We had Seven brave souls on Saturday, Three of whom returned on Sunday. We had one walk on on Sunday (more on that in a minute)
Red coat on Saturday: Not so good.
AQT's on Saturday: Highest score wasn't above 170
Saturday we had Myself (Kool Aid) Shoot Boss, Dano (IIT1- Now an IIT 2 and congratulation on a Progress check well done), and SoCalSerf (Red Hat- and also has the distinction of being the FIRST California rifleman made in state way back in the dark ages of 2007) in the corps of instructors present.
Congratulations to two first time appleseeders: "S" and "C", both of whom accounted for themselves very well indeed. Both Qualified Sunday afternoon. Scores of 212 and 210 using borrowed LTR's. Indeed they know very well what they are about. Both are based out of Ventura (45 minutes away from the range). I forsee a cadre of Ventura County red hats.
Also, "J" ALSO qualified with a score of 227. Three back surgeries, Knees shot to heck. Retired former Army.
As dangerous and 'old man' as I have ever met at an AS.
"Sc" showed up on sunday only, using a borrowed Mosin Negant M44. I believe his round count was somewhere in the neighborhood of 275 rounds before he called it quits. Oh, and he had to switch to Disaster Duck's M44 (tho DD wasn't there). Once again, I admire the sand of anyone who persists with that particular rifle. And then, of course, Kool Aid had to have him try out the Millenum Falcon (legendary 1 3/4 MOA M44). He shot seated stages without using stripperclips and made time 6 out of 8 times. I look forward to good things from him in future.
ASMinuteman and Grandsonofliberty rolled in Sunday at lunch and gave us a report on the Instructor Development Meeting from Fresno. Thanks for comming by guys.
So, all in all we had 3 out of 10 shooters qualify, but of the 10, 2 were one dayers.
So, 3 out of 8 gives a "Patch Rate" of 37%.
Of the 3, all took up the Orange hat, and the commitment that goes with it. Thank you, fellow americans.
Many thanks to all who attended, and all of my brother instructors who helped.
CONGRATULATIONS to S C and J on making Rifleman and WELCOME to the CA Instructor Corps.
Great job KA, Serf, and Dano.
To all who attended. Thank You for getting off the couch and going out. You did something. O0
SS
Great job KA and thanks for stepping in at short notice for me, I owe you one.
If S, C and J when they register could contact me via the Personal Message system, we can get them plugged into the Southern California group.
Look forward to meeting all of you again on the Appleseed trail.
Cheers
Phil
Great job to the instructors, shooter and new Orange Hats. With the new goals bestowed on us by Bob and Fred this weekend, we are going to need every instructor we can get O0
.
Piru Appleseed Aug 22-23
Shoot Boss Koolaide
Instructors: Calserf & Dano
Saturday 7 shooters
Sunday 3 Shooters
It was another fine day at the Piru Appleseed Range. With a total Saturday of 8 shooters 3 new and the rest returning the shooting was fast pace.
The weather was a little rainy until about noon when the sun and wind returned. The heat went to the usual temperature HOT! But the Riflemen persevere. George returned for his second Appleseed with a new 10/22 tricked out with Techsights and bolt release ready for action. It helped and he is knocking on the door of becoming a Riflemen.
John was a gentleman that has 60+ years of shooting experience, he qualified expert on the M1 and Colt 1911 in 1960 when he joined the Army. He came to the Appleseed to brush-up on his technique. John is a testament to never giving up. He shot most of Saturday in the kneeling position due to three back surgeries that leave him a little stiff, and unable to shoot prone. He still turned in fine groups in the kneeling position. John said that as the day went on he remembered hearing the same instructions being given to him in boot camp. Bob, Davin and Schad were also getting close to rifleman by the end of the day.
Saturday ended with all Shooters tired but happy. Sunday dawned with the temperature up to its usual Piru standard HOT! We started out with a warm up on the Redcoat targets and went right into AQT's, John shot Rifleman on the first AQT of the day. Scott a returning Appleseed shooter showed up with a Mosin Nagant and shot some fine groups during the course of the day.
After many AQT's lots of instruction Schad and Davin both made rifleman. It was a great Appleseed with three more Riflemen minted in the state of California!
