Title: Suggestions for 110 gr. bullet in Garand or M1A
Post by: Son of Martha on September 15, 2007, 10:27:36 PM
Like it says.  I have a bunch of carbine 110 gr. fmj I would like to use for reduced range practice in Garand and/or M1A.  Concerned about pressure curves.  The starting load for .30-06 in my manual with this weight is  51 (!) grains H4895--that is NOT gonna happen.  Looking at the 37 grain H4198 starting load, but powder is considered too slow for Garand.  Anyone successfully used carbine bullets in these rifles?

I think 4198 is faster than 4895, not slower.  IMR 4198 is what I used to use in my lightweight (45 grn.) .223 varmint loads.  Still not sure I'd use it in a 30.06.  The site below lists IMR 4320, 4064, 3031 and 4895.

This site has data for IMR and Hogdon

Nickle might know, but you also might want to check the manufacturer's loads. Each powder company puts out a separate, (and I believe)free catalog that shows their powder for every type of bullet in every standard American cartridge.

With my Hornady 150gr SPBT bullets, I loaded 43gr of H4895 as a starter, going all the way to 47gr. Apparently, according to Speer's reloading manual, the 43gr load is supposed to be a reduced load, producing results similar to that of a .30-30! I ended up choosing the 45gr, but the 43gr was very light on the shoulder.

Don't know what the pressure curve is, but used to load reduced
loads in a 03 A3.   Powder was IMR 4759 with the bullets 100gr
Hornady half jackets.   Vel. from 1800 to 2000 fps were accurate
and deadly on Jack rabbits with the standard 1 in 10 twist barrels.
Never tried it in semi auto, so may have to treat it like a straight
pull bolt should it not function the action.   Not a large difference
between the 100 and 110 gr bullets even in the carbines. ;D

I have some 110g. loaded to about 2800fps. from a savage 110. very nice varmit load but will not cycle a garand action.
I don't remember right off hand what I loaded them with, I have it in the shop.
I know the powder was either 4895 or 4198. but can't remember how much.
I think you will have to use a powder charge bigger than you may think you want because of the lighter bullet. [if you want it to cycle].

I'd go with the 4895 and start from a light load, working up until the rifle functions, then going a grain or two higher.

Pretty much what Muddogg said.

Now, you can use SLOWER powder in the M1, for reduced loads, but you have to be VERY careful to not use it for normal loads. Best done with surplus powder, as you can still end up using the same or more of it. The idea is to reduce velocity and get normal port pressure.

I'd search around over at CastBoolits.com for some insight.

I had a pretty good load that I used serveral years ago for a 30-06 bolt action using 110 grain HP and Reloader 15, but have not tried them in a gas gun.

Here is some data from Sierra (exterior ballistics not load data) for .308 cal. 110 gr. fmj, 110 gr. hp, 150 gr. fmj, and 168 gr. otm:

You may be able to find a comparable 110 gr. vs 150 gr. trajectory with this data that you can adjust your load to duplicate.  However, depending on the charge/powder combination it may or may not cycle the action.  Sounds like fun, though.  Good luck.

There isn't much data on reduced loads for 30/06 or anything else centerfire for that mater.  It was different in the "old days".

I recall that Hercluse (Allient) Unique & 2400 were favoriates for reduced 30/06 loads with velocities in the 1500 - 1800 fps sec range but I dont recall the charges.

It probabley would not cycle your action so you might want to go the H 4198 route at starting velocities.

I've never used anything less than 125 gr in 308 or 30/06.

BTW Hodgdon now has their complet reloading data on line if you havn.t found it yet, take a look here.
