Well, send a can or two up here to NH! Aren't you MI types supposed to be watching out for us newer RHs? ::)
Man, this does kinda stink. At least they are fulfilling orders placed before they took the ammo off the ordering page. I'm glad I squeaked in before it got snatched away. Now I really regret only ordering 2 cans. Oh well, live and learn.
Guess I'll start reloading until another batch shows up...
I already got my 10 can limit back in July, but since then, i'm down to 5 cans, and looks like more will be a while...Still wishing .30-06 grew on trees.
Anybody good at brass casting?
:D
looks like I'll be slapping a .308 barrel on my garand first thing after I drive up to get it here in a couple weeks! I might bring my GF's form and membership info and get an extra rifle too, then sell it at market prices and buy ammo with the money.
An individual may buy 12 rifles per year. If you are looking for particular grades, call first to make sure that they have them available on the floor. On last week's visit to CMP South, I wound up bringing home a Springfield Service Special. This was described and certainly appears to be a correct grade rifle with a new cmp stock. The wood and metal are both pristine (no oprod wear under the barrel, no bolt wear in the receiver, all matching parts and barrel). That grade is more expensive and is not on the website.
Last week, they didn't have any standard service grade rifles. They did, however, have many, many field grade from both HRA and SA.
In terms of ammo, I think that they will get more. The question is when. Truthfully, I don't see much of a price difference between .30 and .308. You can reload to M2 specs (there are a number of people on the forums who do).
Now if I had an unlimited .308 supply...
Team,
I just got back from Anniston. The South store has ammo, by the looks of it, lots of ammo. In one flavor only. 240 round, clipped, bandoleered spam cans. It looks like CMP has stopped the mail order side of things.
Stay strong. Keep calm and carry on.
Bonden.
Anyone been up to the North Store lately, for an ammo and service grade Garand availability update? We just lined out a few guys who want to make a drive out there...if there's stuff to buy, that is.
Can't say there is ammo for sure but they did sell cases of ammo at the store that were too large/heavy to ship.
When I was there a couple of years ago they had "big" cases that weighed 95 lbs. or so and had over 1300 rounds in them (mine's not full anymore :~ so I don't remember exactly how many rounds it had before I opened it). These cases have the 20 round boxes inside rather than the clips.
Since they don't ship these cases they may still have some. You might call and ask if they still have those big cases in stock to sell at the stores.
Good luck with your trip and I hope they have what you're looking for.
cut and paste from a post on arfcom from Thursday the 1st of Oct. Looks like they may still be selling ammo at the South Store.
"I went to the CMP South store today. Met a great bunch of guys, especially the armorer Leon who took extra time to help me select a rifle.
There was a line at 6:30am this morning. Some ladies came out just after 7 and offered us guys some coffee. Doors opened at 8. Today was a special day at CMP South as they had about 90 M1 Carbines from Bavaria. Prices... I think they were about $600.00 each. After 30 minutes of being open, there was no limit on the number of Carbines that customers could buy. Most customers were getting one, a few got two. I saw one guy buy four, mostly for the stocks if I understood him correctly.
I selected a service special M1 Garand. I also picked up 10 cases of ammo. Yes, I bought HXP (240 round span cans) in person. I didn't ask about the rumors of no ammo, but I do know they didn't have any 22LR, as I hoped to get two cases (five thousand rounds). No idea when the 22LR stock will get well."
hmm, maybe they're still selling ammo to walk-ins. I'll have to call and find out. My road trip may still be a good idea for next weekend! I might end up making it to the South store instead of the North one like I'd originally planned, though. Its only an hour more from where I live. I'll call and check on the situation, and post what I find in this thread.

I was in Anniston on Friday (10/2) and picked up the last six of my ten can yearly limit. I was told it's only available there at the store and when it's gone, it's gone. There were plenty of rifles! :)

A buddy and I went to Anniston last saturday, and they still had the cases of 240 round spam cans. They come in a wooden crate that holds 2 cans. All ammo is in bandoleers on clips. We came home with a field grade garand apiece (i got an H&R with a great barrel -- under 2 bore, under 3 throat erosion) and 20 cans of HXP (we got a little worse gas mileage on the return trip)! The rifle shoots beautifully.
TRoops,
Back in the day my HS club received multiple 95 lb cases of 30-06; ea case held 4 ammo cans of 280 rds (35 x 8 rd clips), so 4 x 280 = 1080/case.
...and, speaking of torture, have 1 x H&R Garand from the $165/250 days, an M1D w. all accessories, incl. M84 scope, from 1st lottery they held, an M1903A1 Remington C stock, and 4 carbines (Winch, Rockola, Sag Gear Prime, and Qual Hdwr),
and (icing on cake) Bushmaster CMP AR15 w. CMP markings on receiver and upper...CMP used to sell .223 from Federal or Black Hills...them were the days...
Actually visited CMP headquareters when they were on Mass Ave in DC (before program was separated from Army). Hilda Warren was a great lady - helped tons of scholastic and junior teams...
Excelsior,

The CMP website is stating that they have a very large order of HXP coming in January and available for sale in Feb/Mar time frame. They expect this to last for several years. :)) :)) :))
glad i got it when i did
This is old information. CMP is full of ammo and has removed all limits on 30-06.
thanks any idea about price? ..:..
