Title: OH After Action Reports: Find Your Event; Share Your Experience! *Updated 10/27*
Post by: MeanStreaker on March 29, 2010, 12:24:33 PM
This post will maintain a list of links to all Ohio After Action Report threads so we don't have to search through back pages to find our events.

We hope that Students and Instructors alike will post their thoughts about their Appleseed and will use these After Action Reports to reconnect with the friends they made!

Please click on the link to your shoot below and post your thoughts there.

It was a pleasure having you at the Miamisburg event Jim.  That AAR should be up and running shortly.

Thanks for posting the Ohio schedule on ARFcom.  I just replied to it.  Now I know who started that thread.  hehe.

Man... What is up with that SBIT (Shoot Boss In Training)? It's late Monday afternoon and still no AAR posted !!!  ::) What's up with that Meanstreaker?  I thought you trained him better than that.  >:D  A good Shoot Boss  %) would have had that AAR ready to go in a text file prior to the shoot and then all he would have had to do is plug in the official numbers and tweak it a little. He could have it posted, theoretically, a few minutes after the shoot is over.  Come on Dry Fire!  ~~:) We're waiting here.  &)

I'll second Jim's compliments - all of you put on an outstanding event, I feel lucky to have had such a squared away crew heading up my first appleseed.

Here's hoping for a warmer and drier one next time...

Hey now, I got the IAAR up and the AAR is started, I just need to get time away from these puppies to flesh it out. Anyone know a sure fire way to keep 7 week old puppies from peeing on my kitchen floor? Lol. I was so tired this morning I went into work, checked the schedule, put in for PTO and came back home for another 2 1/2 hours of sleep plus another 1 1/2 hour nap this afternoon. I thought the SB job was supposed to be an easy one  ++) .

Hehe, how many of us can't wait for Boba's first shoot as SB?  I'm thinking we can start posting in the IL board at about 7:00 PM CST asking where that AAR is.  :)

hey guys!  Just wanted to say thanks again!  This weekend was badass  :---

I learned a ton too!  Night and day difference from where I was.  I've already been trying to figure out when I can make it to my next appleseed.  Looking forward to having the honor of shooting with you all again soon.

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks." - Thomas Jefferson

Good thing I don't have to worry about such things happening anytime soon. Some of us have brains  ++) and know better than to fall for that whole glory, fame, and big bucks BS about being a Shoot Boss.  :cool2:

I have a dumb question. Should I be shooting with both my eyes open. I normally shoot with my left eye closed. Do you think It will help me to shoot both eyes open?

I have a dumb question. Should I be shooting with both my eyes open. I normally shoot with my left eye closed. Do you think It will help me to shoot both eyes open?

I'll be interested to read what others say, but I'll venture my $0.02 worth.

I think it's better to shoot w/ both eyes open, assuming you're shooting on your dominant eye side. (For example, if your right eye is dominant, then shooting right handed.) But if you're shooting cross-dominant, then you might have to keep one eye closed. I had this problem as a kid. Did wonders for me when someone told me to shoot left-handed, which I still do. (I'm strongly left-eye dominant)

But yeah, I suspect both-open, if possible, is better. As long as you remember and do Step 4a of the "6 Steps"

Good thing I don't have to worry about such things happening anytime soon. Some of us have brains  ++) and know better than to fall for that whole glory, fame, and big bucks BS about being a Shoot Boss.  :cool2:

No "SB BS" for you, huh? What about the doubling of your RWVA salary which comes with it?!? :)

Fuzzy,
I believe I covered that under the "Big Bucks" section in my previous post. Not falling for it. No sir eee. ;)

Hey M60, this is a question that usually ends up like a 9mm vs .45 debate.  :)  It's a personal thing for everyone and you'll want to do what's most comfortable.  FOR ME, I advise people that of course closer carbine type shooting and definitely handgun shooting you should always have both eyes open so you can have better peripheral vision and a wider field of view.  As you know, Appleseed isn't about that and our targets are at much longer distances and we're going for precision, so I recommend keeping both eyes open until you identify your target, then close your non-dominant eye to make it easier and quicker to focus on that front sight.

That's how I do it.  Some can shoot with both eyes open at Appleseed distances, but it takes a ton of practice to make sure you're doing it correctly and efficiently.

Thanks for the response!
I have a cross dominant 9yo who is trying to figure out how to shoot accurately now.
This conversation should help me be able to help him.

I should have prefaced my response to M60 above to say that those "both eyes open" thoughts apply to someone that has the same dominant eye and dominant hand (i.e right eye dominant and right handed).  I thought that's what M60 was asking about and may have assumed incorrectly.

RPD, in your case, the cross-dominance (meaning left eye dominant and right handed) is a little different.  If you think it might be just a slight cross-dominance and if the shooter is young enough (meaning inexperienced enough), then getting started with training early on working with that non-dominant right eye for shooting (if a right handed shooter) can maybe help re-train it.  This can be helped by putting tape over safety glasses of the dominant eye and doing a few other exercises.  If it's a strong cross-dominance where a little bit of re-training isn't possible for shooting, then your next move is to just get them set up shooting left-handed.  But at that age with (I'm guessing) little experience, you might be able to help re-train the eye for shooting.

Again, just my two cents. :)

I'm strongly right-handed and stronly left-eyed (and that's a real nuisance!)

As a kid I (maybe 8 or so) I started shooting pellet rifles, and shotguns a little later. When I was 11, a trap & skeet instructor got me me to start shooting left-handed, and it helped me a lot. That's the way I shoot now.

A couple of years ago I heard this cross-dominance question asked at a panel session at the Small Arms Firing School (Pistol) at Camp Perry. The Instructor indicated that there are pros & cons but seemed to come down on the side of saying you should shoot on your dominant-eye side(consistent with what that trap & skeet instructor taught me years ago). Now this Army Marksmanship Unit instructor was talking about pistol shooting, but it seems to me that it would apply even more to rifle shooting.

There are drawbacks to shooting left-handed, of course, and some more obvious than others. Basically, all the equipment is designed for righties. Operating the bolt without breaking Steady-Hold-Factors is more difficult. You have to reach with your left hand (trigger hand) up over the rifle to the other side. Difficulty compounded (slightly) if you're actually right-handed and have to do this. Also, I've thought about trigger-control. If I'm strongly right-handed but operating the trigger with my left hand, am I getting the best trigger control possible? For me, I don't think it's an issue, but it's something to think about.

On the other hand, sight alignment, sight picture, and focusing the eye on the front sight are so important that, based on my own experience, I agree with those I've heard in the past who say "shoot on your dominant-eye side". I think the eye-dominance is more important than the hand-dominance, even when compounded by the fact that all equipment is right-hand oriented.

RPD,

The 4H Shooting Sports Inst also encourage shooting dominate eye. Ralph is an instructor and has taught many kids to shoot to the dominate eye when cross dominance was present. (Just as Fuzzy referred.) My son in law is right handed but left eye dominate and is learning to shoot left-handed, he says it is actually easier. I am sure if you need any help, Ralph would be glad to give you ideas to help or even do some range time if it would help.

THanks NR.

Meanwhile, I've gotten interested and poked around on these forums.

Learning to shoot left handed is one solution. Another popular one, as Meanstreaker mentioned, is covering or at least closing the dominant eye and shooting right handed.

Here are some links which may be helpful. Bottom line: there's a good bit of ambiguity on this question!

M60,
Thanks for the question, that spurred these others to give me help in training my 9yo.

MS, NR FM,
  GREAT advice!
Daniel has been at 3 Appleseeds and has been shooting with his off-dominant eye (right) since
the middle of the first.  I'm going to read everything and take him out back and see how he reacts
to each of the suggestions.    I don't know how strongly dominant his left eye is and this should help
to determine that.  He has said that he is comfortable shooting right-eyed, but he is still having some
trouble.

Julia, is Ralph going to be at the meeting on the 9th?  If so, I'll talk to him there.

Thanks to all of you!!!
Rob

Just returned from an Event in New Philly.  Took one of my daughters, niece, and one of my sons and three friends.  Unbelievable!  Cannot believe the level of expertise and knowledge that was shared.  A huge Thank You! to all the folks involved.  I loved the history of our past.  If I wasn't so tired I would be up all night thinking of the weekend!  some of us it was the only the first or second times we had shot a rifle and skills we came away with were amazing ( as well as a Rifleman patch!).  I cannot wait to shoot again and increase my level of expertise.  Kudos to MeanStreaker for a great event!  Thank you from Orrville!

Thanks for coming out.  It was my first event as an Instructor In Training, and I do not think that I could have been blessed with students more willing to learn.

Amazing group of people that came out, I hope to see all of you again in the future.  Thanks for making it an event to remember.

Keep up that dryfire practice  O0
