Hello all--
I came across Appleseed a couple of weeks ago on the web and now I'm very likely going to participate in the August Fenton MI shoot. I'm really excited at the opportunity to increase my skills.
OK I have a question about my rear sight....I have an AR15 16" bbl with midlength gas system. My rear sight is a folding sight with a same plane dual aperture system. My plan was to add some type of optic at some point, so I went with something pretty simple for a B/U iron sight. Thinking about this shoot though, and out to the prescribed ranges, I realized I don"t have an elevation adjustment on this sight. While I have some experience shooting to 100 yds, I really haven't done anything requiring elevation adjustments or calculations. Currently, am zeroed in using the "improved battlesight zero".
So, should I look into changing sights? Or can I get through the shoot with this one adjusting my point of aim? Please advise, and thanks in advance!
So, the rear sight doesn't have any elevation adjustment, or anything listed for different distances?
If so, use it, and hold high or low, as needed. Your 25 meter zero will still be your 300 meter zero.
So you know, this system worked pretty well on all the M16A1's the Army used. I've used more than a few of them, and it works.
It has windage adjustment??? The front sight post has all the elevation adjustment you need for 25M...... O0
If you are looking at purchasing something else, I would recommend that you pick up a carry handle with the A2 style sights. Bang for the buck, they can not be beat and new/used ones are plentiful at gun shows, on line, etc....
fepowered & Nickle: You are both correct. The sight (Midwest Industries SPLP) has windage adjustment but no elevation.
I did sight it in using the front sight post for elevation, and it should be ready to go then.
I've got a MATECH BUIS on my issue M4 and my personal 16" AR. The issued M4 wears an ACOG for primary sighting.
Use the sight like an M16A1, holding off for elevation, and you'll be all set.

If you've got ANY zero, you're probably miles ahead of most first-time Appleseeders....
We go over Inches, Minutes and Clicks; so don't fret it.
Any sights will get you through an Appleseed and greatly improve your skills.
AFTERMATH nailed it! If you have ANY zero, you're already miles ahead.
That said, make sure your zero is with a sling and from prone at 25M, not off a bench at 100. (Matter of fact, you won't need a bench anymore, ever!) You should be just fine with the sights you have on your rifle already and don't need to change them. If anything, you'll have to make a sight correction by moving the front sight a few clicks and we'll cover all that at the event. Save your money for more ammo!
