It was intro'd at the SHOT Show early this year - a .22LR dedicated AR-style rifle. S&W finally put the product info on their web site:
Free State version (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=11101&storeId=10001&productId=753508&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=15702&isFirearm=Y)
Ban State version (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=11101&storeId=10001&productId=753510&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=15702&isFirearm=Y)
MSRP is $499. 16" barrel (appears free-floated), A2-style sights on an A3-style upper, with rails (galore), and either a collapsible CAR stock or a pinned CAR stock. Upper and lower are polymer.
S&W claims it has "all the standard operating features and accessory specifications of a modern-version centerfire M&P15 rifle." ... meaning it *should* have an identical manual of arms and accept the same accessories as an AR.
Might be a nice option for someone who doesn't want to spend the same amount on a dedicated .22 upper.
Has anyone seen the Colt AR .22? It is around the same price. It would be interesting to see who makes the S&W rifle as someone else makes the M&P for S&W.
I saw the colt model at a dealer last week - he had them in stock but was waiting for 10rd mags to sell them (welcome to the PR of NY)
I think it was $500 - it Just doesn't do it for me though.
He also had a .410 upper for an AR15 - I've never seen that before. If it were 20Gauge (can't see 12 Gauge fitting) I would have walked out of there with it.
If I could find a use for a .410... Still It would almost be worth it just to see the looks on the guys faces when you get showing up for Sunday Skeet with an AR15.
(Z - sorry for the kidnap)
*getting in touch with my inner cheap bastard---who's never very far from the surface, really*.....I wonder if the presence of that rifle on the market will have a tendency to bring down the prices of the dedicated .22LR uppers? <:)
A local stocking S&W dealer said this new rifle will be available in the 4th quarter of this year.
