Title: AAR: Alton, IL Nov 13-14th, 2010
Post by: Boba Fett on November 15, 2010, 04:51:50 PM
I've got to start this with a round of Congratulations.
Congratulations to Illinois' 8 newest Riflemen. That's right... I said 8!  :o ^:)^  ... in one day (Sunday). I think that might be a record. At least in Illinois. How about it Garand69? Does that qualify as a record of some sort?  :cool2:

Brian Seidor  (217)
Eli Slaminko  (221)
Dale Woolard  (218)
Tyson Lauby  (212)
Jake Slaminko  (216)
Chris Turpin  (211)   - We tried to take a point away for something... anything... but he managed to dodge the bath.  >:D
Cary "Mike" Eschmann  (216)
Joey Naville  (205)

Well Done Everyone  !!!!!!

Also, Congrats to Illinois' two newest IIT's:
Dale Woolard (wooldl)
Joey Naville (mtclip)

This was Dale's third Appleseed and once he shot his Rifleman's score he immediately asked for a hat.
This was Joey's fifth Appleseed and he now becomes Illinois' youngest IIT at 13 yoa. I think his Dad (mtbrass) was a little proud on Sunday and is looking forward to walking the Appleseed trail together with his son.

Also joining me on the line this weekend were Guy, Wade (Our guest Instructor in town from Washington State), George63, mtbrass, and restless. Great Crew and it was great to meet you in person Wade.

What a fantastic shoot!  Great Crew. Great People. Great Attitudes. Great Results.

Saturday started out fairly brutal with rain, clouds, cold (dropping to 40 by the afternoon), and an unforgiving wind (Wind Chills had to be in the high 20's low 30's). Thankfully we had a shed to hide behind and break the wind and a burn barrel and a pile of wood to provide some warmth. Keeping targets posted on soft foam backers became the biggest issue of the day. Despite the numerous target repairs and re-postings, we made great progress through the points of instruction and the history. We had 18 shooters on the line Saturday and again on Sunday. George63 and mtbrass had everything setup Friday afternoon and we got started right on time Saturday morning. Losing an hour of daylight took a bite out of our time together Saturday, but we started an hour earlier on Sunday and that allowed a couple of our shooters to stay for the am and for Brian to shoot his Rifleman score before he had to leave.  O0

Sunday was a whole different story as you will see in the photos later. On Saturday it was multiple layers, hats, gloves... anything to keep warm. On Sunday people were shedding layers by 9am and in short sleeve shirts by the afternoon.

Spirits were high and so were the QDAQT scores. 8....  1,2,3,4,5,6,7... 8 new Riflemen Sunday. I think people were actually getting tired of hearing me yell "center up shooters, we have another one" between every AQT.  ;)  ;D

The weather was great. Everything ran very smooth all weekend. No safety issues to speak of. And the start of a new tradition.
Guy suggested we do something special for the winners of the star target  team drill, so we took down the Betsy Ross Flag and had the winners of the drill sign their names to it and date it. This flag will continue on to other Appleseeds and others who win the star target team exercise will get to add their names to it. Winners get to become a part of living history that will carry on and speak to others throughout Appleseed. They also won some AS bumper stickers for their car.  ;)

Team "White 2" annihilated their star target, but then again... 3 out of 4 of them had just shot Rifleman scores and forth one shot it later on. So it was kind of full of ringers, but hey... Results count and they made it happen down range where it counted most. :~ Good Job Guys!  O0

I had three objectives this weekend:
1. Everybody stay safe
2. Everybody learn something about Marksmanship and our Heritage
3. Everybody have a good time

Overall, I was very happy with the entire weekend and I think I can say "Mission Accomplished"!  O0

Lots of pictures to come when I get them from Jim Ramos. Feel free to post any others you might have taken as well.

Looking forward to seeing you all again someday out on the Appleseed Trail.

Take Care everybody.

Sounds like a great shoot, and the roaming RWVA instructor/trucker Wade from WA - we are watching him everywhere. Eight Riflemen doesn't have to be a record but it does sound so sweet, and two new IITs (did you tell them they won't get to shoot as much?) but we love the help. O0

I can't add much to what Boba Fett has said, great shoot lots of good people. I think we had 2 other shooters that only attended Saturday and would have made rifleman Sunday so I think there will be 2 more from Saturday plus of course all of the rest of the shooters from Sunday that will be out earning that patch at some shoot in the future-  O0. I was impressed by the determination of the shooters both days.

Every one did a great job dealing with the weather on Saturday. I saw shaking and shivering but didn't hear any complaints. Can't wait for the pictures.  Hope to see everyone on the trail.

Had several shooters indicate they would get on the forum hope to see them here. :)

Guy, Wade, Boba Fett, George 63 and Restless thanks for getting some more knowledge into my thick skull. And Reveille thanks for the target line. :~

A great weekend all around.

Seeing the shooters perseverance was inspiring, to say the least.

I couldn't have asked for a better group of people to spend my weekend with.

It was definitely an honor to be a part of it, and I can't wait to do it again!

...Can't wait to see all those pictures either.

One other thing to add to my previous post. Was waiting for him to post on the forum but can't wait any longer - I am very proud of my son Joey - mtclip on the forum- 5 Appleseeds - the first 4 he did both days and this one could only make it Sunday - basketball you know- but he shot a 204 and I was a little worried that getting that close he might get the idea it was impossible - but he just shook it off and came back with a 215.  ^:)^

Couldn't be more proud he has been looking for an orange hat since his second Appleseed-great job Joey- Now get to work ~~:)   ..:.. ..:.. ..:..

It was definitely a good time.  Sunday more than made up for the chilly Saturday.

The benedictions from Wade, Guy, Bobba, and restless where all well done.  George and mtbrass were helpful in the instructions and assistance.

After shooting my 211, the pressure was off and I was able to shoot a 218 on the next AQT (even after taking out the "help" from another shooter).  Switched over to an AR and shot 218 again.  I was able to get NPOA down this time consistently.

Look forward to Jim's pictures.

It was great fun I think saturday (from what I heard) I would've broke down and cry. ;) I was able to make it sunday and on the first redcoat I cleared it up to the headshot.  I got my crosshairs right on the headshot after shifting a little bit and squeezed the trigger and heard the sear click and realized I forget the last round on the table...  :wb:  But to bring my spirit back up we shot our first AQT and with a previous high score around the 160s I pulled out a 196 the next wasn't so good I didn't even score it the we did some squares and my cousin, Branden age 14, had 2 moa group. I made no adjustments then I shot my 204  :cool2: then I got the cherished 215  ^-^ then I asked for the orange hat and was overjoyed.  I want to say thanks to all the instructors and to the friendly neighbor shooters, Jim Ramos, Branden Skelton, and some first time seeders to my right.  I can't wait to share my knowledge with other shooters and practice my 7th step and PLANT SOME SEEDSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :--- :~ :--- :~ :--- :~
