Title: Adaptive shooter needs help-w- 10/22 bolt release
Post by: ThaiFighter on January 08, 2012, 08:44:37 PM
"I need a Ruger 10/22 part reccomendation

I recently got a ruger 10/22 to shoot with my son. He's got muscular dystrophy, which means his fingers and hands are a bit weaker than most people's. He's struggling a bit with the bolt handle and lock on this gun as a result. Can anyone recommend a replacement bolt handle that's a good bit longer so he could get more than one finger on it, and an alternative bolt lock. The bolt lock on the gun is a bit of a hassle even for me, actually.

One of the R.O's at the antelope club told me he'd found a replacement bolt lock for his for next to nothing (like under $20 or something) but searches on Google aren't finding anything interesting for me yet. "

I recommended This one that I have in my 10/22:

Anyone know of  a better option?  THanks!

Auto Bolt Release:  http://www.parts4ruger1022.com/ruger_10-22_Accessories/product/Ruger_10-22_Auto_Bolt_Release.html (http://www.parts4ruger1022.com/ruger_10-22_Accessories/product/Ruger_10-22_Auto_Bolt_Release.html)   I have never purchased from these folks, so no review on their service.

Or this one from Midway:  http://www.midwayusa.com/product/568445/power-custom-extended-automatic-bolt-release-ruger-10-22-black (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/568445/power-custom-extended-automatic-bolt-release-ruger-10-22-black)

Bolt handle option:  http://www.mountsplus.com/AR-15_Accessories/AR-15_Scope_Rings/134-SC-CHBM.html (http://www.mountsplus.com/AR-15_Accessories/AR-15_Scope_Rings/134-SC-CHBM.html)   Can't vouch for this company either.

I have seen handles which attach to your current bolt handle, to extend it, but could not find any now.   All that I have found completely replace the handle, op rod and spring, and all are $32 or more.

Found the Jumbo Cocking Handle from Christie and Christie:  http://www.1022central.com/jumbo_cocking_handle.php (http://www.1022central.com/jumbo_cocking_handle.php)   These are good folks, be sure to tell them you are an Appleseeder!

Brownells has a Volquartsen Extended Bolt Handle for $37.50. It's on all my 10/22s.

Part number 930-000-040AE. Phone number 1-800-741-0015.

Hey guys, I registered to post this.  I'm the person who posted the original request on tampagunforum.com.  I just wanted to thank you guys for the recommendations!  I got the Jumbo cocking handle from "Christie and Christie" and also the auto bolt release.  What a difference!  My son now can handle the gun no problem.

Thank you very much for taking the time to find the right parts for us!

You're welcome.

I have seen one 10/22 that had trouble with stovepipes. Lubricating the bolt and receiver usually helps, but did not help on that rifle. I watched the rifle and saw that the bolt moved slower and not all the way back with each shot. I recommended that the owner remove the extended  charging handle. He did and it ended the problem. The extended handle was made of aluminum and added too much weight to the bolt.

I modified the bolt release after watching a couple of youtube videos,if you have a dremel tool it can be done in a few minutes.
