Title: EER Optic For An M1 Garand
Post by: Daniel on July 16, 2009, 09:34:31 PM
What type of optic/mount (Preferably an EER scope) would you all recommend for an M1 Garand?

I have a Leupold FXII Scout on my Savage Scout, and I love it.  Their lifetime warranty doesn't hurt, either.  No warranty card, no tracking of owners, just send it in if it breaks.

Mounts?  I don't know about their M1A stuff, but Ultimak makes a great mount for Ruger Minis, and they have a great reputation for all of their stuff.  I've never researched the M1A mounts, but I imagine there are many rail systems out now.

You know; it never occurred to me to put a scope on a Garand.  But you're post made me curious so I started digging around on the net and found this...http://www.rt66.com/~korteng/SmallArms/m1sight.htm.

Hey, Nickle!  If you read this I'd really like to hear what you have to say on the subject.

BTW Nickle told me did not like the idea of scouting an M1.

The forward mounted scope lets you load the M1 (no kiddin').

With a set of quick release rings it lets you quickly remove or reinstall the scope (with a good set up - scope/rings/mount it should still be zeroed when you put it back on, mine has been so far).

The scope will let you see things better at distances and under low light conditions better than your eyes alone can.

I like it! My scout scoped M1 is what I take on the road with me and to Ramseur for the field shoots (haven't shot my M1A in about 2 years now).

B9 and Old Dog -

Thanks for the posts and the Fulton Armory link.  I've gotta try this.

Darn it, I think I'm starting to obsess...

OD, I listened to your wise advise, as I have just what you describe.
It is the best solution in my eyes. No drill and tap, pop it off and irons ready to go, no check pad to shift to the left, load with no problem.

Nickle STILL does not like the it.

When one mounts an optic on a full power cartridge rifle (M1 Garand in this case) one must consider turkey necking and ballistic compensation. With the EER turkey necking is not compromised. Ballistic compensation can be achieved through dial ups on the scope or a compensated reticle.
I used a Burris 2X7 power pistol scope with their ballistiplex reticle. This reticle has stadia lines for 100 200 300 400 and 500 yards. The rifleman's quarter mile. Due to the fact that the reticle is in the second focal plane you can also get fancy and dial down the power to compensate for farther distances. Boston Tea Party goes through this in some detail with math included. An M1 Garand set-up this way is a screaming deal for a scoped self-loading 30-06 at $1000.
