Title: Dry firing the Lee Enfield
Post by: Francis Marion on September 15, 2009, 08:42:27 PM
A dry firing advantage of the Enfield design is the ready access to the firing pin and cocking piece.  This means you can slip a split O-ring onto the firing pin shaft to cushion the fall of the firing pin.

$0.20, you can buy a neoprene O-ring:
-inside diameter 1/4 inch,
-outside dimeter 1/2 inch,
-thickness 1/8 inch,

Cut O-ring once with a knife blade, and voila- you have a firing pin decelerator that slips easily onto and off of the firing pin shaft.
No snap caps necessary. Photos here:

Link not working!

Why the O ring? I have dry fired Enfields (two No #1 Mk III and three No #4 Mk I ) for years with nothing but a spent shell. Never broken or damaged a firing pin yet. I do gauge them once a year for wear, never an issue.

Not being picky, just curious if you have damaged a firing pin  ???

No trouble with DF on my Enfield, this is however a small but significant kindness to the mechanism that costs twenty cents and will soften the blow of the firing pin.  Especially since the parts are 100% accessable.

And for those Enfield collecters you know, this will encourage them to dry fire with good conscience that they're not damaging the rifle.  Not that I believe that DF damages Enfields, but I don't want to find out, either.

I have broken firing pins in other rifles ('89 Schmidt Rubin and K98) so propose this to ensure no damage.

Shooter can concentrate on technique only, silencing completely the "Is this bad to do?" demon.

That is a BRILLIANT idea. I so do love simple, and that is as simple as it gets. I have an O ring on my No #1 Mk III now.

Thanks!

Hi, all!

How about cutting a corner off a refrigerator magnet?
