Title: OTTAWA ILLINOIS AAR.
Post by: Pappy on May 02, 2011, 07:56:16 PM
Hello Group; This was the first of a split weekend  Appleseed, for those who are wondering, all this is is a split Appleseed where a shooter gets day one on a Sunday and a couple weeks later they come to day two on a Sunday... This is a great idea for the shooters who must work on Saturdays.
We had great Illinois weather in the AM and a bit of a change in the PM.
We had four shooters. Harry who had been with us once before a few weeks prior same location. Paul who is a regular at this location but a first time Appleseeder. And Jeremiah who was brought to this shoot by Team Illinois own Out of Ammo... We also had a Range Safety Officer as a guest on our firing line. Generaly they just watch but after some leg wrestling early Sunday morning by Team Illinois own Ewald it was determined that all the Staff Range officers would take there turn at the Appleseed firing line... We are very  Happy to have them with us as shooters as this will help them point new Appleseeders our way..
We made each moment count with the one on one instructor to shooter ratio.
Rifleman, We would like to welcome Jeremiah to the list of Riflemen here in Illinois.
Jeremiah shot a 211, at his first Appleseed. Jeremiah is a Leader With the 4-H
He came to Dave - Out of Ammo, with the desire to be able to teach the 4-H group of youth in his area. I will say this they will have a great Teacher. There may be some cross polination with our two groups as they are restarting much needed a program that went away years ago.
I have PC`s from M1-D and Ewald.

There was one glitch in the day, it happened late morning  at the target line... Our range Safety officer who was our guest on the line placed his finger in the impact area of the staple gun during the target exchange process. OUCH 3/8 staple #) to the finger...
I am still wondering what he was thinking about???  :) ;D Pappy

PS. There are photo`s of our new Rifleman,  who has them?

It was a good day with a good crew. The shooters were doing well so we were really able to progress in the COI and get to AQTs. All shooters cam well prepared. Special thanks to Out_Of_Ammo and Dorothy for cooking us lunch.

Paul ran a really nice Mossberg Model 44. I really give him credit for working that bolt and driving those tacks. I am jealous.

Henry our repeat shooter is putting it together. Stick with it. You are on your way.

As for our guest shooter, both M1D and I arrived early. While consuming their doughnuts and coffee we listened in on the morning staff briefing. Tom, the staff RSO, was assigned to us as he was the least senior. His buddies told him he would be bored and should read magazines all day. The head RSO said he could shoot with us some if he wanted. He also told his crew he was thinking about making all the RSOs do one of our shoots.

The light bulb went off. I simply made sure there was an extra mat and rifle on the line. The rest came naturally. Things really got rolling after the staple gun incident. (For the record it was a 3/8" staple.) Someone, perhaps a Shot Boss who worked at the range in days gone by  ::), put out on the net that an RSO shot himself... WITH A STAPLE GUN! Hazing by other range staffers ensued. The deal was sealed. Appleseed is now part of the range staff program.

Jeremiah is a real credit to the 4H program. He is dedicated to being the best instructor to those kids he can be, and that means learning as much as he can. Cameras are not allowed at this range, but we did rally offsite for a short instructor meeting after.

Way to go Jeremiah!

Sounds fun, wish I could have been there.  I will always enjoy the palce where I attended my first shoot, and then took my orange hat.

Keep at it Harry - come back 5.15, and get that patch!

Another wonderful Ottawa Appleseed made even better with  lunch cooked by Joanne.  Good shooters, good times.
