Title: Apr. 27th Rose Hulman Event
Post by: slim on March 10, 2013, 05:41:25 PM
Hello Hoosiers,

We're having a special 1-day event for some of the young men of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology at Cloverdale on Apr. 27th. This will be the 2nd event and we're taking the lessons we learned last year and applying them this year - specifically MORE PIZZA!!!  ^:)^

We're also looking for a couple loaner rifle kits. If you have a Liberty Training Rifle (as you very well should!), a set of eyes/ears, a shooting mat, folding chair, etc., please send a PM to "Brown" here on the forum and coordinate with him. We only need about a dozen and I believe he has about 1/2 of that covered already. We won't need too much .22LR but if you have some to send with your rifle or would like to donate, we'll gladly accept it for the event.

The big deal this year will be donated center fire ammo. Some of these future engineers have never seen or handled a firearm of any type. To remedy that, we're going to have a "show and tell" or (to keep it AS-friendly) an "intro to KD rifles." Huzzah!  :--- We'll need donations of .223/5.56, 7.62x39, .308/7.62x51, .30-06, etc. If you have some you'd like to donate, please pass it on to your Shoot Boss at your next AS event. Can you imagine if every Hoosier at every Appleseed event in the next few weeks donated just 20rds of ammo?  :---

We'll need a few volunteers to staff the event  :sos: as well. If you have a fun rifle that you'd like to familiarize the future of America with, bring it! This is a pretty quick and easy event. These young men come sorted out and there's not a whole lot of "work" involved. - And there's pizza!

Hope to see all of you on Apr. 27th. Thanks for your assistance and donations. See ya!  -:)

I can supply a total of 4 LTR rifle kits .
please PM me with what you can loan and we can make arrangements to meet up somewhere and I can transport all the materials to the event.

Please make sure to label everything just as we did last year. that worked out really well.

I can supply steel targets, a pair of .22 rifles (plinkster and 15-22), and if someone is bringing an AK/SKS I can likely supply some surplus Yugo ammo (brass but slightly corrosive).

I have a bag of ~500 Federal .22lr ammo that may, or may not be very good.  It got wet at a seed some time ago and needs cleaned up.  Let me see if I can clean it up and do a sample test.

They are engineering students!  I have a tube fed 22 semi that I can send too!  That should be cool for some kid.

Will there be an AK or AR there?  They have to have exposure to those platforms.  Slim?

I'll kick in my Ruger LTR and Marlin 795.  I'll throw the AR and Garand in the car for show-and-tell-and-shoot.  I'll know in a week if I can for sure attend this event, and if so I can help Brown collect loaner items if needed.

i can loan two marlin 795s, one with techsights, one with scope, I will be working that weekend, so the AR and the garand will be staying home. if ammo is needed, let me know and i will see what i can come up with as we get closer.

I gave slim ~500 rounds of Federal .22lr and 160 rounds of 7.62x39 for the AK's.  I will get rifles to someone going that way before the event.

3 10/22s (2 scopes, 1 tech-sights) and 1 Marlin 60.  .22lr ammo count will have to wait until after April 21 when I know what's left.  And potentially not much.  :(

What centerfires do you want?  I can drop them off that morning and pick them up at the end.  I need to be in Indy that day, anyway.  Or send them with Rimshot if he can make it.  Should have a small amount of ammo for each.  And plenty of ammo for the Mosin.

Enfield
Mosin
AR-10
bolt-action .308
AR-15
M1

Two 10-22s, one scoped.
One 795 setup just like the marlin LTR.
Savage 62, scoped.
M1
SMLE

I'll likely instruct as well, not certain yet if I can be there.

Need shotgun ammo? If so, how many rounds? I bought some cases of those Federal Breast Cancer Pink 12 ga. shells last year. Be happy to donate and figure out how to get them down there. I'm sure someone at the Fred meeting in 2 weeks can get them south a ways.

I can't commit to attending but would like to.

For shotguns I'm thinking maybe we should have a single shot shotgun, a pump shotgun, and a semiauto. Is there an area we can set up to bust up a few birds? Intro to clays, maybe? Perhaps even a slug/buckshot/birdshot demo for the whole crew?

Pistols, probably about the same. A mix of different styles and caliber where the guys can see first-hand how each works, the difference in size and accuracy, and how to operate each.

The more I think about it, the more we should probably set up a demo for the entire group (where Instructors explain and fire each) and then break up into stations they'll rotate through to shoot a sampling of each style firearm.

This is a "special event."

Based on feedback from last year's event - and at the request of the student liaison - we're adding a broader familiarization to various firearms. He's expressed the need for these "Call of Duty" experts to be familiarized with the real world applications of various firearms and would like for these students to be exposed to more than just .22LRs.

We're also going very heavy on IMC/KD since they're engineering students. And of course, the highlight of the day will be the Three Strikes, told with references to Star Wars.  :cool2:

I appreciate any suggestions you (or anyone else) may have.

If you want to go that route, I can check with the Club about getting trained to use the Trap House.  Will involve extra $

A Brown Bess demo would be awesome! I have one from the group buy to show around but it's in non-firing condition.

An 870-style shotgun w/knoxx stock would be cool. Send it!

Lets not go that far. (Although it does sound pretty cool!)

I was thinking more like someone could use a hand thrower if guys wanted to take a shot at hitting a bird. The main point of this would be to illustrate the difference between the "tiny" bullet of a .22LR (or any rifle for that matter) and the gigantic shot pattern of a shotgun. - And to make the connection of why it's easier to use a fouler than it is a rifle for things like birds on the wing.

Is there a safe place to do shotguns? My thoughts are we'll do the Appleseed line on the far right, pistols in the middle,  the "KD" line on the 100 and then shotguns in the grass on the left. Is there enough room and would that be safe? Last year we were able to keep everyone in line and cease fire the entire line to change targets, etc.

Will send the shotty and some 12 ga. birdshot with it.  I will send extra 20 ga ammo that I have no use for if someone would send a 20g to shoot it.

Warning is obvious here: if you have this many different things happening at once, you need to be ever more careful on control and clear in action.

But I am sure that is obvious.

*** UPDATE ***

We're going to have a classroom-heavy morning (fun with numbers!) that transitions into some squares. After lunch we'll do some field shooting in all three positions and then assault weapons familiarization "introduction to modern KD rifles" and wrap up NLT 4:00.

Since nobody seems to know the official policy on pistols (and there's been lots of debate on that topic recently) we're scrapping that entirely. Same with shotguns. No tomahawks (or slashers, Ratchett!) basketballs, boomerangs, etc.

.22LRs and KD rifles only.

Weatherman is calling for additional rain Tues & Wed, then again Friday & Saturday  So range will be squishy with some mud.

How do you want the lines set up?  Are you going to want target boards @ the 100  & how many or just steel?  I have two 25M Stage 1 and one 4" round AR500 steel.  I have two D targets that can go to the 100

I can set up 25 spaces on the 25M .....  could shift a few of them to the 100 if wanted.   :)

Also remember we can't put anything down range until 1000 hrs   &)

How many shooters?

What's our rifle count?

How do we get them all to Cloverdale???

Lots of offers of rifles, but without a drop-off point/point man for the job, the rifles don't get there.  I could maybe pick up a couple tomorrow evening, but I don't have a lot of space to work with since I also have to fit my little sis and two dogs with crates and overnight bags in the car.  So, my official count that I'm 100% sure to drop off Saturday AM:

5 10/22s (one only has a zip-tied sling, though)
1 Marlin 60
1 Federal Bulk Pack

I'll label all of "my" gear with pink garage sale type stickers and write down gear on an index card, too.  (Some of "my" gear is SY's that just so happens to always end up in my garage.   >:D)  I'd recommend everyone do something similar.  I'll also put mags in the cases with the rifles to try and make it even more simple.  I'll be picking up my gear at the end of the day.

I also don't have to be at the speedway until 9:30, so I can stick around for a bit and help with check-in.  My friendly puppies can help with meet and greet.  ;)  Do you need anything else?

Yes to eyes and ears.  Slim just told me it'd be nice if each LTR kit had eyes, ears, mats, chairs, etc.

Chairs will not fit in my vehicle with everything else.  Mats are questionable, but I'll see what I can do.  I've only got two mats, anyway.  I have a few sets of eyes (4-5?), but not many.  I'll send what I've got with a bottle of foam ears.

I just sent a text to SPQR about maybe meeting in Indy tonight.  If tonight doesn't work for him, I dunno how his stuff is getting to Cloverdale.

And I seriously still don't know how all of this is gonna fit in my car.  My 90 lb sister might have to ride to Indy with a 40 lb husky puppy in her lap.  So if anyone has other suggestions, I'm VERY open to ideas.  I'm trying to be helpful, but I have other commitments this weekend that I also need to take care of, hence the dogs and the sister who cannot be left at home.  I also do not have a safe place to park my vehicle Friday evening, so that's a little concerning for me as well with all of this gear.

Lets shoot for 12 LTR kits instead of 25. Since we can't shoot too early - and they're nerds anyway - we'll do a special "numbers " presentation and they can work as a team to figure their own IMC. They can switch off as shooter/coach.

We'll need steel only at 100.

Anyone with ARs and/or AKs please bring them.

Dave, can the range accommodate a .50bmg?

I'll bring my LTR and an extra mat.  I don't have any extra eye protection, but I'll bring a bunch of foam earplugs.
I will also bring 1000 rounds of Winchester Super X.  It doesn't run well in my rifle (7-10% light strikes), but someone else can use it.

It looks like you've got 12 with just the instructors signed up now (slim, Ratchett, spitfire, DaveD, Maynard, right?).  I gotta stop by there anyway to finalize a purchase with DaveD, so that's 18 if I bring mine.  We're at 22 once we get YHJ's.  SPQR has to show up at some point Saturday to get the map banner from me, too.  If we can get SPQR's kit somehow, you should be set with rifles for all, I'm guessing.  You sure you only want 12?

If we can get more, lets get 'em! But, don't leave your puppy in Indy because you don't have room. If we have to run with 12 we can do so. 20+ would be pretty cool - and epic video-worthy. "Oh techres...."

I stopped after work tonight and picked up 25 sets of eye protection. With Maynard's foamies we should be covered on eye/ear pro. I'll encourage each shooter to bring something to lay on if they'd like. Between what we have available and what they bring, we should be fine.

Thanks everyone for your assistance with this.

Techres cannot come and play as he is leading a weekend campout teaching other potentially important life skills to people that do not have them.

I will try and get spare rifles to Hawk and he can get them to Ratchet and then somehow they can get back to me.  No Krink or Suppressor, but rifles none the less.

I believe we're good on ammo.

A couple folks have volunteered .22 ammo and one guy even donated some 7.62x39. I figure we'll get each kid 10 rds on the AK and another 10 on an AR. Ought to leave them with just the right amount of "I've done it before" combined with, "Man, I gotta get me one of those!"

I have 2 .22 Rifles available in Brownsburg if Spitfire or someone can pick them up. In Iowa right now till next week but the rifles, shoot mats, Eyes and Ears, mags, and some .22 ammo all available for use that weekend.

1-795LTR
1-M&P 15-22

you can use the mosin and a bag of ammo for it also . again if Spitfire or anyone else can pick it up. LL is down to 1 vehicle with 2 kids to run around.

Change in target set up time.  Will do it Saturday morning instead of Friday.  I'll be at the range around 0700

I should be there around 7:30 on Saturday morning and wrapping up by 3:30 in the afternoon. I need to be headed home NLT 4:00 due to a personal obligation.

If you guys can get rifles, cool. But dont worry about moving heaven and earth to get them there. We'll be fine with what we have. Thanks for your efforts but this is a fun shoot, not a world qualifier. The boys will be happy to shoot whatver is available.

See you folks soon!

Thank you guys so much for putting on this second event for Rose. I know everyone in attendance had a blast and learned a great deal about our Heritage as rifleman.
We can't thank you all enough for both your time and money that you poured into this event.

I hope these past two years are a start to a great Rose-Hulman/ Appleseed yearly tradition. Thanks!
