Title: Seeking advice Marlin 795 drop free mags
Post by: panhead on August 17, 2009, 10:40:04 AM
Howdy

I am looking for how-to info on making the 795 factory 10 round mags drop free, if possible. On the 12 page tome about the 795, some said theirs dropped free box stock. Mine don't.

I shined up the mag well a bit with a dremel but didn't try to remove any meaningful aluminum. I basically buffed out the shiny spots in the mag well where the mags were rubbing when inserted/removed. I noted no real significant difference and didn't want to go nutso until I got feedback from more knowledgeable types. Brand new firearm  :-\

I have 3 mags with less than approx 600 rounds between them, but I don't see them "wearing in"?

This is my upcoming LTR for October. Thanks for any help.

Mine didn't either and were excessively tight.

I ended up not making them drop free but did relieve the mag well so they weren't impossible to get out. The 7 round mags did drop free from mine though so I went for a spot that the 7rds didn't feel sloppy and fed reliably and also the 10rds would come out of there without the assistance of a pair of pliers  %)

I used a set of needle files as I had one that was rounded just about right for the front radius of the mag well.

Be very careful. If at any point you don't feel comfortable or feel like you don't know what your doing PLEASE seek the advise/services of a gunsmith. That rifle is just way too good of a rifle to be brought down by a sloppy mag well... I love mine and it would kill me (Well, cost me some funds) to have to replace it because I got a little too happy with the files.  :'(

Just go slow, don't use a course grained file only the fine grain types and check constantly on the fit of the mags.

Isn't the problem more likely with the magazines than the rifles?

I would think there is much more manufacturing variance in cheap mags stamped out by the thousands rather than a machined receiver... a proud seam weld, out of square, etc.

By the way, that was a real question, not trying to be sarcastic or anything.

 ;D

I didn't think it was sarcastic at all and is a VERY good question.

I thought that too at first. Personally I like my rifles to be able to take any in spec mag and work. I bought several mags and tested them. The end result is that yes, the 7 rnd mags are a little shorter in depth and a little bit thinner along the ridge on the side but all of the 10 round mags mic'ed the same at every point. Thus ruling out just one shoddy magazine. (The big question is why the 10 rounders from multiple places are all slightly bigger than the 7 round mags...) So I had to decide what kind of mags I was going to use and make sure that all of my off the shelf brand new mags worked in it. Hence I opened the mag well up for the 10 rounders.

Good points made by all.

Personally I do not like my mags to drop free on anything but I operate differently.

For those that do.  Not knowing who makes Marlin mags and what the allowable specs are
I would buy a big batch of all sam manufacturer, Mile out the largest one

cover teh inside of teh mag housing with magic marker (or Dykem if you are a rich machinist type).
insert the mag and remove several times.

Examine the places where the magazine rubbed off teh marker.
If it is rubbed off by sloppy handling like not inserting straight ignore it.
If it is rubbed off by interfereance you can dress it down with a fine file. A couple of passes then reapply your magic marker and start over. Continue till the mag/s drop free.
