Post by: SamD on August 08, 2009, 11:59:42 AM
Well, I told Marlin about Appleseed, I want industry support for the project.  That means I need your support (action only please, talk, talk not required).

After you send your post card to Marlin, post here and say so

BTW if you post anything here other than the fact you sent Marlin a post card, I will request the mods to delete the post.
Be warned and do not get your nose out of joint if your off topic post gets deleted. :'(

To make it easier: Marlin Firearms 100 Kenna Drive North Haven CT 06473.

If you want to get fancy, you could send them a SWAT reprint, a Dillon reprint, or a flyer with the FAQs on it.

Sam, can you say a few words about what you'd like to see Marlin do, if they become 'sold' on the program?

    A special "Appleseed LTR"?

Possible discounts to AS-purchasers who buy 795s?

Some help alerting their dealers to the program, and the need to generate leads on ranges to host 200 AS next April 19th?

Maybe an AS insert in each firearm they ship?

Maybe a little "Marlin supports Appleseed" logo in a corner of each display ad?

    Any more?

Which ones are the more important?

I say support on "getting the word out about AS" is far more important than a $10 discount to purchasers who are Appleseeders.

Maybe, in return, we could do a special Appleseed for Marlin employees - surely they must have a range facility nearby(?)...

Sam,

I've spoken to the "non-profit" sales guy at Remington Arms in NC, (Marlin), he was open to giving us the non-profit discount if we were buying them for Appleseed Instructors. He actually offered that discount to the VA Instructor Cadre, when I asked if I could offer it nationwide to the Instructor Cadre he backed up a little and said he'd have to check to see if he could do that.

I'll PM you his info and some other ideas from talking with him.

FiremanEd,

Although lower prices are always nice, I am NOT looking for any of the manufacturers to do that.
What I want from them is recognition and open support for the Appleseed Project.

I would like a partnership that says, Yo MAREMCHESTEGERAGE, you sell rifles that have some of our literature in the box and we'll teach the new owners how to shoot well, and in the deal we will get them to tell other people that shooting is cool and fun and traditional to Americans, which means that more people will buy your stuff and and in the deal we will get them to tell other people that shooting is cool and fun and traditional to Americans, which means that more people will buy your stuff and and in the deal we will get them to tell other people that shooting is cool and fun and traditional to Americans, which means that more people will buy your stuff and so on and so on and .........................

That is what I want everyone to do.

From now on hardware posts will cost you.
Anyone that posts about a rifle must promise to send a card to the manufacturer.
We will either get a lot of attention from the manufacturers  or there will be a Renaissance of thought about the software side of Appleseed  ;)

For those who just recently pruchased their rifle, new; I find they usually come with some type of registration card(they say for warranty), which
I promptly dispose of in an effective matter. :~
I wonder; they're forced to look at those, right?

I wish I'd of thought of it before I used them as a contribution to global warning.
But I believe, they're even postage-paid.
One doesn't neccessarily need to fill their own personal info. in.  Purchaser:  Liberty
                                                                                  Intended use:  Appleseed
etc.:  Appleseed stuff(contact info. website, etc.)

It's a great idea, Sam!

Thanks!  Now where was that postcard thread?
I've got to send one or twho, or more.

Letter sent out this morning.  Here was my text:

Marlin Firearms
P.O. Box 1871
Madison, NC 27025

Dear Marlin Firearms:

I participate in the Appleseed Project, http://www.appleseedinfo.org.
I think the Marlin 795 is a great rifle for this and I have purchased one just for Appleseed.  Please sell an Appleseed Model with Tech Sights http://www.tech-sights.com, three spare magazines and a GI web sling and I'll recommend it to new shooters and anyone looking to improve their marksmanship with an accurate, affordable rifle that doesn't cost a fortune to shoot.

Please support Appleseed, we are supporting you.

Sincerely,

These companies would have to see that our desire would actually bring them in some cash.
If this is important to you, wouldn't it make more sense to build up LTRs for others?  If there's no market, maybe you can still help people with it, and if people really want these, don't you think the manufacturer would pick up on it?

I don't especially care about LTRs because I don't like screwing with fixing up stuff that should work when you buy it.  Business opportunity for someone?

Nothing wrong with some enterprising individual building them.
The entire object is to get the attentionof the manufacturers.

They may  not ever build an "Appleseed Special", not the point.  I just want them to know we are out here.
There are better ways for us to make use of the attention than building a few rifles but first we need to get their attention.

I prefer postcards because they have to be manually handled.  It's easy to hit delete, but you have to pick up the card, crumple it and take aim at the trash can to get rid of one. That's 4.2 seconds of contact with human flesh adn it might rub off  O0

Manufacturer will not pay any attention to postcards, emails or any other way of attempted contact by Appleseed Project participants. They might pay attention to our comment regarding quality and workmanship of their product. That goes to their quality control and reputation department.
The point is it is not worth to twinkle the production line or make special edition for very small part of the market. When AS will become big enough part of their market they will modify production lines without our postcards.
Businesses do not care about social, philosophical, political programs. Their bottom line, money, is the only concern.
This could explain Ruger's yielding to anti-2nd amendment trends. They have huge business with government orders and they will do anything to easy out their operations in the light of current and future regulations and trends.
They will not step in to promote AS about which they do not care.
Just my 2cent as many years production line manager....

I disagree. In Wisconsin non of the concrete highway pavers supported Gov Doyle because he is so liberal. He slashed the concrete highway budget by $300 million(60%). As a group (albiet smaller as 3 have since gone under) the concrete highway pavers in Wisconsin still will not support Jim Doyle.

So did Smith and Wesson. If enough people do something it works.

I received a reply from Marlin basically stating that for them to equip a 795 for Appleseed it would require a rather large order.

Still, it was nice to get a reply and get people at Marlin to know that we exist.

I think that a "rather large order" is to be expected.
When you are looking to make a profit you need to.

Did they happen to say how large?
If they want to play, that can happen.

I suspect that Appleseed has already sold a couple hundred of them.
If the price was right, I could be tempted to invest in a hundred and unload them myself.
If I had them in stock I'd have probably sold 40-50 already.

Sam D.,

No, they don't give a number but to quote Mr. Daniel Cox from the reply, "At this time we do not mane any special production models of our firearms unless we are approached with a very substantial pre order,".

Sam D., I'll be happy to forward the letter to you if you want to PM me you mailing address.

I went to Cabela's looking for a Marlin, but they were gone so I went to the Remington 597, and bought four magazines (all they had) and will go for the TSM200 sight by Tech-Sights. They didn't have any .22LR in stock (???). But I am well on my way to getting a LTR. Progress.

Good deal Earl,
Make sure the bolt never slams shut on a Chamber flag.
We had a young lady using a 597 at the El Paso shoot last week.
Every time the bolt came down on the flag it would throw the extractor off.
It's like a Sako ext. and the spring tension is the only thing that holds the extractor in place,
Whack the extractor and it pops off. You can replace it without removing the bolt but it is time consuming and a PITA.

I will have to remember that, and make sure the the shooters know to keep the bolt from closing on the flag, the bolt catches on the empty magazine, but then the magazine is removed, the safety put on the chamber flag in and if the operating handle gets pulled a bit the bolt will go forward.

I went with the Remington 597:

Dear Remington Firearms.

I participate in the Appleseed Project, just made my RWVA Instructor status,
http://www.appleseedinfo,org.

I think the 597 is a great rifle for this. I purchased mine at Cabela's sale this weekend, for $149.99, and got four magazines, and Talon Q/R Sling Swivels (1 1/4") and a GI web sling from another vendor. My TSM200 sights are on the way, too. When assembled I will have a great rifle to shoot with, thanks.  The choice of this model or the Marlin 795 was made because the 597 had a better box magazine and was flush to the rifle. My heavy Centerfire is an M1 Garand from CMP, the transfer of skills should be close to seamless, save recoil.

I recommend you sell an Appleseed Model with Tech Sights,
3 spare mags and a GI web sling and I'll recommend it (not that I won't be pushing and showing mine every Appleseed).
Please support Appleseed, we are supporting you.

Sincerely,

William Earl Dungey

Gee whiz.  They sent me a thank you letter and a Marlin sticker!  :(

The letter said that they're forwarding my request to marketing.  Sam it sounds as though you have found a path.  I'll let it go and if I get anything from them of substance I'll let you know.

The sticker is actually pretty nice though; about six inches tall....blue....with a guy on a horse....  :-\

Came in today's mail as a matter of fact.
I'll have to call them up next week and find out how many it takes to be "very substantial".

Heaven forbid that something as simple as consumer demand would make them consider such a thing.

We must work in secrecy my friends :o
We may have to take this discussion off line or at least to the PM level.  There are  contrary forces afoot my friends, aficionados of other brands, who might be overcome by a "writ of fealous jage" to find that a manufacturer would stoop so low as to speak directly with
and be responsive to the desires of customers  8).

Hi folks
  I sent a letter to Marlin, and got a reply (no sticker  :(). Although I don't specifically recall the contents of my letter, I do remember the basics of it;
That I really like their rifle (795)
How I thought it might be even better with (Tech sights, swivels, extra mags..)
And finally that they should attend an Appleseed for themselves to see what it's all about.
This was their reply; note the address they suggested for future correspondence.
See you guys around
