Title: Port Sulphur, LA - May 25, 2013
Post by: LawDog on May 26, 2013, 09:29:10 AM
The theme of this event was a GK Chesterton quote: "If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly."  Chesterton mean that some things are so important that you should do them even if you can't do so perfectly.  To me, that pretty well sums up what it means to be an American citizen.  And a Shoot Boss.  And a Rifleman.

Twenty other Americans agreed with me at our second event at the Sheriff's Range (thank you, Sheriff Greco) in Port Sulphur, LA.  Eighteen shooters and two IITs came out to try their best to live up to the standards set by Isaac Davis and others on April 19, 1775.  Kris, a member of the National Guard, proved himself worthy of a Rifleman patch, though he was heard to say that he wanted to work harder to improve.  Norm sent 209 points worth of rounds downrange on his very first AQT.  The determination he expressed tells me that 210 barrier will be shattered next time.  Others showed steady improvement.  No one was perfect, but we all felt - particularly on this Memorial Day weekend - that what we were doing was worth doing nevertheless.

My thanks go to the parents who brought out their children and grandchildren.  I also thank my two very capable IITs - isleno1963 and geeck.  Any time, any where.  And thanks go to our newest IIT - sbent04.  I look forward to working with you.  (Now let's get the Missus fitted for an Orange Hat as well!)

Thanks for a great day.  My daughter and niece enjoyed it as well.  I'm looking forward to another one.  Anything worth doing is worth doing badly... so i may have earned my badge, but to me it was just barely.  I need more practice cause i really want to smoke that AQT next time!
Also glad to see others that share my passion for guns and history and dont look at me like I'm "that guy" when I try to learn them something. I guess you squids aren't that bad after all ;D
we need pics!!!

I received these comments from "Bear", a shooter at this event.  Her kind words are my Appleseed "paycheck"!

I wanted to wait until the second time around to get a better idea of the program. My assessment: I love it!! Challenging!  To whomever you send this to, let me say I went to the first Appleseed in Slidell knowing nothing. Well, I did know where the trigger was and where the bullet comes out, but other than that -  nothing. By the end of the weekend, I was actually grouping ON THE TARGET! Ha! Fantastic! I attribute that to the excellent instruction by both Dan and Kenny. This organization need to hold on to these two guys. They definitely know what they are doing and how to get it across. As a Supervising Teacher, they would definitely pass with flying colors.  I also loved the history lessons. Definitely not what you hear in the classroom or textbooks. They put you there. The second Appleseed was a one day at Port Sulfur. Again, learned more and advanced my score. Just by a few points, but in my case that is progress. In an educational environment that is what you look for, progress, improvement.  They are both fantastic instructors and I was very please at how in tune they are concerning safety. Not even a muscle twitch got past them.  You can be very proud of how they represent Appleseed.  Looking forward to the next one.
