My 15 yr old son Derek and I participated in our first Appleseed at Suamico.  We found out about the event the day before from Rick Jerry, the secretary of the Nicolet Rifle Club where the shoot was held.  Rick talked highly of the program so we decided to attend.  We did both days and it was a great experience!  We learned the fundamentals of shooting and even though I have shot for many years it was amazing how much I learned!

My son Derek was basically a beginner at the beginning of the weekend and is already asking when the next Appleseed is.  He is very enthused!  Bedford and Rick Jerry spent a great deal of time with Derek.

We started the shoot with a Ruger 10/22 (Derek) and I had an old Marlin bolt action 22.  It quickly became apparent that at my skill level the bolt 22 was not the answer.  Derek was also having a few problems with the 10/22 (it just needed a good cleaning!).  Colycat allowed us to use two of his personal 10/22's with Tech Sights.  We really appreciate his kindness in allowing us to use his rifles!  Bedford then allowed each of us to use his personal AR style 22s the remainder of the weekend.  Again, we really appreciated his kindness!  These really made the shoot fun and contributed greatly to our enjoyment of the event.

We went through proper shooting technique on Saturday and did lots of shooting to reinforce our skills.  On Sunday we started shooting various courses of fire in the morning but near lunch time the rain came.  It rained almost 3" over the next 4 hours so the remainder of the day was washed out.

We plan to attend additional Apppleseed events and will encourage others to attend as well.

We also enjoyed the history sessions on the Revolutionary War.  When I got home I ordered the book "Paul Revere's Ride" and look forward to reading it.  We made some new friendships at our Appleseed event as well.  The Nicolet Rifle Club was a great venue for this event!

We would like to thank all of our instructors for their time and patience with us as we learned the skills of riflemanship.  If you haven't attended one of these events please consider doing so.  You will love it like we did!

PS My son and I signed up for Forum accounts when we arrived home.  My forum name is Cowpens after a battle of the Revolutionary War and Derek's is McConkey after a river crossing of the Revolutionary War.
