Title: How did you choose your Appleseed username?
Post by: Son of Isaac on December 13, 2010, 04:40:32 PM
Our birth name is given.  Our username is chosen.

I'm very interested to know how each of you came to select your username.  Some are for fun, others for simplicity; many are symbolic or reveal an aspect of your life, heritage or philosophy.

Why did you choose yours?

Can you please take a moment to share your reason for selecting your Appleseed username?

I use it in other places and can only remember so much.  I know it's lame, but I make up for it with my avatar.  Now that's the question to ask!

My Appleseed username is TravelPatriot.  The construction of my name is quite simple.  I am a consultant and I Travel for a living.  I believe in promoting the mission of Appleseed and the principles of our founding fathers, thus Patriot.

But the inspiration for my name actually grew from a particular spectacle that I have made of myself.  If any of you have traveled through the world's busiest airport (Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport) in Atlanta, GA and have caught a glimpse of a precocious 30 something toting a green, hard-sided suitcase covered in patriotic bumper stickers, then you have been witness to the birth of TravelPatriot.

As mentioned, I travel for a living; not just some, but about 80% of the year.  About a year ago, invigorated by the overreach of the Federal government and impassioned by the words of our founding fathers, I slapped 5 non-partisan bumper stickers onto my hard-sided suitcase and caused an immediate stir in ticket lines, security checkpoints and baggage claim turnstiles.

The messages I chose were patriotic, non-partisan, and most importantly, contained a message of truth that came from lips other than my own.  In order, and appearing from top to bottom of the suitcase, they are as follows:

1.   "A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have."  ~Thomas Jefferson.

2.   "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."  ~Thomas Jefferson.

3.   "The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."  ~Margaret Thatcher.

4.   "Who is John Galt?  Read Atlas Shrugged."

5.   "Work harder.  Millions on welfare depend on you!"

Over time, these stickers wear out and I periodically rotate the message, but the approach does not change.

To date, this spectacle has generated only positive comments and a few looks of surprise.   I often position myself in the busiest areas of the world's busiest airport.  It's a simple act, but I like to think I'm making a difference.

At some point, I will pause long enough to take a photo of the suitcase and post it as my icon.

Special thanks to my wife for putting up with me.   :)

That's my story.  What's yours?

Sincerely,

TravelPatriot (AKA Jake)

Western Rose was one of many that was given to me. At the time, the others were... less than optimal. ;D Funny thing is, this is the one that my Dad gave me. I've never had to make up a username. People seem to be pretty good at making them up for me. ;)

Use the name on other forums as "Pike" is the nickname of my college fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. Not meant in an Animal House way, but to honor the Founders of my fraternity who were Confederate war verterans and the one Quaker founder who assisted his father (they both were Doctors) in treating the wounded on both sides of the conflict.

My first name was M1A4ME.  I shot an M14 for the first time in 1976 and fell in love with it because in spite of the windy conditions that made shooting the M16A1's a guessing game putting the front sight of the M14 on the target resulted in the target going down when the shot was fired.  I knew that day I had to have one and 2 years later I finally found some for sale in a small gun store in Tyson's Corner, VA and bought one.  It cost me a month's pay at the time ($495 was about what an E4 made a month at that time).  I still have that rifle and used it at the Feb. 2007 RBC at Ramseur.  All that CMP 30.06 ammo is just so cheap to shoot I've put the M1A away and started using an M1 Garand.

The name change to Old Dog is another story "not fit for tender new ears". >:D

Branded Opie by a SSgt in my shop at the 161st Air Refueling Wing back in 1990. During commanders call they had the shop supervisors intruduce the new members, when he intruduced me, the SSgt hollered out "OPIE!". It stuck so well that when my wife called to speak to me (asking for me by my real name) - one of my coworkers said there isn't an airman by that name in the shop, and he was serious.

AZ, because my real name is not Ron Howard and I don't live in Mayberry..

I came by my forum name via a group effort.

True: real; genuine; authentic; sincere; not deceitful; firm in allegiance; loyal; faithful; steadfast

True is a word that folks have used to identify my character.

Tenacity: the quality or property of being tenacious.
Tenacious: holding or grasping firmly; stubborn or persistent.

I wanted that Rifleman's badge so bad I could taste it.  I was not about to give up.  It took me three times attending an Appleseed to finally earn it.  It would never have happened without the encouragement of my family, friends, and friendly instructors I was being taught by.

I don't know but maybe it's a curse. It seems I'm always looking for answers and I'm drawn to the root causes of problems. The story of Two Wolves helps me put my life in perspective and I enjoy sharing the story with others.

I have Cherokee and Apache ancestry also.  (Guess I could have gone for Mixed Breed)

A Cherokee Legend
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.
"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Like several others, I had to come up with one myself.
Mine came from a movie called 'The Guardian.'  The movie is about Coast Guard rescue swimmer, specifically about a new trainee.  The film is about how this trainee, named Jake Fischer, develops from a cocky snob to a humble man, who realizes why one should truly live: "So Others May Live."  (USCG Rescue Swimmer Motto) He realizes, as did I, that there is no greater calling in life than this, for anyone.  This learning and maturing comes while showing others around him that Jake is one of the best swimmers ever to go through the USCG training program.
The lead instructor nicknames Jake Fischer 'Goldfish' in the early stages of training as almost an insult, but by the end, it becomes a name that grows on Jake.

When I entered AS, I saw myself a lot like Jake: cocky, certainly thought I new how to shoot, and I thought the only reason to do AS is for yourself.  Ha!  Was I ever wrong.  Again like Jake, I realized that the program I'm a part of is something bigger than myself, and bigger than my personal goals and ambitions; it's for the good of others.  I strive to grow in the respect that Jake Fischer did, NEVER giving up, until you reach the goals set before you, tangible or intangible, but not stopping there; always find new goals and then give all you've got to reach those....

So Others May Live,

Well when I started getting into the MilSurp thing, it was U.S. platforms that caught my eye. The first MilSurp I bought was a low numbered Springfield M1903. I never fired a single round from it and later sold it.

The history of the 1903s naturally lead me to other 30-06 military rifles. U.S. Model of 1917, M1903A3, M1 Garand. My hunting rifle is sporterized 1903. I'm able to shoot <2MOA with factory Remington. Other cals are great but I just really like that 06en round.

The Roman historian Titus Livius wrote of the 5th century Roman hero Cincinnatus.  During the republic, Romans valued virtue, honor, and service above all else and distrusted government power.  In times of crisis, the Romans would appoint a dicatator who would have unlimited authority for a limited time to deal with the emergency.  Cincinnatus answered such a call when Rome faced invasion.  Once he had saved the republic, he resigned the dictatorship and returned to his humble life even though he could have retained power longer.

In the lull that followed his victory at Yorktown, George Washington faced a genuine opportunity to lead his disgruntled and unpaid troops in a revolt that might have made him king.  When Colonel Lewis Nicola recommended exactly that scheme, Washington rejected it in scathing terms.  In doing this, he helped set the United States on a path towards legal, peaceful government by the people, a precedent which still serves this country well.  Many referred to him as the American Cincinnatus and formed the Society of the Cincinnati to honor him and the principle of unselfish service.

I don't claim to be such a man, but I think it good for Americans to reflect upon this principle.

Perhaps before taking the oath of office, all U.S. government officials should be required to hear the story of Washington's concept of service and and of his willingness to lay down the mantle of power.

A very dear Friend gave the name Andre to me.  He literally saved me from the pit of hell.  I looked up the meaning to the name, and found that it meant "manly, brave."  That puzzled me for quite a while - sure didn't think it fit me, but it sure did apply to Him.  Finally got to thinking that He was trying to tell me something about how I needed to change my attitude - my way of thinking and behaving, live more like Him.  So I asked, "why Andre"?  Sure enough, it was the message, time for me to change.

So, when AS came along, and I learned about the men of April 19, 1775, I saw (read/heard about) many "manly and brave" men.  I am working on living up to the challenge.  I am reminded every time I hear "Andre" at an AS, that I need to rise to that standard, and to encourage those I am with to take one more step away from that couch, also.  Since AS is not something I just do for fun, but is part of a lifestyle, the challenge is continually before me.  Choosing to use the name Andre helps me focus on what is truly important, and at the same time, I hope it brings a smile to my Friend's face, for it's my way of saying thanks for caring.

We lived in Taos, NM for nearly 2 decades.
I worked on and off for a friend who owned a gun shop called Taos Gun.
We pushed a lot of Glocks at the time and I was one of the first guys in town to get a Glock 20 in 10mm and then it's little brother the Glock 29.
I use that username on all my forums, even if they are non-firearms related.
Even though we since moved to southern NM and my Glocks see less action compared to my 1911's or MBR's, I kept the name.

A forum name/handle/nickname... Simple, effective, easily remembered (catchy).
A name and character to live up to.

In this case NOT the more recent usage in Batman genre.
Partly - Wizard of OZ, . . . "If I only had a brain. . .", "What would you do with a brain if you had one?"

Primarily -
U.S. "Agency" operative Lee Stetson, code name "Scarecrow". Guarding the security of the nation.
Sadly, I look more like a cornfield scarecrow than I do Bruce Boxlietner.  :'( **)

Two Wolves,

Excellent story.  I am really impressed by the thought that may people have invested in their name.  This has been a very enjoyable and enlightening thread.

Try googling or datamining for a letter of the alphabet... :)

When Appleseed came knocking I was in my dark gloomy mood of hiding and keeping a low profile, a gray man.

So many great quotes for liberty in V for Vendetta so it seemed a good fit.

Appleseed has changed me. I wouldn't choose it now. We mustn't hide, stand up, fight the good fight.

The more I found out about him the more my hero is Samuel Whittemore, there are some parallels with my own life story. But I will never be fit to bear that name or anything derived from it so I'll stick with V.

Verily, this vichysousse of verbiage doth veer most verbose...

Puff-TMD = Puff the Magic Dragon from the song of same name.  With true liberty, I believe we will never lose the magic dragon inside of all of us and will be happier for it.  Also, dragons can be wise and downright formidable.  Kind of seemed like traits a rifleman should aspire to.  I have used versions of Puff before.  Originally used for a username for Internet service while stationed in Japan.

I thought about the appleSEED program. The seed will grow a tree, the tree will bear fruit, when that fruit matures it is delightful and may be used in many ways. Just like the way the Appleseed program may be used in many ways today.  My favorite way to consume an apple is to make tart Applesauce.  Comically, just like my real name, someoneelse already had the username Applesauce, so I added my street address number to make it unique.

I had some thoughts of joining the cowboy action shooters back in the '90s. Many of them took the names of real or fictitious low lives. I chose clodhopper because it was the farmers who tamed the west. Worked to hard to get in trouble, home with the family every night.
Plus a grandfather was named Claude.
So when signing on to this forum clodhopper is what came to mind in the pinch.
Never did join SASS, the accuracy requirements are a bit of a yawn.

Then telling the story Paul Revere's capture,  it occured to me, Paul looked into a pistol barrel and and said I'm Paul Revere.

I have used "StoneDog" in forums since the mid 90's.  When I signed up on this forum before my first shoot in 2008 I used the name as a matter of course.

Had I known we go by forum names at the shoots (and that I was going to take an orange hat) I might have picked something else.

"Stonedog" (or more properly "Stone Dog") is the name a fierce desert warrior society in a fiction series I read back in college.  I liked the name back then and it just sort of stuck.

My last name is Hensch, and "henschman" is a nickname that my friends gave me back in high school.  It starts with a lower-case letter because this is the internet, where it is cool not to use punctuation.  I use it on just about every other forum I'm on, except for the ones I have been banned from and had to make a different name.

Not to be confused with the similar word "henchman" (without an "s") which means a person who performs nefarious deeds for a villain... though you may see me that way if you consider Fred a villain and the teaching of marksmanship and Revolutionary War history to be a nefarious deed.   >:D

How did you pick your screen name?
Let's see...... cswhitfield, not a lot of imagination there.  I signed up on the forum over a year before I attended my first Appleseed.  The primary reason I signed up was to learn about RWVA and Appleseed and decide if I wanted to attend an Appleseed event.  This is the first (only) forum I have signed up on.  I did not feel any need to disguise who I am.  Not being familiar with forum protocol or etiquette I did not realize there were various reasons for people choosing a screen name.  Besides I am really a fairly plain & simple, what you see is what you get, type of person.  After Sanderman threw an Orange Hat at me and I decided I didn't want to give it back I started thinking I might just need to get me one of those catchy forum names.  My first thought was to use something that honored Carlos Hathcock, a true Hero and true Rifleman in every sense.  I couldn't come up with anything that didn't seem rather pretentious so I began to think in another direction.  I have always loved and had dogs.  I have been one of the fortunate that has actually been owned and loved by that one special, extraordinary pet, a blonde Lab named Sunny.  Ever since I was very young I have been amazed and awed by the dogs that served in our military and the important role they played.  Several years back I stumbled across a video on the Internet titled "WAR DOGS".  For those that like and admire our canine friends you should try to find and watch that video.  I warn you up front it will put your heart in your throat and your screen will get real blurry.  Any way I decided that WarDog might be a good screen name to go by but I needed a picture to go with it so others would understand the meaning behind it.  I knew the picture I wanted but could not get it to fit in the space allotted for profile pictures.  Without going through the details and further embarrassing myself with my lack of computer savvy I'll just say some time passed before I figured it out.  The result is the picture you see under my screen name.  Not sure whether I will go ahead and change my screen name but the picture stays for now as a tribute to our four legged Marines and Soldiers.  Many GIs owe their lives to these incredible dogs.  The photograph is of Cpl. R.E. Lowe and Dutch on Okinawa in WWII.  Dutch alerted his fellow Marines to a Japanese platoon waiting in ambush 150 yards away.

Long post for, yeah I used my name.

Semper Fi,

Craig

Post by: Heimdhal on December 23, 2010, 02:17:22 PM
I get asked the question literaly everywhere I go.  So I might as well post:

First and formost, it is pronounced "HAME-DOLL" like Fame.  This is what usualy starts all the conversations on my name.

Been using mine for just nearly a decade now. I am of Nordic and Celtic decent (with a little italian thrown in for flavor) and was always fascinated by european folklore and mythology.

I chose Heimdhal (and yes, it is misspelled, long story) way back when in my days of online First Person Shooter games on the internet (still play em with the same name!)  Heimdall ( <--correct spelling) is one of the more fascinating gods in Norse Mythology, one of the most important and unfortunatley one of the least known.  Heimdall is the gaurdian of all the other Asa, he is a keen a feirce warrior, but he doesnt war for the sake of war like some of the other gods.  He was also intrumental in the creation of the first lines of men and is regarded as one of the wisest gods.

Many of his attributes also bear a striking resemblence to our Republic's ideals when it was new.  We were(are) a union of Republics, bound for the common defence and well being of the People.  We did not make war lightly, adopting a defensive nature instead, but when we made war, we fought with vigorous furry.

Odds are about 99.99% if you see a Heimdhal somewhere, anywhere, on the internet, spelled just like that, its me.  So say "hi" wont-cha?

Added July 2013- The "...that's gross!" was a standard comment from a lot of young people (<25 years old) when I was doing Civil War reenacting- generally demonstrating how a turkey was cooked over an open fire, but also went to other demonstrations of things done during that time period.

How did I choose my screen name? Therein lies a tale... come, draw up a rock to the fire and I'll tell you.

For about the last 30 years my nickname has been Dwarf - I'm short, stocky, bearded, I work in metal (or did back then - I was a machinist) and my shop was underground. Fast forward some years, when email is becoming common... and so is spam. Dwarf is a nice short word... and the spammers were using "dictionary" searches; IE; sending their cursed missives to [every_word_in_the_dictionary]@majorISPs.com. So I was getting more than my fair share of it. Well... a friend of mine had the habit of starting off phone calls to me by saying "Hi, O dwarven one!"... and back then, putting a number in an email address was a good way to avoid the dreaded spam monster.

So Dwarven1 I am. And please... the "1" is NOT silent!!! But I also answer to "Dwarf", too. (Not like Snow White's seven companions - think the kind of mountain Dwarves who crafted Thor's Hammer, Mjolnir)

Post by: Puma Mami on April 21, 2011, 09:28:42 PM
It's sort of like a "Mama Bear" idea. But I like cats quite a bit, and pumas are the largest of the "small cats." They can actually purr, unlike lions, etc. and they keep their cubs with them for a fairly long time to help them and teach them. If I had a "spirit animal" it would be a puma.

In the original language "puma" came from it means "strong." With my youngest having special needs, and doing homeschooling to keep him out of an "EBD" center at a public school (where his behavior would be managed--maybe--but he would not get a real education), I have to use a lot of strength on many levels to get through each day!  :o

Then "mami" is the Spanish for "mommy" and it's pronounced the same. We have a smidgen of Spanish heritage from Spain way back (mostly Irish Catholic and English Protestant--yep, those two sides of my family don't get along ;) ). I don't speak Spanish (maybe someday). I used to dance a lot of salsa before my youngest was born. So that was an inspiration for using a Spanish type of name.

Dancing salsa would have probably kept me thinner if I had kept it up. As it is now, I look more like Puss in Boots from the Shrek movie where he is pretty heavy than a sleek puma. :D  Participating in Appleseed and taking up hunting turkeys, deer, etc. with my older son is inspiring me to work on my fitness! So maybe I'll be sleek once again some day.

Okay I will  jump in .   I had no idea people GAVE you your 'name'.  I logged onto the AS forum after my first AS  (haha i had so much equipment trouble i am sure they thought i would NEVER be back)   and I needed a name.

I have raised goats for , well let's say a L O N G time.  One day my oldest granddaughter was trying to get my attention at a goat show.. (she called her 'other' gramma  . .  gramma cats (you can figure that one out) i guess at home she called me gramma goats to make a distinction.  So at the goat show, Morgan, trying to get my attention and not having any luck, yells out as load as only a three year old can  "GRAMMA GOATS".  Well i 'knew' that voice and the name was out of the bag... i have been Gramma Goats to the special kiddies in my life ever since.

I had the avatar designed as the logo on a website  'TheGrinningGoat' that i had ,  so since i had the handle and the custom avatar . . .  let's just say . . It worked for me.   Now i find many of my AS friends just call me GG (i like that just fine).

Mine was on here. Don't know where it went.

Original was B964. Part number for a cotter pin on a manure spreader.
I work in the parts business. One small insignificant cotter pin can either make or break a complex machine and sometimes a machine can go on just fine without it.

Now is B9.
Still has the same meaning to me but adds in "benign". A medical term used to describe a condition that is harmless. It also brings in that I am a pacifist.
A well armed and well instructed pacifist with a very short temper.

It was late at night and I was in a hurry, couldn't think of anything witty or clever.

So, originally, my forum name was kmk,   my initials.

"Kosciusko" popped into my head for a moment, but  I thought it might be considered pretentious.

My ancestors escaped Europe and  came here in 1883.   I'm 100%   Kashubian/Polish on both sides.

Had my parents owned  a home 2 miles east,  I would have been a K-6 student at  Washington-Kosciuszko Elementary School.

After attending a few more Appleseeds and wandering about the RWVA site, I got a better feel for things, so I changed my forum name  to honor this man:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosciusko

In the opinions section:

Napoleon Bonaparte called Kosciuszko: "the hero of the North."

Thomas Jefferson called him: "as pure a son of liberty as I have ever known."

French historian Jules Michelet called him "the last knight."

Jewish Cavalry Leader Berek Joselewicz called Kosciuszko "a messenger from God Almighty."

Lord Byron: "That sound that crashes in the tyrant's ear - Kosciuszko!"

Catherine the Great called him "a beast."

Mikael Dziewanowski claims he was a "pioneer of emancipation and a spokesman for racial democracy and justice in eighteenth-century America."

////

Out of curiosity, how many of you have ever heard of him before?     Cooper and vmt193 would make  two.

Picked up the name in college.  Some guys in the forestry summer classes noticed my blind eye was a way different color than may good eye.  In Louisiana there is a dog called the Catahoula Cur, so they all started calling me Cur Dog.  I rearranged the letters to make it as orignal looking as possible.  I have since had my bad eye removed and replaced with a prosthetic but the name has stuck.

I chose my name back in 1997 or so, when I started playing online computer games.  I played Real Time Strategy games like Warcraft 2 and Age of Empires.  These are games with a large economic component:  you must find, utilize, and control resources that are scattered over the map (gold, lumber, oil etc.) and build up your economy and military.  I was good at expanding quickly and covering a large portion of the map.  Borrowing a term used frequently in computational quantum chemistry (my area of research) and mathematics,  "span", it was only natural to strike fear into the hearts of my online opponents by advertizing myself as Spanner (one who spans).

Hence the avatar of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the text ".. cover the continent .."

So don't believe those that would tell you that "cover the continent" really means "impregnate the chaste".   **)

I spent 3 years and 17 weeks in the Army jumping out of AirForce planes built by the lowest bidder (never let anybody tell you they are "perfectly good".  Good enough maybe.) in the 82nd Airborne Division.  Had two people in my company break their back and neck.  My name comes from when something goes wrong and you are pulled along with the plane for some reason.  Either equipment gets hung up or your parachute doesn't get pulled out of the pack tray or something (there are a lot of ways).  Anyway, I got some equipment caught on something and it tore loose after a couple of seconds.  Just long enough to drive my heartbeat WAAAYYYY up and then leave me wondering if my chute would open and then once it did, what the heck happened.  It is such a non event that there really isn't much to talk about other than to say "huh, thats an interesting side-story" and then move on so I don't talk about it much.

I actually have a better story about my parachute opening over Florida, but it was so twisted up that I should have pulled my reserve and used that instead (it looked as small as an umbrella when I looked up at it) but I wound up foolishly trying to fix the problem and almost rode the parachute into the ground.  God looks after fools though so here I am.  TowedJumper sounds better than twistedparachute so there you have it.  TowedJumper.

Many years ago I read a series in which a main character was a "F00L", a Jester. This was obviously set in the days where Court Jesters were in vogue.

I liked the character enough that I started investigating what the F00L meant in Tarot cards. The card has many meanings but in general they all revolve a central theme:

QuoteInterpretations:
......It may also be a warning that significant change is coming. Another interpretation of the card is that of taking action where the circumstances are unknown, confronting one's fears, taking risks, and so on.[/quote]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fool_(Tarot_card)

Next I researched some quotes revolving around the word "fool" and found the following observation made by Carl Gustav Jung

QuoteCarl Gustav Jung (/ˈjʊŋ/ YUUNG; German: [ˈkarl ˈɡʊstaf ˈjʊŋ]; 26 July 1875 - 6 June 1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist, the founder of analytical psychology.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Jung

Quote"If one does not understand a person, one tends to regard him as a fool".......Carl Jung

Understanding that many may misinterpret my reasons for using this name I often use the Jung quote in my sig lines.

Knowing that our forum names often become our AS event monikers, it has been suggested that maybe I investigate another Nom de Plume. The internal debate begins  :pop:

However, since I joined Appleseed under Pitmaster I have since learned that my great, great, great,...great grandfather is a revolutionary war veteran who enlisted in the militia on April 21, 1775. I thought about changing my Appleseed moniker to honor him. I decided to just add a note about him on my signature line instead. Not out of disrespect but my identity is known as Pitmaster and changing it might cause some confusion.

I was given mine at my first Appleseed by Andre. I was having numerous problems and starting to lose my 'teachable additude' when Andre lay down next to me on the line and began helping me with his sage advice. He got me settled down and relaxed and helped me get my first group on paper(bad scope). Drilled 3 of five shots at about 3 inchs at 3 o'clock and I used Kentucky windage to put the put the other two in the black. I told him what I had done when we where looking over the targets and he laughed and joked that I was using KY Windage. I returned the joke when I wrote me name on the first AQT I shot and then everyone else(techres, chilidog, etc) picked it up.
Thought about changing it as it doesn't promote the initial lessons that we want to instill.

Post by: Regulator on December 03, 2012, 10:39:27 PM
From the War of the Regulators which took place near Alamance, NC in 1771. Two thousand back woodsmen, many of them Baptists who had been persecuted by the Episcopal religious establishment of the colony pushed back against the colonial militia under Governor Tryon.

"The Regulators of North Carolina were poor back country frontiersmen, mostly Baptists and some Quakers, who had many legitimate grievances against the royal government of William Tryon, for whom Tryon, NC is named. He ruled from "Tryon's Palace" in New Bern, which was then the capitol, and was responsible for administration of the State Church of the Colony, the Episcopal Church. That many Regulators were Baptist is seen in Elder Henry Sheets' book.[2] There was about a 10 to 1 proportionate advantage in legislative representation for the Coastal counties, mostly Episcopal and much wealthier, as compared to the Piedmont frontier counties. In addition the frontiersmen were excessively taxed and were charged exorbitant fees by public officials. About half of the taxes collected were embezzled by the sheriffs.[3] Furthermore, the Proclamation of 1763 prohibited hunting and trapping west of the continental divide in Virginia and west of Tryon in North Carolina.[4] It was William Tryon himself who set the so called Indian Boundary so far east of the continental divide in North Carolina. This limit on hunting and trapping made money scarce among the back country folk and interfered with their payment of the excessive taxes and quit rents. These quit rents were equivalent to modern property taxes and were paid to the King. Many times the sheriffs sold the land and even personal possessions, down to clothing, of the Regulators at auction to satisfy tax bills.[5] The coastal planters were able to use paper certificates for stored lumber and tobacco as a medium of exchange and had a much easier time of it...So the Regulators were simply attempting to regulate the behavior of the colonial government of North Carolina and to regulate the unregulated, select militia of Governor Tryon. The principle is control of the military by the entire civilian population, to put it in today's terms."  http://www.sightlerpublications.com/history/Baptists_SecondAmendment.htm

Name is David - but there are too many of us, so I haunt the internet as Dayid. Most things out there if there's a Dayid, it's me - with a few impostors here and there.

Just stuck a D in the middle and dropped the end R.  It stuck.  Don't use it anywhere else.  It's dedicated 'Appleseed' use only.

Been a volunteer firefighter since 2000. Other than combat, I can't think of a bigger adrenalin rush than running into a burning building.
