California Appleseed Newsletter

October, 2012

(This is a pilot version for what may become a national Appleseed newsletter.  In an old California tradition, we're trying it out here first.)

Marksmanship:  Sizing Up Your Sights - How and Why

Suppose someone told you they had a gadget that would let you sight in your rifle without walking downrange, would help compensate for cross-winds, and allow you to estimate the distance of targets at unknown ranges.  Surely this whizzy piece of gear would cost several hundred bucks!

Actually, the cost is $0 because you already own it.  You can do all of this by finding the size - in minutes of angle (MOA) - of your sighting system, and learning how to use that knowledge in the field.

To find that size you need a visual reference of known size, posted at a known distance.

Heritage:  The 3rd Strike of the Match - A Telling from the Other Side

"My name is Jeremy Lister, Ensign of His Majesty's 10th Regiment of Foot.  I have been asked to describe the action of the 19th instant, on the expedition to Concord and return.

I was a volunteer for the expedition.  Another officer of the 10th had pleaded sickness, and as it would not be proper for the Light Infantry to march without its proper complement, particularly with our Colonel Smith commanding the expedition, I offered myself.  So I came to stand on the Green at Lexington with my company, where we were fired on by the colonials and in turn, put them to rout.  There we were told our true mission, and marched on to Concord.

There again we stood before the colonials, at the North Bridge, but these were more effective.  In the first exchange of fire, they felled several officers of the 4th Foot who stood near us, with their rank and file fleeing, so my and another company also left the field and returned to Concord under cover of the Grenadiers.  By the grace of God, the companies we had sent to pursue the rebels' stores beyond the river returned over the bridge without harm, but brought us news that four of our fallen there had been scalped and otherwise mutilated.  Those who had claimed to be His Majesty's loyal subjects were fighting us like uncivilized savages!...

California's 2nd Amendment Organizations

Appleseed doesn't take sides in 21st century politics, but it should be obvious that we are supporters of the 2nd Amendment rights that our forebears sacrificed to win.  There are other organizations of like mind in California, and we'd like you to know about them:

Calguns runs a valuable online Forum for CA shooters (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/index.php) that includes a California Appleseed board (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/forumdisplay.php?f=222").  The affiliated Calguns Foundation (http://www.calgunsfoundation.org/) undertakes legal work to defend our 2nd Amendment rights from state encroachments.

The California Rifle and Pistol Association (http://crpa.org/) dates back to 1875 and is California's NRA affiliate organization.  CRPA does good work lobbying in the RKBA cause in Sacramento.

Gun Owners of California (http://www.gunownersca.com) is a smaller organization, but seems to be the only that has researched the 2nd Amendment stances of California state-level candidates (http://www.gunownersca.com/legislation/ratings-a-scorecares/item/2454-general-election-2012-candidate-ratings) in detail.
