Title: After Action Report, Shiocton WI
Post by: colycat on May 25, 2008, 10:25:10 PM
I am probably  not the one to start this thread, but here goes.  The Weather was perfect, the range is all grass, so no dust.  The Guy was great, as were all the other instructors.

We had 9 guys make rifleman, myself included.  Another great weekend full of friendship, history and challenges for the weekend and tomorrow.

Hey SS,

Apparently no one from the
Shiocton shoot has a membership, or a computer.  thanks for postings from California.

The reason for after action reports is people from all over the country read them and get encouraged to keep on.

Hey colycat.

Nine Riflemen in a weekend is great!!

The thing I have a difficult time believing is "no dust". How can there be no dust? You were at the two AS's that I was at in Ca. You know how much dust there was. How can you have no dust? Seems like an advantage.  ;) Hey, maybe Funfaler should go to Shiocton.  ;D

Savage,

You would not believe this range.  Its all mowed grass, 2 rifle ranges, one to 200 yrs, the other out to 500yrds.  All green grass.  Nothing like all the dirt piles you have out west.

I would like to meet who the person who was able to get a town of 750 people to build this range  What was the reason.  "No really,  a range is the best thing for us to build, family sport on Sunday afternoon ,etc "

2 blocks away was a family dinner that I went to 4 times.  A really cute waitress l asked me if I had move to town. No she was not interested in me in a way that I would care about,  just curious where this stranger came from.  Most Appleseeders brought there own food, like is normal for an Appleseed.  Not necessary here!  Would have been a good idea for 40 guys wearing shooting jackets to join me, in stead of two.

Hi all,

Colycat, thanks for starting the thread.  I just got home from the shoot and got cleaned up.  I imagine Guy and Ornell are still on the road now as they have a very long drive back home.

Actually we counted up the Rifleman badges that were awarded and there were 11!   25% of the Appleseeders made Rifleman status.

This was a great shoot, not just because we saw 11 new Riflemen but also because we saw some relly hard work from everyone who participated.  That hard work really paid off.  There were also several folks who were knocking on the door of Rifleman as well.  Not to mention I got to see Ed, one of my co-workers earn his Rifleman badge and see his Nephew gain some more marksmenship skills. And Brian, one of my former co-workers knock on Rifleman's door!

I didn't get to work the full distance range but everyone who did really seemed to enjoy themselves.  We are really fortunate to have this range at our disposal and the support of the Shioction community!

The weather / conditions.....   were beautiful.  Sunny and warm on Saturday.  Lots of sunburn, bugs were not bad, wind was not too bad.  Could not ask for a better day.  On sunday we awoke to some rain that moved off quiclkly and remained overcast for most of the day.  Late afternoon brought sunshine and a little more wind than Saturday.

Many thanks for the great folks that attended with their fantastic attitudes!  Everyone was ready to learn and take the instruction provided and put it to use (obviously)  Thanks to Guy, Ornell & JoeZ for the great insruction team that I was a part of.  Thanks for Kaukuana and his crew of monthly mini-appleseeders for their help - again - their help with support vehicles, target line building, and other logistics was instrumental in the success of this shoot.

Good to finally meet, Griffin1340, fepowered, and Colycat....  Bedford, good to see you again, stay in touch men we NEED to get together and shoot together again, often and soon!

I'm really tired so I'm going to crash now.  More later.

Coly,
I saw in the Van Etten thread some one made Rifleman with a Savage boltie .22

Ed, my co-worker made Rifleman with a Savage, .22 boltie, right hand rifle, LEFT hand rifleman. he got a 219  I believe.    I am impressed.

Much thanks to the crew at Shiocton for the great weekend! I learned a lot of new things to try to overcome all the bad habits I picked up  in the past :-[
After re counting my scores from Sat & Sun I found that my counting was off...still short but off ;) As I gained to a 205 on Sunday. But I still have more chances to get to that later on.
So once again thanks to TheGuy, Turbo, Ornell and Joe for their hard work and excellent instruction, thanks to Shiocton WI for having such a nice range!

A happy rifle is a dirty rifle that is being cleaned! A sad rifle is one that is sitting forgotten in the back of the closet....I say stand up for the unhappy rifles!
Always remember to bring more stuff that goes bang!

Thanks to everyone who came I had a great time, learned a little more, and met some great new people.
Thanks to Guy, Ornell, Jrturbo and Joe Z, for running the line.
Everything went really well no real problems I could think of,
11 riflemen out of 44 or so shooters that's not bad.   I know 4 of the rifleman attend the monthly mini-appleseed in kaukauna my self included :)

Keep an eye on the great lakes regional forum for more members who are going to the Lake Park Range (Shiocton) this summer, I know I am, hope to see you there

Congrats to All!  Especially the 11 Riflemen!

Wisconsin coming alive!  I love it.

Just get that spirit to spill over East and West from there to "infest" some neighbor states that just can't seem to "wake up"  ;)

Good job all!

I had a great time at this Appleseed and learned more this year than last.  The instructors and fellow students are great.  They helped me identify some of my problem areas - mostly follow through and my dreaded flinch.  Ball and dummy isn't "fun" but it is a great learning tool, and one that I have been deficient in using.

The history lessons are very motivating for me.  I hope we can live  up to the standard our forefathers set.  I am not there yet, but with the help of you all, I am getting closer.

Thanks to all who worked so hard to put on this excellent program.

It was quite nice to have been back in Shiocton again.  Ornell and I arrived in Appleton late, like 0130 late, but were able to still find energy to roll out of bed in time to be on time at the range.

Kaukauna had his crew out there to help with set up, and we not only started on time, but we stayed ahead of "schedule" all day.  I believe this was due to the good work of the IIT's JoeZ and JRTurbo combined with the fine participants.  Maybe the firm hand of Mr Ornell "I'm not known for my funny faces" Fugett had something to do with this as well.....LOL

Nice to have a big handfull of the under 18 crowd there as well, and they did quite well.  One even was able to go to the KD range on Sun to shoot with the slightly bigger and older boys.

11 out of 44 Riflemen is quite good, as far as percentages go.  We had at least three after the first QDAQT on Sat, which is really outstanding.

This, ofcourse, doesn't count the several previously "made" Riflemen such as Kaukauna and Doc, among others.  Doc, btw, is part of Appleseed lore as the dryfire king.  His very first QDAQT last year (ever) was a Rifleman score, and he dryfires 3 nights a week for 20 minutes a night.  Ofcourse, he repeated again and again.

Ah, if only everyone did this....

A special thanks goes out to Kaukauna who fed several hungry Instructors at his house on Sat night, and thanks to his wife for putting up with us.

I can't wait to go back next year, and I am looking forward to seeing my new Brothers in Wisconsin again.

The shoot rocked!  Plain and simple.  I had a ball.   Earning Rifleman was a bonus!   I want to thank all of the coaches for running a very smooth weekend.   It was great to meet everyone and I look forward to many more opportunities to train with you guys!!

We had a fine shoot. Over 25% Rifleman in any given weekend Appleseed is outstanding. My fellow Instructors did an excellent job. Kaukauna & team were great. A special thanks to Mrs. Kaukauna for the excellent grub! ;D

Now, how many of you Riflemen are going to step up and become Instructors? Your country needs your help, We need your help.... PM me and I will help you get started.  ;)

My first post...... YAY!!!

I Just wanted to say thanks to all you guys for putting this on for us. I had a GREAT time and learned a whole bunch. I think I would have done a little better if I wern't quite so tired , Next year if it falls on a work weekend I will be taking 2 days off instead of trying to sneak by with only one.

Decided I need more guns too ( Not that I really need an excuse to buy more guns , but I now have one.). Not going to try and do it again with an AK. I will be back next year , and I already have 7 more people that want to go (we will see when the time comes how many really make it, Experiance has taught me when 7 say yes , 2 will actually show).

I showed Rog the boot camp site and we are talking about attending one of those, And Deb, who couldn't make it due to the fractured wrist is seriously excited about going next year.

I am already doing dry fire drills, and will be back in Shiocton in a few weeks trying to shoot it again.

Thanks again guys.

Sprayanpray,

Great you made your first post, and are going to stay with the program!  I saw your ak, and it made me think that if I could ever get anyone, to get of the couch, I could let them use my sks with all the free ammo they can shoot.  Like The Guy said, " WHAT IS THE EFFECTIVE RANGE OF AN INSURGENT WITH A AK47?  100 YARDS.  WHAT IS THE EFFECTIVE RANGE OF A RIFLEMAN WITH A M1A?  YOU HAVE PROVED IT IS AT LEAST 400 YARDS!!!!!!"  I really don't need all that 7.62x39 that I have.

Fepowered,  thanks so much for taking and posting the pictures.

I have to say that this last weekend was awesome. Everyone involved worked hard!  I have been telling everyone I know since sunday that they NEED to attend an event! I have walked away tools I will use forever. I didn't make rifleman this time but I will!  I can not say thank you enough to all the instructors you guys are doing a wonderful thing!  Are there any plans for another appleseed in Wisconsin next year?

I have a few pictures from one of the other attendees that were taken on sunday.  I hope they will attach

Well, there have been lots of good replies to this post, but none lately.  So maybe this will close it out.

Just a wonderful weekend, everyone learned so much about how to shoot and how to be an American, thanks to the Guy.

I just love this program,  Fred you are a genius, Funfaler told me never to say this, but I have to.

The AQT at real distance was great.  I did not do as well as I would hope,  but at 400yrds I had 4 in the black and 5 in the groin. (Can anyone say ball and dummy)  Ouch!  As Ornell said with 8 shooters, " All 100 terrorist are dead."  What fun!  I would never have believed that I could hit anything at 400yrds, 3 months ago.

Thanks so much for the instructors, Guy, Ornel Trturbo, Joez, and I know I am missing someone, sorry.

Thanks to Kaukanua and the group,  see you guys soon!

Wow.  I finally got my account activated!  LOL.

Yeah, I know I am late gettign signed up on this site. But better late than never.
I had a GREAT TIME in Shiocton. I learned a tremendous amount of valuable information. Even though I didn't quite hit Riflman on this trip, I'm confident with dry firing, more range time, and a different gun I will make it next time. Lets face it, the AK wasn't exactly the best choice for hardware.  :-\

Regardless of my score. I learned wonderful instruction. I met some amazing people. And I really enjoyed listening to The Guy tell the stories. I really can't say enough about the stories. They REALLY make me stop and think. I could listen to them for hours and not get tired of listening/learning.

Thanks again for a great experience. You can count on seeing me again at another shoot!

Hey Stomp,

Welcome to the Forum.

I really enjoy the history also. It is what made me continue with Appleseed. I listened to the history and can see some of it trying to repeat itself. Especially in Ca.

Appleseed really woke me up.
