I have a firm date. Jan 29 and 30
Woody
Can I sign up now?

Count me in too... I'll carpool with the MD contingent (yes we're finally developing a contingent!) ... BeSwift
I'm in.
Locked, Cocked and Ready to Rock.
Vacation locked in. I am there.
I love it when a plan comes together. ;D
I'm In :---

I will be there, can I sleep in the garage? Thanks

Woody: Please also reserve me a stall in the garage!
Mac
It's filling up fast. Count me in.
My standard attitude - If somebody lets me shoot, I'll show up and shoot until they throw me out.
My plan is to camp at the range (in the hammock). We'll see how that works out. :) If I'm sick that weekend, I will probably commute the hour from the house to the range each day.

Could be. But I've had it down below 30 before. The key is good bottom insulation (underquilt) and keeping things dry. As long as there's no condensation in the hammock, the underquilt will keep me warm and toasty down to 15f or so.
Mike
I'll be there with lots of ammo. I'll sleep in my van.
I can't honestly say "I WILL be there", but I'll be there if I can.
I hope there's still room in the garage, but it's already sounding pretty crowded.
Dinky wants in on this one, too.
We will only have room for 12 shooters, so if someone has to bow out, please let us know as soon as possible. This will be a good weekend of Appleseed instruction, shooting and fellowship. Does it really get any better than that?
Mike
With only 12 shooters-that's a small 'dog pile' in the garage, but still plenty to stay warm. I can always bring my boxers if you get cold. They are pros.
sgtmace
I count 9 shooters and 1 maybe. If you're interested you'd better speak up!! We only have room for 12.
The garage is open to as many asa you can cram in. I will have thje propane tank full for the heaters

TMI!
Is it still an Appleseed if only instructors attend? I'm just asking.
Woody, can we get a picture of that black bear that was wandering around your yard? We can give it to Mike so that he will know who might come to visit in the middle of the night.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone next January. Remember to bring a logbook for each rifle you plan to shoot.
VAshooter
To finally get to shoot farther than 100 yards!?! Count me in. I can commute it.
I plan on being there too. ;) :D ;D

Just checking,
BeSwift & I are the "Maryland contingent" and we are confirmed, correct?

Woody
Aw hell--this army is going to drive me to drink! oh wait... Never mind! !@#)
Put me in as a maybe. What's the count now?
Ok we may have to move this event. If we do it would be one week forward or backward. Let me see your votes on which way to move it.
Woody
I REALLY hope it's not necessary to move the date, but if unavoidable, I'd vote for 1/22 weekend. BeSwift
This is a tough decision to make. Which weekend is going to be the warmest?? :-\ I'm just down the road from the "Woodring School of Known Distance" so I can pop in any time. Use me as a tie breaker if you have to.
:--- n2oguy :---
1/22 I will be in NC for an NRA Pistol class, so that's a no go for me.
Mike
Either date works for me.
Lets go.
I can do either but February 5th&6th works better.
Just do not move it to the weekend of Valentine's day or I may have to start getting my mail at Woody's garage!
The key for me is advance notice. Either weekend works as long as I know 2 or more weeks in advance. Nothing locked in January or February weekends for me....yet.

We should note that Feb 6 is "superbowl sunday" in case someone has a social obligation on that day.

Do we know yet whether the original date (Jan 30/31) must be changed?
I can be there any weekend, but I perfer the original date. Please let us know when it will be. Thanks, Jason
I have a crazy urge to shoot 400 yards with my .22Mag. Anybody got reliable data on the hold over for 400 yards with a 200 yard zero? With a 100 zero it looks like about 177 inches (just shy of 15 feet!) My guesstimation is about 6 feet of hold over with a 200 zero. Probably 9 inch hold under for 100 and about 24 inches hold over at 300. Anybody got the ballistic computer for 40 grain FMJ in .22WMR? The best I can do is compare to a known bullet for similar performance. Based on amost nothing, I have chosen the .45-70 for my guesstimate. How crazy am I?

The calculator I have (the free Federal one) only goes out to 350yds for .22winmag. With a 200 yd zero (24" barrel, 1.5" sight height) you have 5.8@50, 9.6@100, -16.9@250, -43.9@300, -82.7@350. @ 350yds, your velocity is down to 808fps from 1880fps at the muzzle. I'd guesstimate (without any experience in doing it) that you'd have close to 110" (9'+) @ 400 with a 200yd zero.
From a 300yd zero to 350yds is -31.55" so my 'guesstimate' could be a little off.
Ok this does have to be moved and the final date is feb 5th and 6th. Meet inb woodys garage at 8am
Thanks
Woody
You guys and gals have fun... I have a conflict that weekend (AS related) but that frees up my spot for another warm body!
73,
Mac
I'll be there with bells on.
(Maybe not with bells, but I'll be there)
I'll be there.
Still in.
I'm in, though I'm going to be driving 120 miles on Saturday Morning.
Mike
I'm still in. Has it been decided on Feb 5-6?
Yep, Feb 5-6.
Still In
Are there directions for the Buckingham range? And what is this "LOGBOOK" for each rifle that Doug mentioned? Is there electricity at the range? I was thinking of firing up my chili pot for the event. I can run it in the van for the drive up but it will need to cook awhile on site.

Sat. morning we will be meeting at Woody's for instruction. There is electric there. The Range has no electricity.
Directions to the Range: (or a way to get them)
Directions: Intersection of VA 610 & VA782 in the city of New Canton, VA 23123. Once there go down 782 to the end and you'll be at the range.
There are so many ways to get to us, depending on what part of the state you're coming from.
1. Go to maps.live.com
2. in the "live search" window in the top left corner type "va rt 782 new canton va 23123" and hit enter.
3. Rt. Click on the arrow at the end of Rt. 782.
4. Click on "Drive to Here"
5. Go to the left margin and in the box labeled "A Start:" type in your starting address.
6. Click on "Get Directions"
Logbook: The logbook provides a single place where you can store shooting information for a rifle. Here is a pdf that you can print to make 2 up sheets for logging. You can three punch these and put them into a notebook. You should find a file named datapage.pdf here. http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=13803.msg114839#msg114839
I look forward to seeing you there.
Mike
What do you figure for a round count for the weekend?
One man's "enough" might not match yours.
We will need to zero (or confirm zero at 25m) for sure.
There are then a couple of ways to go. I recommend that most people fire zero groups of 5 at each range. So let's call it 30 rounds for zero and then 40/ AQT. When you do this, a KD AQT takes ~3 hours. You will want to log all of this data.
I would recommend around 250 rnds for the weekend for your primary rifle. That would be zero and 4 KD AQT"S. With some extra to confirm. You may also wish to bring a second rifle to simply zero/confirm at various ranges.
The way I see this working is to use the day 4/5 POI's from RBC's. These have worked very well for me in the past. We might deviate if we think that something can be improved.
Is there another way to post or link to the logbook page?
I appear to be denied access to that content for the time being.

Here it is.
Greatly looking forward to this. Looks like I will need directions to Woody's garage too. I think I was sucessful on google mapping the range directions. Along with my usual too much gear, should I plan on bringing anything additional? Spotting scope, etc.?
Woody's garage is at
1018 Cartersville Rd., New Canton VA 23123
All,
Please remember that the new date for this event is Feb 5-6.
Mike
I was hoping to stop by and say hi but it looks like fencing day Sunday if the weather is decent. I'd promised my son and my nephew I'd go to the gunshow with them that weekend so the rainy day (Saturday) looks to be the best bet for that (so I can put up some fence Sunday).
Maybe next time.
Being that this is our 1st visit to the famous garage..I've got several stupid questions to pose...
1) Is it ok to arrive Fri PM? (likely 10PM ish)
2) How do the dining arrangements typically work... bring a stove? campfire? Grill available? Paper plates etc?
3) Running water available?
Thanks! BeSwift
I will be bringing the equipment that I can think of, but is there a list of "really good things to have when shooting long distance"? I am a techie and might have "one" lying about the house but have not thought of bringing "it". Weather looks like morning rain on Saturday and clear and chilly on Sunday. Day temps 40ish. Still planning the Chilli pot Saturday(enough to share around), will lunch be at the range or before?
Oh, another pesky question: costs have not been discussed, How much cash should I have for expenses like targets and range fees? Will the Rifleman pins discussed elsewhere be there? I will have cash in hand for those also if so. Looking forward to This weekend's "recoil therapy" session.
If I was shooting I'd want:
1) my rifle and maybe a back up rifle
2) ammo for one/both if they weren't the same caliber (one AQT would be 40 rounds, two would be 80 rounds, there should be some practice/zero time/shooting as well.) I'd take 200 rounds at least.
3) a shooting mat so you don't have to lay in the mud/wet/cold (the air will be cold enough)
4) the ear plugs, safety glasses, clothing needed to stay warm, clothing needed to replace clothing that gets wet
5) some folks like spotting scopes (I don't own one myself)
6) a cleaning kit (one with a real cleaning rod) in case you want/need to clean that rifle or get a squib round or drop it muzzle first in the mud
7) staple gun with staples
many folks recommend you bring a small notebook/pen to right down the info you learn about your rifle, your ammo and how you/it shoot at various ranges.
General info:#1-range is private, I'm sure the locals would appreciate any donations but no set fees during my last visit. HOWEVER,#2-there is a store less than a mile from the range with hot eats for lunch. Pretty sweet setup.
OldDog's info always applies. Given the fickle weather a pocket full of hand size pouch heaters would be nice to keep your digits happy. Never forget a towel. Other than that and a desire to burn some powder is all ya need.
Since this is not an IBC and most of the time will be spent at the range and not at the garage we will not have meals ready at the garage. Everyone is on their own for food. I will be gone until late friday night so thje first the garage will be open is saturday morning
Woody
If anyone needs more info you can call me at 434-390-3646
This event was great, guys, so Thanks again.
I was not able to get contact info while there, but I promised to send some e-mail attachments.
Please pm me an e-mail address I can use to attach the promised images.
Also, did I mention Thanks again?
So, how many folks attended/qualified?
For the attendees and non-attendees,
One of our exercises involved measuring the front sight or scope reticule by posting a front sight measuring target.
I drew up a new one on my handy computer, and here it is.
For the non-attendees, you post the target at 25 yards and then apply your sights/scope and you can use the results to range targets of known width.
i.e. a 10 MOA wide front sight means that a 20" wide target at 200 yards would be the same width as your sight.
If the same target is half the width of the same sight, it would be at 400 yards.
I guess it's not really a target, because there's no actual trigger-pulling involved.
Feel free to shoot it when you're done measuring. I won't tell anybody if you won't.
Excellent BD! O0

I would like to thank Woody, and Mike, for the help with my shooting, and Rich for the hospitality. It was good to meet the instructors, and talk shooting. Thanks to the couple that brought the cinnamon rolls and the chili, it was great, can I get the chili recipe? As far as shooting the front sight width, and learning the marking inside my scope allows me to estimate range. For those that missed it, just hope they have another one. My scores are slowly improving, I need to practice more. I shot a 210 on the first AQT and a 223 on the last one we shot fast. I have room for improvement.
