Title: Hello Pennsylvania, Check in and say hello.
Post by: B9 on June 21, 2008, 04:59:02 AM
Hello Pennsylvania!

We now have our own section to pass on ideas, tips and leads.
At a state level as of now we have three main objectives.

1. Promote the Appleseed events already scheduled in and around the state.

2. Recruit more people into the program.

3. Locate and arrange future Appleseed events within PA.

If we do number one, number two will be easy, and number three will be easier.

kDan checking in, saying "hello".  My retreat is in the Norhteastern, Lake Wallenpaupack area.  Anybody wanna make a trip to one of the local public ranges, send me a "pm".  I'm there as much as possible.

Today, I'm off with a folder full of flyers to visit every gun shop I can find.

Pennsylvania's got a lot of shooters - good shooters - but sighting in from a bench one October Saturday every year does not a Rifleman make.

Love to cook up the results though, with a little vinegar and some mint leaves.

COME TO THROOP!

OK PA, I can not hear your over the crickets. So you don't want to commit to helping Appleseed in your state. I understand the worry of getting to involved and then having to back out. Lets do this; for this weekend you post some pro Appleseed information on a few web forums here and there. Just copy and paste some event info from this site with http://appleseedshoot.blogspot.com/ as a link. Come Monday or Tuesday perhaps Deolexrex will honor us with the results of your posts.

There you have it, no names, no faces, no commitment. Think of it as a one night stand with Lady Liberty.

I'll bet you call her the next day.

Good morning PA! Nice to see you all here.

I shall leave you one short thought for the day. A quote from Mark Twain of all people, a man whos home town is 30 miles from me right now. Read it and think about who you are and what you are doing.

"In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scored. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot."    Mark Twain

Prosit!

Wow! You folks in PA drive a hard bargin.

What more can I offer you?

Freedom, Liberty, Comraderie, a place in History? Three of those can not be guaranteed, one is a sure bet.

Welcome,

But you are coming to Allemans in Sept, right? I would imagine you also can't wait to start helping bring Appleseed to more PA locations, right?
What post on PAFOA caught your eye? It may help with further internet posting operations.

http://www.pafoa.org/forum/gun-pictures-24/27528-m1-garand.html  was the post on PAFOA.

Not sure about Alleman's shoot yet - I mostly work out of state (TX, OH and VA) and I don't know my schedule yet.

The reason I posted was to see what I can do to help expand the Appleseed program.

We have an appleseed program at LPRGC that runs a monthly shoot - but it's limited to members (and their guests) by range rules.

PM me an address and I can get some promotional stuff out to you. One big thing we need help with is postings on other internet forums to help bring motivated people into the AS program. People to scout out suitable ranges and get a foot in the door for more shoots is needed also. Someone like yourself that has the credentials and can walk the walk is a big plus.

By the way that original poster on PAFOA sure has some nice rifles. I trust he is learning how to use them properly.

address PM'd -

Glad to help out with publicity where I'm active - I do most of my postings on
www.pafoa.org - Pennsylvania Firearms Owners - mostly with open carry of firearms in PA - there is a training and competition posting area
www.opencarry.org - national open carry of firearms - they do permit rifle and training posts there
www.defensivecarry.com - national regarding defensive carry and use of firearms - they have a rifle/shotgun section
www.glocktalk.com - international - they have a training and competition area

I occasionally post on www.ar15.com

Let me know what messages need to get out and when.

Hard for me to do range scouting right now since I mostly work in other states

This may interest you and others on PAFOA.....

This is a reply to my Appleseed inquiry on an internet forum by none other than Massad Ayoob.

"B964: I've been wanting to attend an Appleseed event for a long time, am hoping I can coordinate the one in Hernando, FL after I shoot the IDPA Nationals in a couple of months."

I bet a couple people have heard of and him, no? Point being we can spark interest by letting people  know that some of the movers and shakers of the gun culture are into AS.

Cool - I've been reading Mas for years - it'll be nice to finally meet him.

I'm going to be one of the Safety Officer at the IDPA nationals and I'm also working set up. The Match Director (Ted Murphy) is a friend.  I'm sure I can get literature in all the participants bags if that would be OK.  I can also do some color printing of materials on my work printers (up to 150 pages without causing a stink) if you have PDF's or something I can print from my computer.

What general area are you in?
PA is in need of some help getting some ranges online for Appleseeds. As of now the next one in PA will be at Reade Range in Allemans, near Altoona.

Hello all. I am a new member from the Pittsburgh area. I just joined the RWVA when I registered for the April AS in Allemans, PA. I have been shooting CMP for 6 years and am looking forward to this. Based on what I have read so far, this looks like exactly the kind of organization I have been searching for. If there is anyone else from SW PA let me know.

Burf and Pa sub,

I live in NE PA.  Lake Wallenpaupack area.  I'm kind of known as a NYer on the forum because that's where I work and spend a lot of my time, but the not so well-kept secret is that I'm not exactly your typical city-boy.  I was an instructor at Allemans this fall and will most likely be working any shoots we manage to set up in Pennsylvania this upcoming year.

I look forward to meeting any and all PA shooters.  I have been working with b964 on a regular basis this past year and can testify that he is doing more than his share to help the program along.  I, for my part, have made 12 Appleseeds in the last 10 months, and although I do look forward to a bit of a slower time through the colder months, I know that the most important thing is to keep finding people to help out.  We are under-staffed in a big way.  It's a lot to expect of people to volunteer and give time, but as you hinted at, Pa sub, this is a program for true-believers, so those involved seem especially committed.  Anything I can do to help you guys figure out what needs to be done, please send me a personal message, or reply here.  B964 has a lot to do, so if I can help take a bit of the load off his shoulders, I am only too happy to do so.

You might want to consider a Rifleman's Boot Camp.  I believe there's one coming up in February.  I went last year and really got a jump-start out of it.  Plus it's a really good time.

Pennsylvania holds a particular set of challenges for AS.  Being one of the more well-armed states in the union and possessed of public ranges all over the state, locals seem to, if not take their rights for granted, then at least to consider themselves personally to be well-versed in the exercise of these rights.  The Appleseed system of instruction is good for all shooters, even those who may be somewhat accomplished already.  I will say, however, that bending over a scoped, benched rifle twice a year at a public range, does not a Rifleman make.

thanks guys.

Welcome!

Mercer, huh? That funny because that is right where I was looking to schedule another Appleseed shoot. Your probably a member at the local range I am looking at.

Spend some time poking around the forum, there is alot of great information here. Order up Fred's Riflemans guide and target package, and get to an Appleseed shoot ASAP.

Your first competition shoot needs to be against yourself. How can you outperform you. How can you improve yourself, your friends, family, state, country. Sounds overwelming? Nah, piece of cake. You have every Rifleman in the country ready to work together with you.

I took three friends to a public range near Gouldsboro over the weekend.  The place was pretty crowded and the way we ran through semi-AS courses of fire drew some attention.  I handed out some info and talked up the program.

The most interesting thing was the discussion I had with one of the Game Comission Officers on site.  They were all over the place in the morning, but then disappeared after about 11.

I will be contacting the regional office in Dallas, PA about reserving this particular range for an event in the spring/summer/whenever.  This range is better set up for our purposes than the one I usually go to.  Wide-open spaces.  The officer said we might even be able to swing camping as long as it's not hunting season as the ranges are on state land and most of the property is good to go for tents off-season.

I figure I'll start with an e-mail.  B-9 can you send me something if you got it.  You know, the usual run-down...

Hey there PA,

Nice forum and group. Happened upon it by way of the pafoa.org site. This is definitely a place I'd like to spend some time. I haven't shot a rifle for 10 years. Spent 8 years in the Army National Guard shooting a M16, but nothing rifle oriented since. I do shoot a shotgun for fun at the local block shoots and just picked up a handgun and will be getting familiar with that in short order. I'm working on getting a M1 Garand and M1 Carbine (maybe a few of each) through the CMP before the political situation blocks me with the next Gun Ban. I'm kind of a WWII buff so I hope to have a good collection of M1 rifles soon. I'm looking for some instruction so I can shoot expert with an M1 like I did with the M16. I enjoy range shooting, but not much of a hunter. It's not my thing. I believe we all need to be ready for that next April 19th if the situation calls for it. Looking forward to the event in April, I'm about a 2.5 hour drive from the range. I'm centrally located between Harrisburg, Carlisle, and York not far from Gettysburg. I just joined the local shooting club, West Shore Sportsmans Association, which also has CMP shooters as well. There are a few ranges in the area and my town has a range on the state game lands about 10 minutes from my house. I'm up for helping in any way I can once I get up to speed with all the Appleseed information here on the website. Any suggestions or information you can forward/suggest to me would be much appreciated. Looking forward to meeting everyone eventually in person at a shoot.

There are many other excellent posts here, but those three "nut shell" it for me.
A real Rifleman.... is not flippant, asks him/herself to do more, builds a team around him/herself.

Is Appleseed building rifle teams all over the country? No. Appleseed is building teams of Riflemen all over the country.
PM me an address and I can send you some promotional material. Order up Fred's Rifleman guide and target package.
The service grade Garands are the best deal in my opinion.

I've started to wake up ;-)

I'm getting involved with 4 local clubs and showing up for informal shoots with members of these clubs and members of pafoa.org. For now I will start promoting with the information you have given me and drive interest at the shoots I'm attending. I'll then start a campaign at the 4 clubs to have a mini-appleseed next year as well as get folks to the Reade's Range Appleseed. I am assuming I need to find an Appleseed instructor before scheduling a mini-AS right? I'm also going to leave a bunch of the materials at the Harrisburg Gun show on Dec 13/14 if they will let me. MY wife and mother in law are also interested in getting the word out (maybe learn to shoot as well) after reading the SWAT article. It's going to be a family affair now :-D

I hope I'm on the right track so far and looking forward to helping even more as I learn.

Thanks,

Mooney

Mooney,

I am extremely interested in helping Pa get on the trail, and would be happy to help you with a mini or anything else you get going.

It would be easier for me if the event were in the Eastern half of the state.  Where are the ranges we're talking about?

Dan,

Great! Maybe we can work something out in between. I'm about 8 miles from the Gettysburg Turnpike exit, # 236, about 2 hours from Philadelphia, Allentown, or Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Where are you located? The ranges/clubs I'm joining are in Carlisle, Lewisberry, Harrisburg, & Lebanon.

I hadn't given a specific date any thought yet, just thinking out load right now. It may take a month or two to get the board of any of these clubs moving on approving an event then generating some interest over the 2-3 months while the boards approve our event. I'm thinking we might be able to pull it off in Feb or March which should help generate interest for the April 19th events at Reade's Range. I'll be introducing the mini event idea at the member meetings and to the club officers this month.

What do you think? Thoughts?

I think you're on the right track.  Just follow up on any discussions or interest displayed by folks you talk to.

There is a Riflemans Boot Camp that I may try to visit for a couple days at the end of February, so that may be a good or a bad time for me, depending.  I could drive by on the way there or back.  I'd say that whatever dates you get tentatively, run with and I should be able to make it.  So...  bottom line, take whatever you can get with both fists and we'll make it happen!

Welcome Jefferson,
There are several PA members in your area. I heard talk of a Mini-Appleseed shoot being set up down that way.

You are new to all what?
Being American? Shooting a rifle? Living in SE PA? Standing up and deciding you want to claim your responsibilities in the direction of our country, and want to help bail the USS America?

No problem if the answer is yes to all the above. You have come to the right place.

Good  Morning PA  and  especially  the  9  on  the  roster  for  Allemans on  19 April.  My  name  is  Bill, and  it appears I will be  the  shoot  boss.  It  is  my  intent  to arrive  with  my  crew, 2  red  hats, 2 orange hat and  one  student on  Thursday  night  and  then  go  to  the  range  Friday afternoon, and  hopefully, depending  on  wx,  get  the  target  backers up so  that no  time  is  lost  on  Saturday  morning.  You  guys  in  the  frozen  Northland, called  Pa,  know  this  better  than  I  but  I  am  planning on  the  weather  to be  interesting, and  I  know  the  wind on  that  hill top  comes  straight  from  the  North  Pole.  I  will  try  to  come  up  with some sort  of  shelter and  wind  break--last  time  I  was  there the  wind  moved  my  wind break  to  Ohio  or  somewhere.  Seriously  though,  review  your  pack up and  if  you  have  questions  do  not  hesitate  to  send  out  a  PM  on  here.  One  issue  I  know, I'll  will  be  asking  if  any  of  those attending have  any specific EMT  training if  you  would  be  willing to  stand up  and  be  counted.  I  suspect  the cell signal at  the range  is  poor  and  the  time/distance issue  for  local  response is  something  I  do  not  know, but  will  by  19 April.  I  stayed at  the  Days Inn  in  Altoona  last  time and  suspect  I  will  again.  the  advantage  was  that  there  was  plenty  of  eating  places  for  Friday  and  Saturday  night,  the  disadvantage  is  that  it  was  about  45  minutes  from  the range.  If  that  changes I'll  post  it  here.  Speaking  of  food,  the  only  place  to  get  lunch around  the  range  is  an  hour  plus  round  trip, so  plan  accordingly.  Bill

Hello,
I am from the Grove City area. I am a lifelong shooter and American history nut and love everything I have seen  about this program. I will be attending the Allemans event and the July clinic in Beaver co. I will be registering for Allemans on Friday (payday).

I have been passing out flyers, and have one other for Allemans and maybe three for Beaver.

Ready to learn and help.

Welcome jagr31!
Wallenpaupack area huh. You just happen to be in the same neck of the woods as kDan, one of the best Shoot Bosses in the program. I bet you have already ran into him at your local range.

Hope you got you and your group registered as the shoot is almost sold out. 52 out of 60 sold as of right now.
Talk your friends into camping, it is way better plus they won't have to drive to the hotel risking getting lost.
There is a spot for a fire and I believe Mooney (the PA State Coordinator) will be there friday. As you head down toward the target line about half way down at the first porta john there is a cross over to the left side. The camping area is right there with a stone fire ring and what the range president calls "a grassy area".
Bring something soft to lay on, it is like the surface of Mars there. Sharp rocks/shale/iron ore who knows what it is but they have a lot of it down there. Don't bother bringing the tent stakes. Do wood scouting in the daylight it will save a twisted ankle or two and the woods were FULL of bears at night. (just kidding about the ankle thing)

Hello Everyone, I'm a new member of the forum. I just attended my first Appleseed at Alleman's, PA this past weekend and managed to bring home a rifleman's patch.  I am so grateful to the Appleseed community as a whole and to the instructors in particular that I want to find out what I can do to give something back. I'm in Southeastern Pa.  Chester County to be exact.  Looking forward to my next one already.  Just have to pick up four of those little single shot crickets that I saw the young ladies at Allemans shooting for my kids.

Thanks again, Frontsight

Congratulations and welcome!  I'm an IIT from Delaware county - I mostly shoot at Lower Providence Rod and Gun (hence the LPRGC on my handle) -  We're trying to get an Appleseed program started in Southeast PA - Since you made Rifleman - are you interested in helping as an instructor and in getting a program started here?

lprgcfrank, I would certainly be interested in helping to establish an Appleseed presence in this part of the state.  Spending too many nights away from my wife and young children is problematic, so that would work out perfectly.  I am a member of Atglen Sportsmen's Club in Atglen, PA.  We have several ranges there from 25 yards out to 500.  I've been trying to figure out the best strategy for approaching the membership or the board about hosting an Appleseed.  Let me know what you have in mind for the area.

Thanks, John

Hello,
I would love to participate in appleseed.
I am from Northeast Pa. (mountaintop to be exact) and would not mind helping to organize an event if help is needed.
I know that Pa. Game Commission public ranges are reservable for shooting events.
would like to get my sons involved also.

Welcome biros,
Way to go, seventh stepping on the first post  O0.

I grew up in NC and NW Pa and know for a fact there are plenty of potential riflemen up there.  Some of 'em are "bitter clingers" but they can take Appleseed just fine. Go get 'em.

Somebody needs to head out on Rt 6 East and West and hit every club, gunshop and hardware store on the way.
Someone with a huge box of SWATS and BluePress  starts at Gorenflo's in Erie and another at Sportsman's Rendezvous in Milford and meet at Harlands in Wellsboro for supper.

Welcome Biros, we are glad to have you here! My name is Denny and I work with the Pa/Ny team to arrange, promote and organize the Appleseed program in the state . You said that your in Mountaintop, if its the one in Luzerne County, there will be an event in Hallstead Pa July 25-26 which is only an hour and a half or so north of you.  This will be an excellent event with a great bunch of knowlegeable and helpful instructors, sure to learn alot and have fun doing it!  Also, your interest to help with the program is great, and theres a lot that can be done to forward it.Welcome to a great organization with a great bunch of people.  If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Thanks and i will talk with you soon!..Denny

Welcome.
Which gun club did you hear about AS at? Was it something posted there or did someone tell you about it? Drag a few friends and family with you to Manheim.

Hi B9,

Although the Appleseed brochure is posted on our bulletin board just inside the door, it is amongst many other postings, (i.e., guns for sale, local shoots, club scores and miscellaneous events, etc.), making it too easy to miss.

Actually a member showed me the brochure, after explaining to him on my first visit that I had my new rifle with me but didn't know how to sight it in. He showed me the brochure than happily walked me down to help me sight in.

I have been asking everybody I see if they know about this event and do they want to go with me.

We had a rifle shoot at the club just this past Saturday and several people I spoke with were not aware of Appleseed. I happily explained that if they could not make it this weekend, that there is one Appleseed every month from July through December.

Personally, I would like to have seen it printed out on some hi-visibility paper, like florescent orange or lime green, with some take home brochures in a holder below it.

Best Regards,

Brian

Hi B9,

Since I am in outside sales for a living, handing out brochures and literature while traveling around the area would not be out of the question, as it would hopefully generate added interest and especially a great deal more awareness. O0

Best Regards,

Brian

Checking in from the Philly area.
I attended my first Appleseed at Manheim this last week-end and earned my patch. I will be an IIT at the October Manheim Appleseed. I hope to meet many forum members there.

He's right. With a brand new rifle and scope, if possible, it's better to figure out what all the knobs and levers do and send a few shots downrange before Appleseed week-end. ;)

Chambersburg this week-end people.  Get in on the ground floor.

We're loving the involvement of folks out here and it's not the people I expected.  Call me an idiot (it's been done, over and over), but I thought we were trying to reach hunters that pull their bolty's out once a year for sight in and a deer maybe two if they get their tags in time, but no...

Pennsylvania has riflemen even now.

kDan - Sorry I can't make this weekend, my wife just had a little surgery and I'm needed around the house.  Thanks for getting me started on the road to instructor.  I had a great time!  You might remember my nephew Jake - the 13 year old who shot rifleman at Manheim back in July?  He was back this time and brought his father who shot rifleman on the second to last AQT of the weekend.  Again - what a rewarding thing to do.  Hope to meet up with you again soon.  Good luck with the new job, hope you make a pile!

John

John,

Of course I remember you and Jake and I am happy to see you up there in your hat.  His dad made it too now - awesome.  Well, here in the Northeast we've got plenty of father and son instructor teams.  I guess it's your job to work on them!  Ha ha!  Want another job!  Well we've got plenty.  Do your PC's and move forward.  PA is a big state and can use as many full Appleseed Instructors as we can find.  They exist, we just have to find them, and right now, you're up!

Thanks for reaching out.  I appreciate it.

Maybe Chambersburg can be the next Manheim?

Hello again.  Shot at the Beaver Falls Appleseed with my daughter in July.  Going solo to Manheim this month, since she up and enlisted in the Army.  Have a semi-auto this time, so it should be a little less work.  Anyone interested in going in on a cabin at Pinch Pond?

NUGUN,

If you want to use your rifle (& sights) with a GI sling, I'll have a couple of slung stocks that we can swap onto your rifle for the weekend if you decide to go that route.

See you Saturday.

Hello, everyone.  I am new to the forum and live in Kennett Square, PA.  My wife and I joined RWVA after our first Appleseed in Slippery Rock, PA on Oct. 10-11, 2009.  Since then I have attended three more AS events, two in Manheim, PA and one in Athens, OH.  I have spent a fair amount of time on the firing line these past two months.  My wife and I also attended a five-day course at FrontSight Shooting Academy in Nevada in late September.  It appears I have a permanent souvenir just below my neckline from my FrontSight experience, courtesy of hot brass from a 9mm Barretta fired by the man on the line next to me.  I am proud to say that my muzzle never wavered and I completed by strings of fire while simultaneously fishing hot brass out of my shirt (note to self: do not wear open-collared shirts on a firing line).

I have met a handful of you and look forward to meeting you all, as does my wife.  I am from Spokane, WA originally and arrived in the Chadds Ford area via Chicago in 2003.  Looking forward to helping Appleseed grow.
