in many people lingering to hear the AS message when, drawn to his bait guns, they were engaged in gun chat and deftly steered AS-ward. O0  I enjoyed the chance to get to know you better, Mr. Bill; you're dedicated, easy to work with, and serious fun. Francis Marion and Son of the Republic joined us for a while to 7th step, when they came by for their targets.

Quote from: MrBill on March 30, 2009, 04:03:38 PMFor those of you that were there on Sunday, how did it go?
The morning started with the NRA Member Council folks dropping by during the setup period to offer us their booth as they were leaving. We had spoken with Dee, the wife, on Saturday (and SavageShootr had met them at NRA / CRPA dinners) and apparently, she liked what she heard.  ;) When they packed up on Sunday they came by and literally "sold" us on the booth's features and benefits (increased traffic, central location, etc.) and Dee would not take "no" for an answer! Booth Boss SavageShootr went to look at the NRA booth and reported that it was, indeed, made of win. Because of the east-west orientation, our double-sided sign would be visible from both of the main entrances and across the entire building. Dee and her husband then helped us move all our gear to our new location and offered us tablecloths and flyers before heading off to work the cause from another avenue.

Sunday was a bit slower because there were fewer people at the show (the ammo buyers know that if they don't get to the ammo sellers early Saturday, they probably won't get what they need). That said, it was plenty busy in Appleseedland. Rick was lassoing families right and left and was approached by a man who wanted shoot flyers for his friends. He said he had attended a shoot last year and all his friends noticed how much better he was shooting, so now they plan to attend. ;D

Laylopro and Hollywood Marine came to get their targets and then stayed for a while to share the message at the booth. SavageShootr had the enjoyment of teaching a Barrett descendant about the actions of his ancestor. He was moved and delighted as he read the information in the book he was shown. Speaking of SavageShootr, a big thank you to her and her granddaughter Elisha. They came out Saturday morning simply to set up the booth--before heading back home to their houseguests--and then came right back first thing Sunday to 7th step all day. A big thank you also to Rick, who drove out and 7th stepped all day, both days. I believe a good time was had by all.

It was indeed a great Gun Show to attend. The very able Rick and capable Webdancer did most of the talking. We didn't have much down time until later in the day when the traffic thinned out.

The NRA couple who helped us change tables to indoors are both signed up for Corona April 18-19. We all know him as Sam Adams on the forum. Thank you Mrs Sam Adams and Sam Adams for insisting we move inside and helping us do so. It was cold out there in the breezeway. Then there was the added benefit of being able to see the sign from both ends of the building. (We had back to back banners)

My granddaughter enjoyed walking the show talking up Appleseed to all of the other vendors in attendance.

A highlight was talking to the young man and his wife. When he asked if I had heard of Col. James Barrett, I had more of an answer for him than he could have imagined. He was pretty surprised that I knew more about the actions of the Barrett family than he did! Including the actions of Rebecca Barrett and Meliscent. He was pretty puffed up with pride when he left the booth, as was his wife. (As well they should have been!) He mentioned talking to his sister about coming to an Appleseed.

In the end we handed out a lot of flyers and generated a lot of interest in the program. Most of the people there are closest to Corona. We did hand out flyers for San Bernardino, Dulzura, Corona and Piru. We handed out almost an entire box of the second edition of the Appleseed Newspaper, giving mention to all of the other events in California that most important weekend.

Thank You to all of the helpers at the show. It is, as always, my honor to work with all of you.

True, true!! While I can only vouch personally for the Sunday noon bunch, WebDancer & Rick both were keeping the handouts going out, & the contacts drawn in......It's great to see SS get not only backup, but some seriously solid help! These folks all work -HARD- at delivering the AppleSeed message, and the underlying message of hope.....

While I stopped by to get my "target pack" (about 40 lbs worth, it felt like), I was conscripted into walking the show with Elisha, looking for pointy things to put on rifles....(actually, I was looking for the British "bay-or-net" to use @ lunch time as a "point maker"....)(Elisha was looking for something sweet to munch on for desert....and sharp things herself!) ;D She is probably more of a shameless promoter than even KoolAid, as much as that says!! O0 :))

Watching Rick, Dancer, & SS work the groups of folks walking by was inspiring.....the gals really know how to reach out to the other women, & kids!!
While I know that MrBill is going to probably need help @ Corona, we did talk to a few folks that will be hitting up the Lytle Creek range.....
Just trying to take some attendee pressure off him, is all...... ^-^ O0

I was happy to see the mental set of most of the folks on Sunday has improved over several gun shows in the past.....we had far fewer "posers", and a lot more folks that are -serious- about wanting to learn how to shoot better.....they are beginning to wake up to the things happening in the country, & they want to be ready.
I say we help them as much as possible.....

Other than that, this has been wonderfully covered! Thanks again to the team of Rick & WebDancer; SS & Elisha, and all the rest who put in their time to make this happen, so our events happen even better. You guys ROCK!! O0 <:) O0

The Reno Show is the weekend of April 17-19.  This show is heavily attended by refugees from California.  While it is too close to the Appleseed Sac date of April 18-19, it would be a good location to market both Nevada and California Appleseeds that are scheduled for later in the year.

Does Appleseed have a marketing team that can cover this show instead of being on the line April 18?

I would love to have a presents at the Reno Gun Show, I've been there several times and it is huge, you are correct in wanting Appleseed to be represented there. However with help from the EPT, a solid core of local Boots On The Ground, and the fine work done by the SoCal crew in January, we WILL sell out Sacramento (I'm putting money on that), that should translate into repeat Appleseeders in June IF we do our part in April. In my view that means we use all the resources at our disposal at the Appleseed. This, coming from a guy that loves to do gun shows.

Now if anybody in or near Reno wants to get involved in doing gun shows (maybe an attendee from Fallon last month?) I will fall all over myself to help them get set up. Believe me, gun shows are the easiest gig we've got.

It's our good fortune in NorCal that getting people to an Appleseed in not a problem, we have proof of that, manning the Appleseed is our problem. The SoCal Appleseeders put up with a LOOONG drive to bring Appleseed to us and they can't be expected to keep doing that. The sooner we can get our feet under us here in the Sacramento area, the faster we can bring instructors up to Redding.

Now for the good news. We may soon have Appleseeds to promote closer to your home, like, just west of you (that's a pretty drive). If that is the case, then you can be sure I will be at a gun show near you and on the line with you.

In addition to all of the helpers who were present at the Crossroads of the West Gun Show. I had a bit of help attracting the attention of some of the people at the show by an inanimate object. The Rifle rack that ASminuteman made for my display rifles was awesome. I left it there Saturday and MrBill put his rifles on it. I brought out my M1A and Aly's 10-22 and put them on display in the middle of the table on Saturday. It really did the job.

Thank You ASminuteman for making the rack. It is a beautiful addition to the table. The rifles sitting on it make a good display, a great display.

A second round of praise for ASminuteman and his display.  Perfect for displaying an M1a and an LTR with a few books behind 'em (Paul Revere's ride etc).

It put the rifles up front and center so there was no confusion what we are about.  No more questions if we area a Revolutionary War re-enactors group.

Well done!

Asminuteman,

I would be very appreciative if you could cut one out for me!  Thanks!  I can easily assemble and paint

Working on the Gun Show Fu.

BD, found that 1-1/4" PVC slips nicely over 3/4" galvanized.  Putting together a gun show rig borrowing your ideas, but with the uprights being 1-1/4 slipping over 18" galvanized screwed to flanges screwed to ~12" square boards to clamp to the table top.  At the Costa Mesa show we were in the breezy breezeway and we needed a stronger mount.

This 1-1/4" should also be strong enough to fly 3 flags on each side.  Thinking about possibly a sleeve with the 3 holders already attached

I plan on using this setup at the April 18-19 Corona event.  Will try to take pictures (probably too busy running around like a beheaded chicken  :)) )

Cheers

Don't know about Gun Show Fu but here's (http://www.terryism.com/photos/sixflags) my general purpose banner/flag flyer for gunshows, admin checkin, instruction/history. Latest part of my shootboss toolbag for toting around California. If I cut the two long 7' poles and use a straight join in each then the whole lot pulls apart to fit in a long holdall.

And I relented and drilled two more holes so in the last couple of pictures its really eight flags...

So, how we all doing, everyone set for 4/19... its going to be..... epic!

I am working on getting a table at the Roseville gun show for May 16th and 17th and I'm looking for people that can work with me. I'll be there from opening to closing both days.

So far Vallejo has been sold out so they are not interested in donating a table to Appleseed, but I understand they have expanded to 500 tables so things may have changed. The May 30th and 31st shows conflict with the Fresno Appleseed so unless we have people in the area that can take this on we may have to pass on that one, but it looks like we have some new dates added for Vallejo on July 11th and 12th, Sept. 12th and 13th, and October 17th and 18th (conflicts with Sacramento).

The Antioch gun show lands on October 31st and November 1st (conflicts with Fresno). We haven't been able to get into this one yet as it has been sold out.

The Gridley gun show conflicts with the new Lakeport Appleseed on August 1st and 2nd. If someone in the Gridley area knows they are not going to attend Lakeport this may be a good alternative.

Turlock gun show is on October 10th and 11th. This gun show is about half way between Sacramento and the Fresno-Lemoore shoots so it should get our attention. We had many interested shooters there at our first show. The Turlock people were very easy to talk to so this would be a good place for any new Appleseeders to cut their "gunshow" teeth.

Also if anybody knows of a gun show that I haven't covered please feel free to PM me with the place and date and I'll look into getting us a table and finding Boots On The Ground to cover it.

Also if anybody has a table at a gun show (from Bakersfield to Burney) or knows somebody that has a table and would like to share some space with Appleseed please PM me with the information and I'll put it to good use.

I can help coordinate with the central coast gun shows ( fresno / bakersfield / paso robles) areas.  BD and Jules just gone done training me in fresno.  We also made an impression with Fresno Firearms and Mary was generous enough to give us some space on her table for free.  We just need to give her a heads up.  She will also be traveling the above mentioned 3 locations because she processes all the FFLs.

Right now, i've only got a laptop with a monitor and will be working on placing a rifle stand with room for some books.  I'd love to see ASM's rig.  PICs man!!! let's see some PICs!!!  >:D.  I will also be sharing my slide show to whom ever would like it as soon as I can get it squared away.  This will happen before the Paso Robles gun show.  where should i post it?

We have a table at the Roseville gun show, I'll be setting up Saturday morning at 7:00 AM and I could use some help. This is a good low pressure way to practice the 7th step of Appleseed.
Not to mention that you get in free. What could be better than that?

Getting to the ammo table before everybody else!

Ukiah has a gun show July 11, perfect timing for the new Appleseed event scheduled for Lakeport on Aug 1.

I'll try to get a table there but someone else may have to man the show. I'm also looking at Vallejo gun show for that weekend.

I feel like I earned my keep today.

First thing upon arriving, I met my neighbor for the weekend. He was wearing one of Fred's "Rifleman" T-shirts, so I assumed I had a kindred spirit setting next to me. Imagine my surprise when he informed me how Appleseed was doomed to fail because Americans were a bunch of fat and lazy cowards. I explained the relationship between a mind and a parachute, his was obviously closed. That was compounded by the utter lack of space in the tiny area we shared. Several volleys were exchanged during the slack times of the day which were far to many.

The morning rush was good, lots of people to talk to. It's great to have people charge up just to ask when the next Appleseed was coming to town. By noon the attendance had dropped to little more than a dozen people in a room of 150 tables. That continued for the rest of the day. I passed the time talking to other vendors about Appleseed. Once I had run out of vendors all that was left is to reread the first and second strikes from Paul Revere's Ride between the occasional visit, I'm so glad I brought a couple copies.

Tomorrow's another day, another opportunity to bail.

Title: CA Shootbosses, find a gun show to promote your shoot
Post by: V on July 12, 2009, 09:54:01 PM

If you want to take the lead, as BaldDragn has for Central CA, and be the central contact person for a recurring gun show in your area please step up and let me know and I'll hand it over to you.

Here are links to help you find a gunshow you might be interested in contacting me about organizing.

http://www.gunshows-usa.com/california.htm and yes there are other states at this site.
http://www.crossroadsgunshows.com/gunsched.htm reachable from the above site.
http://www.mcmannsroadrunner.com
http://www.codeofthewestgunshows.com/

The ideal is to find a show a week or two before your shoot at which you can promote it. Check out if there are other AS events which might make it hard for you to find volunteers to help man the table that weekend. Alternatively, any show is a good event to promote any Appleseed, so if you have nothing doing why not?

Again, I'll contact, beg, etc., but I need you to take the lead. All you need to do a show is some banners, some flags, some flyers, and some rifles to attract attention and a target backer with some targets and handouts stapled up so you can explain things. They you just talk about Appleseed with folks.

I can help you with loaners of banners/flag sets other high cost items which you might not want to pay out for. Flyers people pay the duplication costs...

Cheers
V

Now that central and northern california is on its way to becoming "instructorized",  ::)  the upcoming Sept. gun shows listed here-

http://www.centralcoastgunshows.com/

would be a good place to promote the Lemoore and Bakersfield Appleseeds that follow.  :~
The bad thing about the Bakersfield show is that it's on Labor day weekend, and also the same weekend as the Castro Valley and Red Bluff AS's  :'(

Bob whats happening with the Sacramento and Piru IBC's that weekend. There's no one signed up for these on the Instructor schedule. I can do the Ventura show unless you want/need me at one of the IBC's.

If so I would prefer Piru as I'm doing Red Bluff in NoCal 5/6, show/piru 12/13, SB Piru 19/20 and possibly helping out in Arizona 26/27 - hey one a week again...  :D

OK folks, we missed the last couple of opportunities for SoCal gun shows due to the CA Leadership meeting and the Simultaneous IBC, but now is the time to make up for it and get the word out about the upcoming fall Appleseeds. The next shows are as follows:

Oct 3-4 Del Mar  (this show is crucial for promoting the Dulzura Appleseed Oct 31- Nov 1!)

Oct 24-25 Ontario (this show would cover the Glen Helen Nov 14-15 and Corona Dec 12-13 Appleseeds)

Nov 7-8 Ventura  (for all the Piru Appleseeds)

We need folks to step up. The Shoot Bosses for these shoots should look at these Gun Show's as one of the best ways to promote their events.

Who's is available?  Please post replies here.

Sat

Bob 210

Laylopro

Sun

NewMoe

We sure could use some more help folks. Even if it's for just a few hours, it would allow folks to go get lunch and a little relief.

November 21st & 22nd!  At the last one in September BaldDragn and I were the only ones to work it.  I'll be there, but I don't want BD to have to come out, since he's already bailing as fast as he can.  I want three volunteers--it doesn't have to be for both days or all day (though that'd be fantastic if you can).

I made contact with the organizer of the Paradise gun show (just north of Chico), got a warm reception on the telephone, but he explained that the show sold out (12 months ago!).

I talked my way into a card table for free when he understood that I had nothing to sell, but wanted copies of the material I would be handing out.

I sent him PDF versions of the Dec Red Bluff Appleseed flier and the SWAT reprint along with a nice email explaining what Appleseed is and that it is free for youth under 21, women, and active duty military.

Today I got an email response:  Show sold out, do not want to set a precidence for free information tables since others pay for them.  Do I want to be on the overflow list if there is a cancellation, cost $50 per table (not sure if that is per day or per weekend at this point).

So I got shot down for my first show promo opportunity.  :(

Hey, I always do Ventura.... :)

I did skip out this Sunday to go do the RBC instead... @)  but I'll be there in January.

Folks, please don't overdo the "get into the show for free" by just doing a couple of hours. Lori commented on how many people were in when I handed in the badges on Sunday so lets not abuse our hosts.

If you want to just hang around and help out for a couple of hours pay the admission, do the show, and stop by and help out.

I'll be there both days setting up the table, banners, flags.

Cheers

McMann Roadrunner just notified me of a gun show this upcoming weekend, Jan. 2 & 3!  They weren't supposed to come back until February.  I'll be making table arrangements on Monday, and I need VOLUNTEERS!

If you can get in the cold, muddy rain to correct dragging wood and advising breath control to a new shooter, taking a few hours to tell folks about Appleseed should be easy--no cold, no mud, and you can sip coffee!!  9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm Sunday.  You don't even have to stay all weekend--a few hours will make a huge difference to someone who will be there the entire time.  We're rolling out Sacramento shoots every month of 2010, and I need Riflemen to help me spread the word!!

PM me, or let Balddragn know.

Howdy folks. Just a thought on gun shows. It is very important to attend these shows to promote the upcoming Appleseed events. It is also important to attend these gun shows regularly, because it gives us a "brand name recognition". The more people see us at these gun shows, the more we seem like we are here to stay and not some fly by night organization. It seems as though we keep relying on the same few folks to represent Appleseed at the gun shows and they are doing this in  addition to running shoots, doing admin, etc. We have 75 instructors in CA. We really need people to step up and help out at these gun shows. The fact that we had to cancel attending the Cal Expo show, makes us look bad to the gun show promoters that are willing to give us tables for free. I'm asking the rest of you to step up this year and help out in promoting at gun shows. The next gun shows are at Ventura on Jan 9-10 and Costa Mesa Jan 30-31. It looks like we are covered at Ventura, but nobody has stepped up for the Costa Mesa show yet. So who can help? Please post here.

Bob, and all,
The contacts made at these shows are the ones that will fill the line at our shoots.....while most of the folks will only take a flier or two, there were three distinct times this last weekend @ Ontario I had someone walk up to the table, look at the fliers, collect -all- the information, and look at me and say: "I've been waiting for this to come to California!" While my normal response would be to say: "Doof, we've been here for almost 2 years now..." I just tell them we got here as quickly as we could, and that they really need to come participate..... ..:..

Costa Mesa has been, and will continue to be the main show in SoCal for participation at our events.....whatever you do, do -not- let this one go under-manned (Womaned)(Is that a word??) Who's up for the end of the month workout?? Like the man said, you won't be laying in the mud, and you -will- be able to have your coffee to sip on......I can show up for awhile at either day...personally, I prefer Sunday's anymore...the folks that show up after 12 are the ones I usually want to talk with...they will see the value from what we tell them.... O0 Not to say that the other times are "bad", just a  bit more "hectic"..... :))

Also, helping the CRPA in their membership drive is another good point of helping -do- something for Cali....

If not us, who? If not now, when?

Action beats dialog almost every time.....

Get off your butt, and -DO- something.....you really will feel better about things.....and sleep better at night as well...

Actually, McMann Roadrunner charges non-profits $20/table.

But I agree that it doesn't look good.  And if I could focus effort on any group within AS, it would be on Riflemen who have not gotten a Hat.  Nearly all who have a Hat are really busy as it is, and I don't want to guilt them into bailing more--that is the path to burnout.

Quote from: bob210The fact that we had to cancel attending the Cal Expo show, makes us look bad to the gun show promoters that are willing to give us tables for free.

I get into the McMann's free as I bring my own table and setup in the breezeways. They charge if they supply the table as they hire them. YMMV.

I'll commit to help out in Stockton, and it'd be really be helpful if someone could be there for the start of the show on Sunday, as I'd be getting there late.  Help on Saturday is good, too.    ~~:)   I've got a banner and poles so I can be there for the table setup.

There has to be a Seventh Stepper from the Stockton area who wants to help on this, right?   O0

OK folks, I just booked a table for the Costa Mesa Gun SHow Jan 30-31. We are gonna needs some more help. Please step up and help us to promote the upcoming events. If you haven't worked a table at a gun show for Appleseed before, this is a great opportunity to learn the elevator speech. Come on out, it really is a great time.

Looks like we have some coverage for the Costa Mesa Gun Show...

Saturday= Camljr (I will be there before 7:30 am)  rocket man, Bob 210
Sunday= Grandson of Liberty, Maybe SavageShootr, if she does not go to the Dulzura shoot.
Laylopro says he will float in either of the two days but as relief and doesn't know which day yet.

We could use any help anyone could give for a few hours, to relieve the full day folks.

Quote from SavageShootr:
I am unsure as to my work schedule for this weekend. Too many variables to go into here. If I am not working as of Friday evening, I will be in Dulzura. GoL might be with Mr22calgal and 22calgal. (I think)

You can park in exhibitor parking. Last time I was there, they charged 5.00 for that. As you walk from the parking lot to the main gate, there is a restroom off to the right. Just after that and before the main building is a driveway off to the right. Walk up that way and the entrance gate is off to the left.

After you go through that gate go to the center of the breezeway and go into the building on the right, take an immediate right and go toward the back of that building, on the right, and check in. They will give you a table assignment. They will give you the badges. Whoever is there Saturday can leave the badges under the table for the Sunday crew.

hey guys,

are you still planning on hitting the gun show in costa mesa this weekend? I can be there sunday. I sent bob a pm about it but haven't heard back yet. Assuming we're still on, but I just wanted to find out all the details about how i get in, when to get in, how to set up, will stuff be out already? what do I do with it when I'm done? anyone else gonna be there, etc?

Any info and help is appreciated.

A great big thank you to all that showed up to help at the Costa Mesa Gun show this past weekend. The next gun show at which we would like to make an appearance is the Del Mar show on Feb 13-14. We have never been to this show before, but we have just signed up the Escondido Fish & Game Association for an Appleseed on Mar 20-21 and this would be the perfect show to promote this shoot and any upcoming Dulzura events. I will not book a table until I have some volunteers to run the table. Who can step up and get promotions started in San Diego county?

Stockton Show, Day 1

The show opened like a flood, and the place filled quickly.  The crowd was a bit different than what I'm used to seeing at Cal Expo--fewer families.  Perhaps it being Valentine's weekend?  After 12:30 though the pace was slow.  I talked to quite a few folks who had not heard of Appleseed.  A lot of people know the Sacramento Valley range, but there were questions about shoots in Stockton (none yet).  My table was next to the NRA, but I was surprised to that CRPA wasn't attending.

A lot of the vendors were raving about the Turlock show last weekend.  Did we have a presence there?

More later,

Stockton Show, Day 2

Sunday was THE day!  Who would have thought that Stockton families would spend Valentines Day at a gun show?  But I talked to a lot of parents and children, all of whom were very excited about Appleseed.  I have to work on my History presentation; a lot of the kids were enthralled by the battle at Concord, with their parents nodding as they remembered.  I fully expect to see some of those young faces at a shoot very soon.  A lot of men are going to try to bring their wives--the story of how BaldDragn bribed persuaded Jules to attend had light bulbs over their heads.   **)

Code of the West provided a table at no cost, and they were easy to deal with.  I plan to attend their May show in Roseville.

I'd say about half of those I spoke to were familiar with The Sac Valley Shooting Center, or knew where it was.  There were a fair number from the Central Valley, with a few coming over from closer to the Central Coast.  I think it'd be a good idea to have a listing of upcoming shows for the region, just to give people an idea of other venues.  I wouldn't print up a bunch of fliers, but I plan to have a list of Valley and Coast shoots for me to reference, especially given all the shoots we have in April.

I went to tthe Santa Barbara Antique knife and collectible type gun show last weekend. Jessica and I handed out flyers. There were more vendor and staff people than there were general public.

It was very small. In about a couple of hours, we handed out, maybe 30 flyers and talked to people. Most of the people that were there seemed to be in the 70-80 age group. It is not a very good show. Bunch of junk. One of the vendors asked what we were handing out, I gave him a flyer. They were selling books and home made jewelry. He told me they were against guns so they would not be interested. LOL.  %)

We engaged a few people successfully I feel, so it was not a total loss. They really need to get a "REAL" show going on up here.

Next one, I think we will stand out front, or get a table, and do it that way.

It was valentines day also, so that may have had something to do with why there were so few people.

There is the Big Reno Gun Show April 16-18.  I can man a table on Friday the 16th.  Perhaps someone local not traveling to do an Appleseed on the weekend can man the booth over the weekend.  I also posted this on the Nevada board, so maybe someone will be able to help with booth duty.

Could you use your charm to get a free table for us?

I have an email and a voicemail in with the organizer to try and get donation of table/space (ie we provide the table in a walkway/registration area, whatever) I'll let you know what comes back. If he agrees I will need the names of volunteers for each day.

JS is volunteering for Fri will there be anyone for the weekend. I know we can't pick this date but generally a gun-show on an AS weekend is a bad idea, it sucks attendees away from us and we can't get enough volunteers for both  a show and an AS. What we do in Cali is find the gun show dates then arrange AS a week or two after them in the area then use them to promote the event. I know that doesn't apply in this case just a note for general.

Title: Gun Show Report
Post by: Antibubba on March 08, 2010, 01:43:25 AM
I think this weekend's show at Cal Expo was one of the best ever.

Matt and Jessi came out for a few hours Saturday, during what turned out to be the slowest part of the whole show.    ::)   We were well situated for foot traffic--just inside the entrance and directly across from the Miwall Ammo booth.  This meant I had people coming up until closing time on Saturday and until 3:00 on Sunday.  I talked to many interested couples, and a lot of families.  Told about the battle of Concord, many of those children were more excited by the History Lesson than the shooting!   ^:)^  There is hope for the future!!!  I expect to see a lot of families in the next few months.

What blew me away was the number of old farts Dangerous Old Men who were interested in Appleseed.  Usually these are the guys who already know everything there is to know, but the word is spreading about us, and they have grandchildren or other family they want to go shooting with them.

And the new tri-fold is great!!

We have a comp'ed table in the Foyer of the Sierra Resort, just need volunteers to man it.

Yep. And if I remember correctly, we were able to get it all loaded without having to cut anything down to shorter lengths, so there shouldn't be any extra assembly required the next time around. I know she and Mr22CalGal had some stuff to deliver to LayloPro, so it's possible he might have the set-up now.

Heh! Not only possible, but true...including flags & banners......
All mostly in a road case now, to make transporting a bit easier.....

The poles are a bit of an issue, however, the Jeep is not real length friendly on most stuff, so we will probably go with couplers on the majority of the stuff....doesn't add any time to it all.....

So, does this mean you want me to be in the Sat AM "start up" crew?

This is a few months off, but it never hurts to start early.

Code of the West has scheduled a show June 12-13 in Gridley, which is halfway between Sacramento and Red Bluff.  I'd be happy to represent Sac, but it would be a great opportunity for Red Bluff to promote as well.

Great--I'll get it set up.

Now, a question for the group.  There are no Sac-area gun shows between now and April 17-18.  However there is an anti-tax Tea Party Rally at the State Capitol on April 15 (naturally).  This would seem to be a great place to find potential Riflemen.  Has anyone done a Tea Party, or provide feedback for any other outdoor event?

BaldDragn, James E, his lovely daughter, and I attended one last year in Sac. I found that there were a huge mass of people, and each group came with their own agenda. It was rather a mess, and Fox had a field day with it. We did the best we could with what we had, and I went and looked for folks that seemed to have the same reason for being there as we did...... I can say of all the hundreds of fliers and hundreds of people we talked to, we did get one man who came to Sac Valley to an Appleseed for a Saturday only. I had talked to him and his friend at the Capital that day.

I would like to get someone up to Reno for the gun show in April.

ANYONE not scheduled for an Appleseed on April 17-18 PLEASE get signed up to help for that show. Nevada is the next area we want to 'Island hop', and V has everything reserved and set up for us. We just need YOU.

Thanks,

Jules

Thanks Antibubba!  A good back up plan if no one local can help out over the weekend.  However, if you skipped the Sacto AS and came up here, it would just enable me to go down to Sacramento for the AS.  So, as much as I want to be in Sacto over the weekend, I'm not sure if us trading spots makes sense in the bigger picture.  If all else fails, I can cover all 3 days.  Fortunately Desertrat144 is coming part of the day Friday, so I will have bathroom breaks and help.  My hope is that someone not able to go to AS will be able to cover at least Sunday, so I can do at least 1 day in Sacto.   I really appreciate you willing to jump in and sacrifice!

BTW, I'm working on a slideshow that I am hoping to run on a laptop at the gunshow.  I'm not sure if we will have power available.  What I would really like is a big flatscreen, but that definitely needs external power or a pre-charged UPS. Hmmm.....

Harrold,
Power is available at the tables for an $80 fee... I couldn't get everything waived for us. How seriously do you want power?

Don't pay for it!  If you can get it for free, great, but don't pay $80.  I expect to have a new laptop, so the battery on it should last several hours.  I might try to cobble something together with a jumppack and inverter or with a UPS.  I don't have a flat screen in the USA, so the laptop will be it unless I borrow a computer monitor from someone.

Besides, I think we might be in the lobby rather than in the gunshow hall?  If so, there might be free power there.

Can we use hand puppets?  It'd certainly bring in the kids!   :))

I have the Appleseed slideshow on my laptop, which I'd bring anyway.  We can copy it to yours.

If you can  get one or more bailers willing to work with me on both days I'll commit to both Saturday and Sunday.  But you might want to be there one of the days anyway--Big Reno is far too busy to have only one person at the table.  You'd be surprised how busy one table can be, and that's at our watered-down California shows!  Also, I have a banner and frame-- would I need to bring signage?

The only other stipulation is that I have some place to stay.  I'm unemployed and I simply can't afford to fill the tank and hotel up for 1 or 2 days.

QuoteI really appreciate you willing to jump in and sacrifice!

The shoots are merely the apple.  Getting citizens off the couch is the real bailing.   ;)

Regarding the sign and stand, please review the event rules that were linked by V. Our normal California banner is probably too large unless you are fortunate enough to get a wall booth where the sign size/height is not an issue.

I was looking at the Big Reno Show.com website rules for the show and this might be a work around for the banner.........
10. Exhibitors must provide BOTH top and front covers for each of their tables. Front table covers must be of sufficient length to ensure one cannot see under the table from the front.
Regarding the front cover- AN APPLESEED BANNER IS THE PERFECT SIZE FOR THIS (I believe.) I think they're 3' x 6'

Antibubba, I'd say bring the banner and frame if convenient.  Maybe we will get lucky.  Also, we might be able to use the banner to cover the front or top of the table, as per the rules .  If you have tablecloths or even white bed sheets, we can use those as well for the required tabletop/tablefront covering.

If I am there over the weekend, I will be staying at a hotel, so you could crash with me.

JetSet / AntiBubba - I have supplies for you guys for the Reno gun show.  I have Red Coats / Tri Folds / Etc.  I'll be heading to the Sac shoot this weekend and can drop off supplies there or UPS it.  AntiBubba, if you are heading up to Reno, I'll leave them with BD and Jules.  You guys tell me where you want them and I'll get them there.

Yes, the banner will cover the front nicely.  We can get a disposable tablecloth for a few bucks.

From the Vendor Rules:
Quote12. Signs must be no larger than 30" L x 12" H and must not extend beyond 18" above the table. No overhead signs or banners are permitted. Wall table displays are not subject to these restrictions.

If we are outside the hall, we might be allowed to put up the sign, and use an outlet.  Maybe.   V or JetSet, can you call and check?

OK folks, we have another gun show coming up at the end of March! The Costa Mesa Crossroads of the West Gun Show will be the weekend of March 27-28. This will be our last chance to promote the big April 19th events! We really need some help with manning a table at this show. Who will answer the muster drum?

We still need folks to help out at this upcoming gun show. Who can help?

Just secured a table for the Paso Robles gun show May 15-16, right next to the FFL table.  I will be bringing several rifles for display, hand outs, trifolds, monitor, computer for slide show, etc.  If there is anyone in the local area that can help for that weekend it would be greatly appreciated.  Just need help for coverage, everything else will be taken care of.

One thing that I would need for this gun show are flyers for your upcoming shoots, Bakersfield / SLO / Santa Barbara / Lemoore.

V is sending me AQTs, Redcoats, and 200-300 tri-folds.

SWAT articles would be good, if you have them.  I don't know if I'll need more of what V is sending; I've never worked at a gun show, so I don't know how much traffic to expect.  Anyway, I'll need the supplies because I will be there on Friday, before anyone else is able to come.  The best thing to do is to UPS them to me.

Yikes! There are two California ranges at the bottom of this (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=11778.msg103415#msg103415) list! We should be at the top in the sold out section, not down there in the ZERO pre-regs!

OK, here are the figures from here (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=10584.msg87679#msg87679)

Castro Valley            62%              22                35
Corona                     52%              26                 50
Santa Barbara         33%                8                  24
Red Bluff                  27%                8                 29
Eureka                     20%               6                   30
Piru                           16%               8                  50
Sacramento              12%              10                 80
Ridgecrest                 10%              4                  40
San Luis Obispo          0                  0                  50
Lemoore                      0                 0                  35

Which overall means we are going to be using 10 ranges to wake up only 92 shooters out of our max capacity of 433 ie California is only 21% full.

Ten ranges, 3 instructors per, 30 instructors to wake up 92 shooters, thats 3 each. We might as well go down the pub and buy a round of free drinks. It would be cheaper, and we'd have more people listening to us >:(

If you haven't received tri-folds to paper the gun shops, brake shops, gun shows, gun clubs, schools, whatever,  post here and someone close to you will get you some or I'll mail you some.

Come on folks, lets get things rolling here...

For the rest of the country, the good news we have 1435 currently pre-reg'd. The Bad News we have room for 4487 so the country is only 32% full.... and California is providing 6% of the current pre-regs and 9% of the capacity.

We need folks to help us get the word out. Please post here or send me a pm.

Ok folks, I was able to talk to an FFL in town and she does all the transfers for the Fresno, Paso Robles, Bakersfield shows.  I will be helping her in her booth during the May 15-16 Gunshow in Paso Robles.  She is generously providing a small portion of her table to Appleseed to do promotions.  If there is anyone available at any point during this weekend to help it is appreciated.

The following are things that I will be bringing:

Appleseed Banner
Trifolds w/ holders
Swat Mags
10/22, single shot rifle, ar 15 & rifle stand
Fresno / Lemoore / Mariposa fliers
small computer / monitor / power strips and appleseed slide show

What I need:

fliers for your local shoots
volunteers

Please contact me via PM for planning.
Title: Big Reno Gun Show-Report
Post by: Antibubba on April 19, 2010, 05:27:40 PM
This was first posted in the "Nevada" board.

Whew--what a weekend!

I arrived in Reno early Saturday morning.  Apparently Friday had been a bust, since almost nobody stopped at the table.  They wanted to get inside the show as quickly as possible, scoop up their goodies and go.  This is the usual pattern when the doors open on a 2 day show.  The entry line on Saturday morning was almost out the door, and if you've ever been to the Grand Sierra you know how long a line that is!  As usual, no one wanted to stop on the way in.  But by 11:00, as people left with their treasure hauls, we talked to more and more people.  I was very glad to have two of us at the table at all times, because they arrived in waves.  Arashi arrived in the early afternoon, and Jet Set left.  Arashi brought his LTR and a gorgeous FN-49 which drew in lots of admirers.  Never underestimate the power of blued metal and stained wood!  The rest of the day ticked along nicely.

The line to get in on Sunday was considerably smaller, and as usual the first ones in are focused on finds.  But again by 11:00 we were seeing a steady stream of interested men, women, and children.  I was pleased by the number of potential "Dangerous Old Men" who were wanting to attend; usually they are the ones who already Know Everything.  They will be very welcome additions to the lines.

I was surprised by how many people from Northern Nevada had not heard about Appleseed; it reinforced the need we have to get established there with regular shoots.  But the people who had heard of us were most enthusiastic, and thrilled to learn of the 3-day shoot in May at a private range in Gardnerville.  Even better, we talked to Nevadans and Californians who are members at ranges or own private land who want to host Appleseed shoots!

I was not surprised by the number of visitors who came from California--I'd guess at least half.  A lot of you in other states don't realize what it's like to walk into a gun show and see guns on nearly every table!  I saw three foot high stacks of high capacity magazines (standard mags for the rest of the country) on tables, Class 3 arms, every size, shape, and configuration, spread over an acre and a half of floor space.  I saw no cutesy stuffed animals, heard no stun guns, and smelled no beef jerky.  It was glorious!  And it broke my heart.  I'd walk by items on a table and think, "Felony...felony...law enforcement only...five year sentence..."   It's hard to understand the freedoms you've lost until you visit someplace that has them.  We have a long slog back, California, and we need a lot more bailers.

Jet Set had manned the table on Friday and was with me for the first half of Saturday.  We discussed the light traffic and considered whether it would be worthwhile to pay for an inside table.  After examining the weekend traffic at our table in the corridor I'd have to say that not only do we not need it, but we wouldn't want it.  The aisles were clogged with throngs of people, and we would have had to shout to get our message across.  Outside, people could relax a little, set down their treasures, and listen to the pitch.  The next Big Reno show is in September, and we definitely want to be there.

Antibubba, thanks for the After Action Report on the gunshow. These are useful for the next set of people to host a show there.

Folks, now is the time to plan for the next one, don't leave it till the last minute.

Thanks to the volunteers who manned a gun show on the biggest weekend of the Appleseed year and who did a great job of getting the message out. As AB says, we have a lot of ground to recover before we can even begin to start talking about winning.

Cheers

Jet Set had manned the table on Friday and was with me for the first half of Saturday.   The next Big Reno show is in September, and we definitely want to be there.

AntiBubba,

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts here at Sac Valley. We SO desperately needed Jet Set here as an Instructor this weekend. I am encouraged to hear that more folks learned about us who had not yet known who we are. Good work you guys! We couldn't do it without you!

Also thanks to Arashi, who was there all 3 days (and Desertrat144) who was there on Friday and picked up stuff on Thursday evening.  They manned the table so that I could go to Sacto on Sunday.

BTW, despite our poor location, lots of people stopped by due to the article in Backwoods Home magazine. I had no idea so many people read it.

Work enough gun shows and the worst will eventually happen.  Yes, I got stuck next to the stun gun vendor.   !@#)

Otherwise, it was a really good show--I talked to a lot of men, women, and children about AS.  Lots of trifolds and information was passed out.  Every child was told an abbreviated history, and that we'd teach them to hit that one inch black square.

It was quite busy for such a small show*.  As always, it is difficult to judge how successful it was until these people show up for a shoot.  Another addition to the sign up sheet, after email, should be a "How did you hear about Appleseed?".

It was so small the NRA didn't have a table and no one was selling beef jerky!

The next Ventura McManns show is June 5/6. I will be in England then so is anyone willing to man this show for me. You can borrow my table, flags, banners, trifolds, swats, etc.

Appleseed has been at every Ventura show since we started there so I'd hate to miss one. Anyone?

Yea, thanks Dano, Liberty Minded,

Anyone else help out? I've done gun shows single handed a few times, its tough to get natural breaks, food, drink and if one or two people stop by you are swamped...

Even if you can't "man" the show for a day, if you are going to the gun show anyway drop by and help out for a few hours.

Anyone else?

Doing a show singlehanded also means you can't have a rifle on the table, and LTRs get a lot of people to stop.

cam, dano, liberty,

I'm leaving on Friday and won't be back to the 20th. If you folks work out what you want to do about table chairs, who has a car for the table or do you want to get the folding one from Piru, (mine is a 6 foot non-folder), the banner display and flags are easy.

I can drop them round Cam or Dano's place. Sort out who's doing what on transporting stuff there Sat and back on Sun.

I will get the stuff from V, since we live close by. I have a 6 ft. folder table I can use...

I think I can meet anyone at the usual table location outside Bldg 2+3 at the west end. If you go through the gate, and tell the attendant you are working a booth, go to the vendor entrance before 8, you can enter that way no charge. If you wait until much after that, you will be charged, i think...

I will be there both days at 7:30 am. setting up...  I will have MauserSanta there helping out Saturday, too...

OK folks, we have a couple of gun shows coming up in SoCal.

Del Mar July 17-18  (Promote upcoming Escondido Appleseed)
Ontario July 31-Aug 1 (Promote upcoming Azusa, Corona, Glen Helen Appleseeds)
Costa Mesa Aug 28-29 (Promote upcoming Azusa, Corona, Glen Helen Appleseeds)

Who is available to man a table?
Title: Re: Upcoming CA Gun Shows we should attend

I will be SB in Cedar City UT on 31/1 so if Ontario gun show people could push the Azusa shoot on August 7/8, at Burro Canyon Shooting Park (www.burrocanyon.com), that would be great.

I went to the range today (confirmed again the dates and price). They are giving us two private ranges East One and Two at half price, hence the $10 range fee.

We can shoot 100 yard with about 30 shooters on East One and can put anywhere upto 100 shooters at 25 yards on East Two.

This is our first shoot at this range hence they assume the best and give us both ranges. Quote "if it turns out crappy then next time we'll have to argue over which range you get". The next shoot we have booked here is Oct 23/24.

So put out the word and help us make this a great inaugural shoot for our new hosts. I've dropped off swats/dillons/tri-folds today for them to push.

Cheers
Phil

For those of you going to Costa Mesa. Chelene Nightengale will have a table at the Crossroads of the West Gunshow. IMO the only GOOD candidate running for California Governor. Chelene is the ONLY candidate who strongly supports our 2nd Amendment rights. Invite her to an Appleseed while you're there. I know Desert Dog has had positive dealings with her.

Inviting her to a Seed is cool. We cannot as a 501 3 (c)  endorse anyone. Nor should it appear that AS is endorsing anyone. That gives folks a mixed message. We have one of our own running for Mayor in West Sac. We will support him and work his campaign, but cannot in any way connect it to Appleseed.

Is the bear Catholic?

I covered it as usual... some friendly people stopped by so I could eat, drink and do what bears do in the woods...

Quite a few previous Appleseeders who were very enthusiastic on the upcoming shoots. Lots of excitement about Newhall, Saugus and Sunland.

By the way, should we do more prominence to the host range name rather than the neutral "town" location? Several people were like, "hmmm, ok I'll think about it" when I explained were the "towns" were but when I dropped the range names, Oak Tree, Angeles Shooting and Place To Shoot they were like, "Oh right, yeah I've shot there", much more excitement.

Just a thought. It would have been nice to have had company  :(

Cheers

Crossroads of the West is doing another show in Del Mar on Dec 18th, 19th and February 12th, 13th.

We need to get this on the calendar.  We had a good turnout this last weekend and I know that a consistent effort with constant visibility builds our credibility and familiarity with the public.  Put me down as a volunteer for both weekends, both days.  I can do at least 1/2 day shift both days.  I plan on showing up no matter what and y'all will have to kick me out if you don't want me there :-)

Thanks Hambone, but we made the executive decision to take a pass on the November Big Reno, and take another look at it in March. GGlovesguns is in Nev. and has already made contact with the event owner for a table. We were surprised by the lack of buyers that made the Big Reno a few months back that BD,ES,NC22G, GG, GB, and I worked. Thanks for your willingness, and we will see about getting a table from Lou again in the Spring.

Because of work I can't go to CV this weekend but I can do one day of the Costa Mesa Gun show.

I know it was just discussed on the conference call but are there any reference materials for the show?  Suggestions?

Is there a standard kit for the show?  Historical Map, fliers, flags etc?

Who is on point for Costa Mesa?

Turns out I was on point!

Bob210 provided all the promotionals and I made due with hats, books and shooting jackets.  After Bob showed me the ropes it was, "Dance Monkey Dance!"...so no different than a regular shoot.

Good:
It was a great time.  Plenty of Appleseed alums helped encourage interested visitors.  Nothing like testimonials from regular people to give us momentum.  Lots of IIT, RH and SB swinging by which was great.  Nice to meet Appleseed family outside of a shoot.  I got to meet Melody's dad and brother (Melody of the infamous Burro Canyon underwater shoot).

Just guessing I would say that interest came from about:
40% new individuals
40% new families (very interesting)
20% previous shooters

All in all a great time,
-Peter

At the last gun-show in Ventura I've decided to save money on dated material like flyers for individual shoots, Instead I go to the webpage schedule (the map) filter on California and just print that web page. It has the next 2-3 months of CA shoots for people to look over. I hand out that plus the tri-folds, swats, dillons.

Exactly...people were asking about shoots for which I had no information.  I'll remember that for next time.

The Glen Helen flier was nice because it showed a Ladyseed.  Explaining that there are dedicated women who shoot a 210 AND spend the 120 hours doing the "IIT apprenticeship" to become Instructors and SBs really impressed people.  Lots of families and women seemed convinced just by that.

The family angle was good.  At least 7 families picked up info, listened to the spiel, asked questions and seemed genuinely interested.

Ontario Gun Show Feb 5-6

Alrighty Folks, another great weekend and another Gun Show. So who is going to be in Ontario this weekend? Also who normally attends Ontario shows?

Thanks Mr. Pete for attending last weekends show but even more so for the AAR. If your interested, send him a PM. I'm sure he will share the details along with some of the other topics that were discussed while he was there. I will also start compiling these AARs and looking at trends so that we can look at the information and have a more effective influence.

Again, the more help the better, especially in the way of materials and banners and the like. Thanks everyone and let me know ASAP if you plan on attending the Ontario 5-6 Feb show so I can fill you into the schedule. Also, if you are in the area and have Gun show materials, that would be good info as well.

Hey All.....
I am usually the one in the barrel @ Ontario....it draws the "almost usual crowd", with the exception of the reloaders.....they do not allow Primers/powder to be sold there (incendiary devices, now doncha know?), so that part of the crowd usually just does Del Mar, or more likely, Costa Mesa....

If anyone is interested, the usual gun show "box" is here @ my place in La Verne.....give me a shout if you want to pick it up & drop it off, it will fit into a Jeep Cherokee sized vehicle.....909-226-9333.....
It is stocked with trifolds, Dillons, and SWAT's, but no new (2011) fliers.....we -NEED- those!!

Give a shout...

Great Laylo, thanks! So we have the place, we have the materials.....

Do we really not have anyone to attend? Will we go unrepresented and miss the opportunity to awaken our fellow brothers and sisters? Gun shows are prime places to plant the seed and to let everyone know "what we are about" Folks I'm sure some of us are attending!! Who will be the one to step forward and take the 7th step? PM me or Laylo.

I wish I could go to this one also!

After being thrown on the fire and dancing last week I can say from experience gun shows are fun!

Try to remember when you first heard about Appleseed.  For me it was at the 2008 Steel Challenge in Piru.  JohnnyAppleseed (Richard) and his wife (Cindy) talked to me and made such a positive impression that Appleseed made it to my long term to-do list.  It took me 2 years to have the opportunity and to make the time...and my fate was sealed.

I love the idea that in this age of the Internet and cellphones what mattered most...what changed the course of my life...was somebody like Richard who inspired me.

Inspire someone this weekend!

ps.  I can deliver the Costa Mesa materials that Bob provided to Ontario.  Let me know!
