Title: indy 1500, Jan 2011
Post by: yellowhousejake on January 01, 2011, 02:41:40 PM
The check has been sent, i was unable to secure a free table at the 1500, and time is running out. We will be at the 1500 on January 14, 15, 16 and I need to know who can be there to man the table. The hours are no longer listed on the website, does anyone remember the last shows hours?

I should receive the exhibitor info within two weeks and we will know for certain then. I asked for four badges as any more would make a single table far too crowded.

I will deliver the banner and fliers Friday afternoon, and pick them up Sunday evening. I'll wait and see what hours cannot be worked, and then take those hours.

I can supply a 10-22, but I have no Garand for display, one is needed.

It would also be nice to have video playing, I am working on that now.

Post the hours you can work so we can all plan our weekend.

YHJ

PS. NOTE, if you are planning to work, please check the show rules here http://www.indy1500.com/images/rules.pdf (http://www.indy1500.com/images/rules.pdf)

Show Hours:
Friday 2-8
Saturday 8-6
Sunday 9-4

I am available all day Saturday.

I can bring a Garand for Saturday (Rimshot will be asleep - won't even know I took it  ;D).

And I can bring my laptop Saturday to play video.

I will, though, need some company.  I have a shopping list to take care of, too.   :---

Edit:  I just read the rules  I'm very confused as those are not what I've seen in action.  Perhaps they are out of date, since the date listed is from 2002?

Fat chance they will return your call or even answer the phone to ask about the rules. I've left multiple voice mails with the number listed on the registration form, since December.

Just in case anyone is wondering. The invitation to man the table is to all Indiana Staff, not just instructors. IITs, AppleCore, etc are all able to work the table.

That would make getting your show materials back easier. I need to go through the box and see what we need printed. I am thinking at least the following.

National trifolds
Winterseed flyers (SPQR?)
Military flyers (SPQR?)
A BIG Winterseed flyer 11x14 or more (I can see about that here locally)
Laminated AQT and RedCoat
(I'll get those made, I want them for my shootbox.)
Another board had a good idea of taking a before and after Redcoat.
(I happen to have Niecie's which are very dramatic.)

Do we want tear offs for the restrooms again?
College flyers? (Techres-SQPR, any headway on that idea?)

No problem, but they are the state's materials now and it makes more sense for them to be near Indy.
I still have some National tri-folds if the new ones are not out yet.
Also, have several hundred LTR flyers to send along.
I'll see if there is anything else to bring up.

HH

p.s. The banner poles are painted in Krylon 'Patriot Blue' when they need touched up.

I can make the Sunday 1500 but that should not exclude Hawk unless he happens to be one of those folks who just doesn't like me (I debate it, but TBE says there are people in this world who don't think I am awesome). #)

I will do what I can but my access to printing is severely limited. (I had to leave my job because IU does not allow you to work while you do your student teaching)

I will redouble my efforts to finish up some text for college fliers and send it to techres

YHJ - I like the tear-offs.  I *hear* they worked well in the men's restrooms.  I can confirm, though, that they weren't super popular in the women's restroom, but maybe they took a second look when they walked past the table?

Everyone:
Tips:  I've only worked one gun show, but I've worked A LOT of college fair tables.  So, here are my general tips for working a table:

1. Stand up and look excited.  If you look bored, they assume what you're "selling" is boring.  Wear your shirts, wear your hats - look nice.  A uniform draws attention.

2. Don't have too many things to look at.  There's a limit to what the human eye can take in all at once.  Make sure your piles are neat and tidy, and try to arrange the table so it's symmetrical and pleasing to the eye.  Make sure the outside corners get the "all in one" type brochures so anyone is who is a little shy and doesn't want to walk directly up to talk to you can grab a brochure and get all the info they need in one shot.

3. Draw people in - Say hello.  Make eye contact - they'll be more likely to at least slow-down, if not stop and give you an opportunity to ask if they've been to an Appleseed.

4. Ask questions.  If the wife looks bored, ask what she likes to shoot to draw her in.  Start with the kids and work to the parents - if the kids stop, the parents WILL stop - unless they planned on losing them at the 1500!  With each question, move the conversation forward.  It's like a choose-your-own-adventure book (don't tell me I'm the only one who read those) or a flow chart: the answer always ends in "come to an Appleseed," but find something to connect with.  Busy?  One-days!  Not enough rifles: We have loaners!  Too much money?  Mention all the groups who get a discount - women, children, LEO, military, etc.  They already know how to shoot?  Prove it, and then become an instructor!

5. There will always be someone who wants to talk about something completely un-related.  Ignore what they're talking about and just keep talking about Appleseed.  They'll eventually figure out that you're not budging and either join your conversation or leave.  If they become completely inappropriate, it's okay to tell them that the conversation is over and move to talk to someone else.  Yes, you might think it would look bad for us, but wouldn't it look much, much worse if you're pulled into a conversation that isn't related to our mission?

On printing, YHJ, why don't you get a quote from your area and send me a copy.
I'll get a quote from my local printer and we'll see which is the best deal including shipping?

SPQR and TBE, if you can tolerate a ride along, that would be great.

Chilidog,

Doors open at 8 SAT morning, plan on getting there around 7:30 or a little earlier.
Depending on which building it's in, just watch for dealers walking in and follow them.
Your badges will be at the RWVA table, check in here FRI night for table location.
Please leave your badges at the table forus to use SUN.

I am out of National Tri-Folds, the cupboard is bare.

We have plenty of Women's, SWAT and Saving America.

We will need Winterseed flyers and Winterseed tear offs. I need to update the Winterseed to show Dave's new shoot on the 29th. I will get the tear offs ready in the next two days.

We need the military flyers. I don't know where the PDFs of those are located. Someone send me one and I will add it to our promo materials.

Some of these might be nice.

Looking forward to meeting you, we've been giving several of your steel plates a workout the past few months. If anyone asks if your steel holds up, send them our way, we will make a believer out of them.

Throw an Appleseed steel on the table and I'll give you a stack of flyers to lay next to it. You been to a Appleseed yet?

I will have a TBE's D-target from the group buy with me, and plan on cutting some more of the Stage 1 AQTs as well, so I would be happy to do something with the flyers.

I am ashamed to admit that I have not been to an event yet....Between the two jobs, a wife, and a 2 year old....I don't get to play as often as I would like.

Title: The Plan
Post by: yellowhousejake on January 13, 2011, 10:10:17 PM
All,

I will be setting up and checking us in at 1pm Friday, staying until 8pm. My son will be with me. I will leave everything under the table in Hawk's green box. We get two passes, only two. You can get in if you arrive before the doors open and tell them you are working the Appleseed table and the passes are there. Always worked in the past. If you need to leave to get something from a car don't forget to take one of the passes with you so you can get back in.

Saturday is Chilidog, Auntibellum, Rod, and Locktite. Be there before 8am to get in as an exhibitor. There will be three new shiny Blue Hats under the table for you guys. Sorry for the long wait but we are still waiting on hats from National so I got this batch done at the mall as well. Remember no carry for exhibitors, I would just leave them in the car if it were me. Don't forget to stop and get your rifles tied at the door, though I think Amy is bringing the display rifles.

Sunday is Hawk and TBE, anyone else? You guys already know the drill.

Anything else, call me.

It was BUSY! We had a far bigger crowd than I expected, many vendors agreed stating it was more like Saturday afternoon. So do not be surprised if you guys get hammered tomorrow.

The big topic tonight, "when will Appleseed be at Fall Creek Valley". Well Bobby, when the membership asks us to be there. The board has been presented to and likes the program, but is unwilling to shift the schedule in order to fit us into the calendar. Go to the club meetings, be vocal, we will come when the calendar presents itself.

Hat, badges, all is under the table in hawk's box. The table is located in the north east corner of the south pavilion. Easy to find, we left the banner up.

This is a walk in the park----with JUMBO tenderloins and elephant ears!   ;D

We're out of stuff! Well, okay, not completely. Ran out of winterseed fliers but we've sent Bomber and Locktite to find a kinkos to make copies. Will likely be out if tri-folds in the next 15 minutes or so. Plenty of other hand-outs left for now. Busy, busy!!!

I'll bring two more color flyers in sheet protectors to hang up. I'm getting another 250 printed in Black and White. Hawk will try to get some printed locally to bring with him tomorrow.

As far as national trifolds, we are plumb out.

Ok, here's the run down of materials remaining:
CMP catalogs - out
Tri-folds - out
Bi-fold aticles - very, very few left
Ltr hand-outs - likely enough for tomorrow to hand out when asked specifics.
Women fliers-very few remaining
Military handouts - slightly more than very few remaining.
Winterseed fliers - many. You'll be fine with those after the emergency reprint. I thought 1000 might be overkill...but now I'm curious to see how many you're left with tomorrow. ;)
Have fun!

It was great seeing AB, and the Bedford Contingent at the 1500 today!! ^:)^

It was packed like sardines there all morning.   Can't tell you how many times I was asked if I wanted to sell my XD(m).  No, ATM, I didn't do it.  **)

Did quite a bit of 7th stepping (though unofficially) while I was in the crowd.  I sure hope some of the people I pointed over to the Appleseed Table got there and picked up the info.

Good luck to those working the table tomorrow.    :---

You should still have a mass of Dillion and Swat reprints. Do you need me to bring some CMP catalogs out tomorrow Hawk?

I have about 3 inches of CMP catalogs already in the truck along with 30-40 national tri-folds.
Will pack the 10-22 and Garand in a few minutes.
And will double check for any other materials I might have on hand.

Thanks all,

Wow, what a show!

I decided to head up there yesterday and I ended up spending more than I expected.  But that's normal, I guess.

The Bedford Contingent really kicked it into overdrive.  I think AB and Chilidog were constantly chatting with passerbys!  Great job guys, we need to make sure you're always there on the busiest days!

Glad to have seen everyone.  I think this one is going to help us out for the coming year!

See you on the trail,

West :))

Its official, Bedford Contingent had  blast at the 1500 yesterday! That was almost as fun at a appleseed shoot! Thank you for letting us work the show!

If your not working one of these shows, as SPQR says...YOUR NUTS! That was a hoot!

Thanks for getting our Blue Hats to us YHJ and thanks to A B for the Applecore Manuals and the instruction for yesterdays show.

Great show today,  lots and lots of people, several very receptive people.

The only down side was that we had to constantly hear from our neighbors about how great "those people who worked your table saturday" were.

I guess it's just a lost cause when you're in a popularity contest against Auntie Bellum and the Bedford Contingent.

I was really good looking.  It was that way the whole time I was there.  I was just great.

But seriously folks....

It isn't always easy to go out there and pitch your wares to people (particularly at a gun show where a lot of folks are feeling wary) but we need to keep doing this.  We are doing a good thing for good reasons.

Belated Friday Report:

Wow... It was AWESOME! The whole thing!  ^:)^

I was not at all ready for it to be finished. I felt mostly contented, yet there still remained a slight longing sadness which filled my being there near the end. :'(

But I did thoroughly enjoy every second of it and the memory still makes me smile even now as I type this.  :)

Man, I'm so glad I picked up that Monsterburger from Hardee's on my way to the show. Mmm...   O0

Oh yeah... after I ate my sammich we set up the display and talked to people and stuff - all day. I saw some guns. That's about it.  ;)

Second everything said, talked with a lot of good folks and passed out a big stack of literature.
We did not qute get through the 1000 copy re-supply but YHJ said he had good homes for the remainder.
Passed along contact info for new ranges to YHJ.

Several (very posititve) comments on the bill boards around Indy.

Oh, yeah, notes from the day:

Just as HH said, lots of good feedback from the billboards.  One lady I talked with stopped by specifically because of the billboards and was super excited to grab a schedule so she can get signed up.

A gentleman from Kokomo is going to work on getting his 4-H markmanship group up to Rochester sometime.

The lady at the table to our right is thinking about signing her kids up for the February shoot in Indy.

I think I heard a conversation that a woman is coming by herself to the Atlanta shoot at the end of the month since her hubby and son are going to a Boy scout campout that same weekend.  I could be wrong on the date/location - I was more concerned about my lunch at that moment.   :D

I promised a few that we're working on getting dates for NPCCC - we are, right?  Same for Ft. Wayne.  Locations didn't seem to be the problem, though.  In most cases, everyone could find one close enough for their liking.  Talked to a few people from Illinois and pointed them toward some locations close to them.  Danville, Waterman, Ottawa, and Chillicothe were the ones I mentioned.

Someone mentioned trying the range in Lebanon - hence the note on the pad.  Ignore the note about MCFG - that was a reminder for those working the table.  :)  Also talked to the guy with the range in Lafayette.  Do we have his contact info?  YHJ - he said he has yours.

Scutter (? - I think it was Scutter - shorter than me and had facial hair - one of those awkward moments when someone knows who you are but you can't narrow it down to who they might be...but he talked about spasmo coming to a shoot soon, hence my guess and I know spasmo was there) was rockin' an Appleseed shirt at the INGO table.  (If anyone knows for sure who was working the INGO table Sat, let me know so I can rep him for the free shirt!  He also thanked us for changing the pic on the tear-offs - said it was hard to pee while looking at BoR's face at the last show!)  I know it wasn't VUPDBlue or BoR (duh) or spasmo or Pami or Que or Lars...so I'm left with Scutter, esrice, danielocean (who I think hasn't been to a shoot yet but is working on it), and Fenway.  I'm also deleting this paragraph later so the evidence is gone.   ;D

It was hard not to sell Rimshot's M-1 - lots of people were interested.  He gave me a price to work with next time, though, so if anyone wants a service grade for $2,000, I'm allowed to sell it.   :o

And, there were a couple of times that we demonstrated slings when people had questions.  When we did, people flocked to the table.  It was felt a little weird, kinda like being swarmed - but cool that they were so interested.  I'm guessing zoo animals get the same feeling when classes have field trips.  At any rate, people want to know this stuff.  There is definitely still a market out there within the gun crowd - without, too, but this being a gun show, you'd assume they're gun people.  Somehow, though, chilidog found one who wasn't.

And it was great to see so many Appleseed'ers there wearing their gear.  Ran into Ohm's Law and stschil and West, and it was great to meet Sur+Rifle and Debra.  We were well represented, and we have a good name out there.  Chatted with a few vendors about Appleseed when I made the rounds.  One vendor knows to start pulling the slings out when I show up and cut me a deal.   She hopes to make it to one of the shoots in Gibsonburg this summer.  ;D

All in all, great show.  I'm crossing my fingers that we see a real difference in numbers on the line.  I feel like we will.  And the trick to make it through 10 hours straight at a gun show - 2 large coffees on the way there and 4 bottles of mountain dew throughout the day.   :D

I sent a few folks from the Bill Goodman's show here in Cincinnati up your way for next time. "If you guys want to see a REAL gun show...... "

Glad to hear the 1500 is still a fun event to work. Hopefully sometime later this year I'll get back up that way to lend a hand and steal a chair. Keep up the good work guys!  O0

Do we have enough people to support paying for a table there in March? March 19 and 20 I will be SB in Rochester, so I'll need some instructor's as well. Can we scrounge folks to work the table that weekend, and work Rochester?

We will need a headcount so we know if the table should be purchased or not.

I'm already signed up for Rochester that weekend.  Happy to help out where I'm most needed, though, so just let me know.  As usual, I'm not available for the 1500 on Friday, though.

Lets ask ourselves the question , "How bad do we need this?"  I think we need it.  I think it helps us carve out a place for ourselves in the gun culture in a visible way.  I think it helps us SOM because it gives us a chance to say "let's go shoot, we aren't partisan, we like American History".  It gives us an opportunity to get into the conversation about shooting.

I am willing to work it.  I can't do it Friday but I can Sat and Sun if needed.

I can spare AB from Rochester, if Bill 3 and Amber come down I am good for staffing. All others can work to be at the 1500. I cannot setup that Friday, maybe, but I will not know until that week so we should not plan on it.

I send a call to arms PM tomorrow.
