The perfect opportunity to brush up on your Instructor skills before the BIG April 17-18, 2010 Nationwide Event! We will be having an Instructor's Boot Camp on March 13-14, 2010 at Piru, CA! Don't miss out on this great opportunity! Besides the wealth of knowledge that will be passed on, there will be the commoradery with some of the best folks you ever met! SO, you will want to make sure to plan on camping at the range and all you IIT's get signed up as soon as possible! This is also a great opportunity for RedHats to brush up, so if you have already been to an IBC, you may attend this one for free! Please contact me by pm to sign up for this event.

Who is to attend? So far, Liberty Minded has made the commitment. We have 2 pre-reg's. You don't want to miss this one folks! It is right before the All Hands On Deck weekend of April 17-18. For RH's and SB's, this is a great refresher! If you are to attend, post here. We will be camping a the range, the fellowship will be great!

Post by: V on February 11, 2010, 03:27:17 PM
Bob, Savage, correct me if I get any of this wrong...

So RHs and SB's attending for "refresher" don't count as attendees and therefore don't pay. They are just "auditing the class" for free BUT ONLY if they have previously attended and graduated an IBC. So if you got RH/SB by the "trail method" and now attend an IBC you need to register and pay.

Do women, under 21 and active Mil/Guard/Reserve attend IBCs free?

I will be happy to attend and camp out and get to meet DragonWood and all the other fine folk who have stepped up to become some of the finest rifle marksmanship instructors on the planet.

Cheers
Phil

We should be mostly set up by then anyway so we can start drinking from the firehose by 8:30, earlier if all are in attendance and ready.

Looking forward to seeing everyone too.

Jacques, I hope Jessica can make it.

Sespe I hope you can be there as well. I know how trying to get off work can be.

Hi Freeman,

Excellent!! Will you be camping with us? There is lots of room. We will likely be arriving on Friday.

FYI for those out of area attendees:

There are stores off the I-5 for supplies before you go off onto Hwy 126.

Offramp is Lyons Ave. Go left and there is a Walmart, and a Ralphs. Lots of other stores too if you need something specific.

After those there are 2 liquor type convienence stores in Piru. Ice is available there.

See you all there.

I will be camping; that'll be half the fun. I will be arriving late Friday, probably around 9:00. What are the camping facilities/parameters? Are we allowed to have a fire? Are there restrooms close by or should I bring a PETT?

We camp on the lower range, which is a relatively nice flat area. There is a porta john on the upper range, it is an easy walk up to it.

We can have a contained fire.  O0

I was just a late bloomer on picking up the IIT status for the forum.  So I skipped it, kinda, and went straight to IIT1 after my first PC went through. I  couldn't access the sign up page at the time. As long as you have access to the IBC registration and you're registered, you're all good. I'll see you there then? ::)

Oh, my.....we are gonna have some -funnnnn- with these folks......Free, Jessica, TS.....the very -best- way to get started as a new IIT is a weekend long dunk in the deep end of the AS pool, sampling the "water cannon of Info" I know SS will have for you..... ;) @)

Look at the bright side....at least Fred won't be out, wandering the line, rubbing his chin, staring at ya....... O0 ^:)^ **) It'll just be some nice, calm folks, working to make it all make sense.....quickly......not to say Fred the Helpful is -NOT- calm, and nice.....but he does make some folks a bit nervous for some reason......I'm still tryna figure that one out.....he's always been really nice with all us Cali folks......personally, I think he likes us..... There is no requirement to attend an IBC other than an intent and ability to be an instructor. You don't even have to have shot Rifleman because remember the score can be waived by an MI to become an IIT, you just can't make instructor without the score. You have shot Rifleman and become an IIT so an IBC is the ideal way to start your instructor career! After the IBC at your next AS event you will be assigned an IIT rating based on the IBC SB and the AS SB determination of your abilities. Typically you will graduate as an IIT2 or IIT3. Then you do a few more shoots on the trail, doing the necessary PC's and showing the abilitiy to take your Instructor PC.

Cheers

I've got a bundle of wood that we didn't burn this winter, I'll donate to the campfire pile.

Looking forward to soaking up a little Socal sunshine and a lot of rifle craft/history.

And since most of the folks who are running the camp have taught at Boulder City NV, Appleseeds it will be nice to see some familiar faces.

Shooting is a family affair in Trebleshooters family. Dad, mom brothers and sisters all come to the events. I've shot next to them at several events. Can't say for for sure if all have, but most of them have shot Rifleman score.

I can vouch that she has met this requirement.

This a great opportunity for the new IIT's.  You'll learn EXACTLY how to present the instruction and not develop the bad habits that some of us did &)  Guilty!! ++)

OK folks, this IBC, besides being a great refresher for Shoot Boss's and Red Hats alike, is the perfect place to pick up supplies for the upcoming shoots, especially the April 19th weekend. So go through your supplies and make a list of the items you need. Get that list to either V or myself in a timely manner and we will do our best to make sure the supplies are at the IBC for you to pick up. See you in Piru!

I thought I should make sure everyone knows where to find the items that you should bring with you.

Here is the:

Hey Welcome Mike,

I notice on your other post (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=3064.msg100415#msg100415) that you are attending your "first appleseed". You do realise that this March 13/14 event is an "Instructor Boot Camp" and not an "Appleseed Event". At an IBC we are teaching people who have shot Rifleman score at an Appleseed Event and who want to be instructors how to instruct and the program of instruction, etc. There is no shooting at an IBC.

The next Appleseed Event at Piru is on March 20-21, here you do two days of shooting instruction and history and heritage immersion.

Just making sure there is no misunderstanding or confounding of expectations  :)

Cheers
Phil

Little lost IIT here...

Well, my trip to Florida got scrubbed, so looks like I can make it after all.  Signing up with dispatch.

I'm feeling a bit underprepared.  Besides fresh instructor manual, good attitude, and survival gear for the hostile lands of Piru, what am I forgetting to bring?

Who wants to do some shooting Fri Afternoon?

I'm going to get there around 2:30, set up some backers and go.  Xeyed wants to shoot some AQT's to get his 210 and I got a new "toy" to run O0  If you have the time, come on out.  Maybe some friendly instructor competion. ;)

Also, what is the plan for meals?  Last time I was there we did our own lunch and there was a "community" dinner.  Is that the plan or is it bring your own?

I look forward to seeing a bunch of my friends I haven't seen in a while and new friends I will meet for the first time.

Since we did not figure out a menu and who should bring what, we should all plan on doing our own meals, for the most part anyway. We will all be eating at the same time. There is always the opportunity to share. Seems we do that anyway.

I will have a campstove... Is someone bringing a grill?

LLP, hold onto your BBB's and use them at other events. Fred has ok'd us passing them out at any Appleseed. Plus, V has boxes and boxes of BBB's and Iwant him to bring them to pass out to any SB's attending the IBC. I will also bring red sweatshirts, Instructor t-shirts, Orange Hats, RW flags, RWVA hats, chamber flags, event fliers, etc. If anybody else needs anything else in particular, let me know.
Title: Re: Piru, CA IBC March 13-14, 2010
Post by: V on March 11, 2010, 08:13:00 PM
Ooops, I've been reading and handing out BBB's at any AS for ages... and yes I have boxes of 'em.

All those people looking for guidance on how to present the strikes... the bare bones facts and flow of the story is on the BBB's and doesn't take long to read or relay to someone. So if you know the story to that detail thats all that's needed as the framework on which you hang the particular personal stories needed to illustrate your points, Choice, Performance and One Person Does Make a Difference. Each time you tell the story you can use different people and vingettes to hang on the framework each time you tell it so it never gets stale for you - and therefore your listeners. The point of developing your historical knowledge in depth is so that you can do this pick and choosing to tailor your presentation to each crowd each time you do it. You don't try and cram everything you know into the story every time.

Ooops, thread hijack. Got carried away there. Reading a BBB will do that to ya. You do have one framed in your house don't you?

Cheers
Phil

BBB?  I most likely know...just an odd acronym to me
Bloody British Butchery, the headline on the reproductions of the Coffin Broadsheets which we read from and hand out to those who promise to "put under glass or display" in their homes so that "the Forty Deceased Worthies" are never forgotten...

It gives people the "Cliff Notes" of The Story which we ask them to carry forth in their Seventh Stepping... I always use it in my benedictions - unless I forget :(

Oh and by the way, kudos for asking, everyone else just PM'd me  O0

Kinda like a really not so great bond rating..... :-[ :P :-\

Bob, Roger that! I will begin handing these out @ AS's far & wide....I thought Fred was keeping our printing costs down, but this one does make a lot of sense to keep handing out.....

If anyone from the San Jose or Reno area is going to be at the IBC, can you pick up a stack of handouts/fliers for 3 days of gun show duty?  I can get the stuff from you in San Jose or Reno, and bring it to the Big Reno Gun Show April 16-18.  Also, some AQTs and Redcoats and 1 inch squares would be useful.

Thanks!

They are our Central California depot and we try and keep all the California supplies distributed amongst me and Bob in the South, BaldDragn in Central and EagleScouter in the North as we see each other at various events.

Thanks!

So in all this organizing that's going on, nearly as long as the LTR thread, must be some complicated IBC this one, has anyone replied to this request?

I think I've only had a PM from DesertDog...

&)

See, now I'm catching Layloitis  :D

I have T-shirts, handouts for packets, chamber flags, trifolds (25,000). Hopefully Bob has RW Flags, hats.

I can certainly stock you up with stuff DD but you and JS should check that you can meet somewhere without either of you having to drive miles out of your way to make it happen. UPS for a box straight to JS's place will be cheaper than combined gas nowadays.

Its easy for me either way.

LLP's "young rifle" was definitely a fun to play with.  Great folks and Great time.  Drinking from the fire hose, just like old times.  Was it only a year ago?

Freeman, if you're free and willing to travel, Sac is having a shoot this weekend.  They have 15 pre-reg as of today so it will be manageable between all the instructors with a lot of 1 on 1 time with shooters.  Great time to reinforce what you just learned.

According to the weather channel it dropped to 44 degree's Saturday night.

When I envisioned a shoot in California, I guess that I was thinking more of the Beach Boy's Endless Summer version.

Cold nights and dodging cow pie's reminded me more of my youth in Wisconsin.

Weather always seems to be a part of the Appleseed story.

I've got a picture hanging next to my "Bloody Butchery" broad sheet of an Appleseeder shooting in the winter, where he(?) had to stomp down a shooting lane in the snow to shoot at a Redcoat target from prone. I hung it there to remind me that a Rifleman persists.

Once the sun came up,the cold night was quickly forgotten.

The Rifleman's Cadence began it was all good.

It is good to see you all made it back to Nevada safely. That is a long, boring drive through the middle of no where to get there. I only have to drive 1.5 hours to get home, and I am beat when I get there. You all had a good 5-hours to get home.

Jessica,

Be kind to your self.

If you look in the mirror you will notice that you are wearing an orange hat. That means that you have demonstrated a proficiency with a rifle that puts you among the best of America's shooters. Remember  the statistics on the Red coat targets.

Secondly when you stand in front of a group of shooters, you have earned the right to be there. You know more than them. Just getting up in front of people demonstrates confidence and courage that many people don't have.

Keep smiling and keep practicing and your speech it will get easier.

Absolutely right.  On top of that, you'll have all of the other instructors to back you up if you should ever need it.  We take care of our own!

Speaking in front of people comfortably takes one of two things:  Either (a) you're a born showoff and jerk, or (b) you've had lots and lots and lots of practice.  You're not a jerk, and hardly anyone has the opportunity to get that kind of practice.  (Some of us, like me, happen to be both.  I have a totally unfair advantage in this area...  ++) )

You'll be great.  Even by Sunday you were getting it.  Don't worry about a thing.

I can tell you are not a jerk.

I am not ever comfortable speaking in front of people. I have been doing it for most of my 25 years as an engineer also. I have been to multiple classes on how to speak in front of people. It is a matter of knowing your material, that is all. There are probably few people that actually feel comfortable. It is kinda like getting into that prone position. Are you comfortable? heck no. Do you look comfortable? If you got it right you may just look comfortable.

Lower the resolution on your camera.

That will shrink the photo's size

Since most folks print 4 x 6 all they need is

2 MP = 1600 x 1200 pixels
High Quality: 4 x 6 inches, 5 x 7 inches
Acceptable Quality: 8 x 10 inches

The higher Mega pixel cameras are for large format pictures.

Experiment as ymmv.

And after all the "work" is done, the Instructors get to gather to bid farewell, and hope to work with each other at some point on the Trail.....

some of us have a bit of "fun" with each other, by bringing out "young rifles" to use as a teaching moment.....

I just call it therapy after a long, hard weekend....... ::)

Week finally slowed down so I could pull the pictures from the camera. Need to drop my Megapixels down.

Thanks to all the CA Redhats and crew for assisting. This was an amazing weekend. Fire hose of knowledge time again. Met and made some new friends too.

It was a pleasure to meet up and spend the weekend with folks who have helped me as I persisted along the Rifleman's trail. Desert Dog, Bob 210, Laylopro. And the many other folks who made the trip to Boulder City to assist in past shoots  Kool Aid, Socalserf and others. Thank you.

Already signed up for the Boulder City April 17th My first shoot as an Orange hat. Looking forward to putting my weekends training to good use.

Don't worry about a thing.

yea thanks for bearing with me up there I would have gotten tired of holding those posters up if I were you.

I hope you no one minds if I re-post some of these pictures to Facebook. I figure it might get people asking about my new friends and hobby.
