Title: Halp! (Update page 2)
Post by: siglite on October 17, 2010, 09:49:34 PM
 :sos:

So, we're having a 1 day dedicated Appleseed on 11/20 in Eleanor for a pretty big home-school association.  I don't know if this is going to make the schedule on time or not, but we're going to need instructors.  And we're probably going to need some loaner rifles.  And instructors.  Did I mention instructors?

Haha, yes.  ;D  Eleanor, WV to be exact.  Looks like we have a couple that are in already.  It's going to be a young demographic.  I'd like to have a lot of folks on the line for safety reasons.

This shoot is already expecting a turnout of at least 30, so it's turning into an "all hands on deck" affair. Oh, did I forget to mention most of the shooters are kids, probably in need of loaner rifles?  :sos:

95% chance I can be there and maybe bring an extra Orange Hat, as well as at least 3 loaner rifles and gear as needed.
I can firm up within 48 hrs if you still need the "halp"....   BeSwift

BeSwift, if you can make it, that would put us at six with a tentative 7th and 8th in PM.  I think that will probably be enough to cover it.  It represents roughly a 5:1 (or better) student:instructor ratio.  And I think that's probably enough.  I think that ratio will be nearly optimal with the number of young shooters we'll have.

Do we have any idea on exactly how many loaners are needed?

Also, who's shoot bossing this?  I've got a shooter demographic spurred suggestion.

This will be very interesting to say the least! I am looking into providing cold weather shelter of some sort at the range.

Sorry to butt in.  Couldn't help myself  :-)

Although the pre-reg indicates there is a limit of 22.

Eleanor, WV                    18/22

Are you allowing 8 walk on's ?

So you had better have at least 30 rifles then.

If they don't have rifles, they probably don't have ammo.

You should probably contact them all to find out if any have rifles, send them the  'what to bring'  info sheet.  They do know its 2 days of 8 hours solid, don't they ?

Elbow pads, long shirts just something to protect the elbows.  I hate to say it, but kids are mostly soft nowadays.  Getting bleeding, sore elbows after an hour won't be good.

YMMV.

Marrandy,
The shoot in question is not the one on the schedule... Nov 6-7 is a 2 day shoot and Nov 20 is a one day (the subject of the Halp request). We have the numbers set up low on Eventbrite. We can handle 30 shooters physically. Some of the attendees should have their own rifles, what siglite is doing is trying to come up with an above average number of loaners, since some youth shooters will not have rifles that day. We will have extra ammo etc on hand also... thanx for the headsup tho.

Ok, this one's on the eventbrite schedule, and it's on the instructor schedule now.  So if everyone that's volunteered in this thread could shoot a message to Instructor Scheduling and hop on the schedule, I'd appreciate it. :)

Yep, I got it.  I just haven't had much time recently.  I was already tossing around the idea of doing exactly what you suggested.  I think your suggestions seal the deal.  This AS is going to be a real challenge from a time-monkey perspective for a bunch of reasons.  We'll have to have a good pre-seed meeting among all the instructors, and get things down to operation like a well-oiled machine, but still maintain flexibility.

This one's going to be neat from an instruction perspective.

We are currently showing 19 of 25 pre-registrations.  I just spoke with the individual coordinating this shoot with the HSA, and am being told to expect "at least" 8 more, because some of them are having trouble with Paypal.

I'm afraid that I can't come down there to halp out that weekend - I'll be running a Turkey Shoot for my Lodge - but having had the AS from hell an AS with a lot of homeschoolers last year in Throop, with a lot of brand-new shooters, perhaps I can offer some advice.

First, you're absolutely correct about needing a LOT of loaner rifles and a LOT of Red Hats. You will NEED them. Seriously. Go read the public AAR and the IAAR at the links below.

http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=6745.0
http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=6772.0

You sure you still want to have a 5:1 student ratio?

Second, adjust your expectations accordingly. This was my first shoot as a Shoot Boss and I was sure that the fact that we had NO Riflemen was my fault. I'd run it wrong, or done something wrong. I was ready to quit because I was just sure that this showed I didn't know what I was doing. Fortunately, my IITs dope-slapped me and reminded me of just how raw a line we had - 11 out of 26 shooters who'd never shot before?? We made a lot of progress with them for what we had. So be aware that you will probably not need to have many (if any) Rifleman patches - you will be doing a LOT of hammering basics into new shooters. That's fine - I'm just saying that you should know this going in, especially where you have only one day with them.

Now that I've depressed you, remember that many of these people will get their first exposure to shooting from you guys - so be careful of what you do! You'll be doing a LOT of one-on-one instruction, and these guys will need it. They'll also need some lists ahead of time on what to bring - if this is their first time shooting, they won't know so you guys need to lay the groundwork.

Good luck, guys. If it was another weekend I'd try to get down there to help out, but like I said, I'm committed already.

UPDATE:

I am now hearing from the HSA coordinator that eventbrite is reporting the shoot sold-out, and they have 11 more people coming.  I told them to show up and bring their fees with them.

We're gonna have a full house, folks.

Excepting minimal staffing to run Stinson, this is an all-hands-on-deck shoot, folks.

We've got a potential Boy Scout and a separate Eagle Scout shoot coming together for the Spring. This shoot will give the MD contingent a head start in what to expect in our near future. Wouldn't miss it for the world and looking forward to the challenge!!... As we get closer, an expected weather update prior would be a good thing..especially in the transition season  (70 and nice? or 20 deg with snow and wind? )   .... Thx   BeSwift

Dear Siglite,

BeSwift and I are joining you Saturday.

I'm working my way up, so should I prepare an IIT2PC for you (or demonstrate/recite the material)?

I'm asking now because it appears that we'll have alot to do Saturday, and I'm guessing you'll want to manage the time to maximize the benefit to the Students.

Thanks

For PC stuff, you'll need to remind me that you need to demonstrate things.  I expect this shoot to move like a whirlwind.  My focus is going to be nearly 100% on the safety of the line, due to the volume of youngsters.  If, for some reason, (and this goes for any IIT at this shoot turning in a PC) we fail to get in the needed demonstrations during the shoot, I'll be around and we can have you demo for the other instructors afterward.

I want to thank every single instructor that came to this shoot.  Many of you travelled, some of you quite a ways.  I'll talk about this more in the AARs, but each of you contributed significantly.  I can't tell you how glad I am that so many answered the call.  You guys got in your cars, drove for hours, brought piles of rifles, and because of your efforts, we had a great, and most importantly, safe shoot.

I want my opinion on this to be crystal clear.  The instructor-to-student ratio made this shoot possible.  I think if we'd been short even one or two of you, we would have had significant safety issues.

And in case you're wondering if it was worth it, you should be aware of this.  A couple of those home-school parents are in my facebook friends list.  When I arrived home and hopped on facebook, a significant thread was running in one of their statuses about this shoot.  They were absolutely RAVING about Appleseed.

Thank you.  All of you.  You reached some Americans today.

Well, not to speak for Mac here, but one of the major purposes of his building the Liberty Range at PCGC, was to allow AS some flexibility on event scheduling there.  Soooo, I think we could take shameless advantage of that, and schedule one darn near any time we like.  So, I'm thinking I might just have to bounce that question back in your direction.   >:D  When are we doing this again?  :D

I think, as long as we have 60 days notice or so, we can have a nice solid instructor corps on hand to run the shoot. :)

I'm open to whenever.  It should be warm tho... they aren't the hardiest bunch. LOL  I know April is going to be a very busy month with the big shoot.  I'm not opposed to March (if you want to get people excited about the April and May events) but we still have the probability of funky weather.
Tell me when's good and I'll do everything I can to help make it happen.

OH... and speaking of helping make it happen.  I stopped in a new gun store here close today.  It's called Herd Tactical and I talked to him about Appleseed.  He's familiar with it and wants literature for his counter!   Then he talked me into S&W AR .22.  LOL (:
