Just rolled in from the best shoot I think i have been to so far... It's Now 1:30 AM, Monday, Pacific time.
Going to crawl to bed now... I will post the report tomorrow. With Pics.... ZZZZZZZZZZZ
OK. got some sleep, feeling better now... I am glad I had the opportunity to Shoot Boss this one. I Left SoCal early Friday morning, got to BaldDragn's place about 2 pm. First I want to thank BaldDragn and his lovely wife, Jules, for hosting all the instructors at their place for the weekend. It was excellent for the instructors being able to spend time together. Desert Dog also came up from southern Cal to Red hat. James E. came from the Bay area, Eaglescouter and his wife Laurie came down from Redding. WW2P51 and DoubleD came up from Fresno to IIT. O0
Since we were basically camping out (inside) at BD's place at the range, and far from any town, I decided to buy chicken and steaks, corn on the cob and potato salad for the instructors dinner. Cost was way less than a restaurant, and we got to "Huddle around the fire, gnawing on a bone" (see the latest Shotgun news in Freds column for an explanation on this one) **) while pinching ourselves that we GET to do Appleseed.' The BBQ was a big hit with the instructors, and we all got to know each other, which makes working together all the better. I personally want to thank my instructor crew on this shoot, they made it easy on me by being great at what they do. Thanks to Laurie for handling check in for me. You rock Laurie, thanks! And I appreciate everyone's efforts, Thanks.
Saturday morning, we had 32 Pre-reg shooters with 3 walk ons. when the dust settled, we actually had 31 shooters on the two lines. Desert Dog took the left line with 14 shooters, and the rest were on my line. Day went exceptionally smooth with no problems. End of day numbers on my line were: Greg made Rifleman with a 217 and backed it up with a 211. Way to go Greg. :~ :~ We had Eaglescouters wife, Laurie, shoot 194, Kalin 190, Christian E. 189, Nathanael 198, and Reggie 199. Pretty good for the first day.
History was amazing as usual, and we saw it being absorbed by the attendees with enthusiasm. Gave out the rifleman Patch to Greg, recognized the "knocking on the door" shooters and scores, and called it a day.
Sunday, we consolidated into 1 line with the sat onlys not there. 20 returnees with 4 walk ons Sunday. These sunday onlys were previous Appleseeders returning to shoot rifleman on the Sunday AQT grind. 24 on the line, We did a few squares, some instruction, and on with the AQT's. Gave all the instructors a chance to instruct, call the line, LSO, we had a good instructor to shooter ratio, which I think contributed to the results we achieved.
Ended the day with 8 of 25 getting the redcoat headshot, with 21 of the 24 shooters getting 3 shots in 100 yds OR BETTER. 8-100, 7-200, 2-300, 4-400. With Laurie consistently clearing the redcoat both days before and after. I was glad to see a lot of kids and women at this shoot too. The kids are our future. We need them to hear and pass on the heritage. Someone else can tell the story about Kamron's son, Reed, and the WW2 quote... If someone else doesn't, I will later, because it was AWESOME!!! :o
End of day Sunday, We had rifleman scores by Kalin-214, :~ Laurie-217, :~ Christian E.-215, :~ and Lisa-214. :~ Lisa's Husband Mike, made rifleman at a previous Appleseed, and brought Lisa back to get her rifleman score. He also shot a high 234 rifleman score himself. :~ Now we have another Rifleman couple. If any of these new riflemen can see fit to step up and take an orange hat, Appleseed would love to have them.(hint, hint) ;)
Other end of Sunday high scores were: Vince-207, Greg-204, Jesse-198, Kevin-194, Steve-192, Christian B.-183, JC-182, Nathanael-178, and Kamron-179 with his M1a. That is 14 out of 25 shooters over 180, with 5 of those as new riflemen.
I also had the pleasure of presenting the Instructors REDHAT to James E. He was a great guy to work with, and has the stuff. He will make a great shootboss someday SOON! O0
Also, WE HAD SOMEONE STEP UP AND TAKE AN ORANGE HAT!!! Greg, who shot rifleman Saturday, stepped up Sunday and gladly accepted his newfound Calling as an official Appleseed Instructor in training. Greg has a good heart, and believes in Appleseed... you can hear it when he speaks about it. He is a welcome addition to the Northern California instructor force, and will make a great Instructor. :)
Well, How awesome is that!!! My first solo Shoot Boss gig and I got to give out a red hat, and orange hat, and 5 rifleman patches!!! Pull me back down to earth, cause I am feeling pretty good about the future of America and it's citizens right now.... There is hope if we band together and promote Appleseed....
I have pictures coming, but took over 100 I have to decide which to post (don't want to overload the rwva website server)
I may just post a link to Photobucket, either way, i will post them after others comment here...
Ending it off with I think we had the best group of shooters I have had to the pleasure to meet... or is it that it just gets better for me with each shoot and seems that way? Every Appleseed is an awesome experience for me personally, and I look forward to every opportunity to meet like minded individuals and share Appleseed with them.
I will post pics soon... stay tuned.....

Congratulations on a great job of breaking in that new Green Hat, you carried it well and did Appleseed proud at Sacramento.

It just keeps getting better!
It was obvious right from the start that we had a great bunch of shooters this weekend. Our shooters were very attentive, several of them taking notes while the instruction was being given. The results speak for themselves, 20% became Riflemen, and all gave their best. They made it a pleasure to tell history by giving their full attention.
The instructor crew threw themselves into the weekend showing up early on Friday to set up, and despite my encouragement to start their long drives home ASAP, everybody stayed until the range was completely cleaned up and put away. I'm very grateful to everybody for supporting the Sacramento Appleseeds until we have a local crew to do it for ourselves.
It was my great pleasure to have a house full of the finest people this country has to offer. We had so much fun it was hard to watch everybody drive away. Jules and I both felt that the house was just to darn quite Sunday night without the crews snoring ;). If you've never had a house full of Appleseed instructors, you don't know what your missing! Jules and I are both looking forward to our next opportunity to play host, an IBC would be awesome (hint hint).
Camljr did a fantastic job as shoot boss, finding the perfect balance between exercising authority and being approachable. He's also an expert on the BBQ.
Working with Desert Dog was a pleasure, several times when I was drawing a blank he stepped in seamlessly to pick up the load until I caught up.
It was great to see James E. pick up his red hat. He's been an unsung hero in the San Francisco bay area for a while now.
Double D is the best I've seen at motivating the shooters and helping to keep their spirits up during the AQT grind, and I just about fell over laughing when I found him sleeping under the kitchen table Sunday morning.
WW2 P51 is a natural at calling the line and wears the mantle of authority very well.
Eaglescouter did a great job of raising the bar for technical precision, giving us all a great bench mark to shoot for.
Laurie was indispensable at the admin table, perfectly getting our shooters started off on the right foot.
And Jules took good care of us all making sure everybody was comfortable as possible for the weekend..
As for me, I just love telling stories.
Jules and I both marveled at how well everybody on this crew worked together, each bringing their unique talents, to make the sum so much greater than the parts.
Quote - (during Friday BBQ dinner) "Saving America is good work if you can get it!"
each bringing their unique talents, to make the sum so much greater than the parts.
Boy howdy, does that sum up a group of Appleseed instructors, or what?? <:) O0 <:)
You guys did real good, lots of great news in here......lemme see if I have this right....
Good History presentation
1 Red Hat
1 Orange Hat
5 Riflemen
no safety issues
This sounds like a truly stellar event to me!! Awesome job, guys!!
I think you folks are right.....an IBC, a few more shoots & red hats, and the training wheels will be off, and you folks will be rocking the North end of Cali all by your own bad selves...... O0 :~ 8)
Building up more RM, and instructors that will start looking around, thinking: "Where will we go next?"
Hmmmmmmmm......now -there- is a thought, eh? >:D ^-^ @@)
And the rest of the country used to laugh at us...... **) &) **)
Great job guys!! YOU ROCK!!
LLP
Thanks go out to the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center for the use of their excellent facility. And, of course, thanks to BaldDragn and Jules for their very warm and generous hospitality.
You always know that's it going to be a good Appleseed when folks arrive in groups. Parents, kids, grandparents, husbands and wives, brothers, groups of friends. But there was something more going on, a kind of Appleseed Zen, where everything just kind of came together. No doubt that some of it resulted from the opportunity for most of the instructor crew to gather Friday. I would guess that most of you shooters didn't know that not all of the instructors had ever met each other before. Anyway, we ought to make sure to have bratwurst and kimchee before every shoot.
It's the young Americans that I most enjoy working with at an Appleseed. Camljr made a reference to a Reagan quote, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction", and it's true. I can tell you that there is hope. Twelve year old Reed, knew the Yamamoto quote about a rifle behind every blade of grass, and shared it with the other shooters during the Sunday benediction. Also, best line overheard during the day was when we were hurrying folks along to prep a mag or staple a target, one young man asked, "Do you think we're robots?"
Greg, congratulations on making your rifleman score, and stepping up to become an IIT. I guarantee you will have even more fun at your next Appleseed. Congrats also to the other riflemen, Lisa, Laurie, Christian, and Kalin. Persistence pays off!
James E
Hi All.... yes, big thanks for all the hard work of the Instructors. Although we were "one day-ers", we got everything we needed to practice and practice correctly. Not the best on the line, but we got better through the day! (Am a minister, teach Bible on Sundays, so makes it a bit tough....).
Just for yucks, and a bit of "light" reading for you... Here is Jesse's 10th grade research paper, "The Defense of All Free Nations".
Yes, bullets are good, but words can accomplish much!
Thanks again for all your hard work...

I want to thank everyone who made the Saturday event the most fun i have had in along time.
Sorry i couldn't break 210, i am going to sign up for the Aug event and be out there Sunday morning to take care of business. If i knew it would be that much fun i would have made better arrangements.
I will be practicing for Aug, i like to teach, and shoot. And i like the way the Appleseed crew brings a good message to those who listen and take note. And i definitely can use some help getting better at my part. So if i can get everything aligned and the 6 steps don't fail me, I'll bust that Rifleman barrier and will definitely be humbly asking for the privilege to don an Orange hat to help out at the 4 or 5 other upcoming bay area events.
For inspiration i have hung my AQT's on the closet door so i can study them and evaluate what i could do different.
Till Aug.
Reggie
Another great shoot under the belt. :~ I have to agree with BaldDrgn, "It just keeps getting better." :)
We couldn't have asked for better weather. It was a great relief after the fresno shoot 2 weeks prior.
All of the shooters I encountered had a great teachable attitude. It was amazing to see how the line looked right after demonstrating the SHF of the prone position, and proper sling use. I think the best part was watching everyone improve throughout the weekend.
Working with the other instructors was a real treat and thanks to BladDrgn for having the motley crew over. I think Camljr should get a Chef hat to go along with the green one, he can grill my steak anytime.
Can't wait to instruct another shoot. Looking forward to sitting around a campfire and gnawing on a bone with my fellow appleseed volunteers. O0
Great times with great people!!
I agree with Cam that this shoot was hard to beat. This group of shooters absorbed the instruction like I've never seen.
The BBQ and sleeping at BaldDragn's home on the range was the best accomadations we could ask for. BD and Jules were incredible hosts. If you didn't take the time to read "Rules of This House" on the wall, you missed out!! Great commardarie O0. The NorCal team has the foundation to take CA to the next level and beyond.
Congrats to JamesE for getting his Red Hat! You have Appleseed coming out of your pores and are a great asset to the program. P51, DoubleD, BaldDragn and eaglescouter are next for the Red Hat.
Kalin was shooting rifleman groups, but equipment issues kept his groups of target. He took P51's 10-22 and shot 214 on the last AQT of the shoot ;D. Reed quoting Yamamoto at the end was the best moment of the weekend.
I've said before and it remains true. Kids I meet at Appleseeds are the most well behaved, least whining kids I meet. They restore my faith in the next generation.
PICS... AS PROMISED.....

Mark,
You should be proud of Jesse for more than a few reasons, but that paper he wrote is amazing. He did great research and laid out the case very well. It was so well written... I hope he doesn't mind if I use some quotes from his report at future appleseeds... Let me know, I would love to share it with other like minded appleseeders.
See you both at the next appleseed, hopefully in August.
For the shooters that attended the Sac Appleseed (or any Appleseed for that matter) and want to get in a little more time on the line to get ready for August, give me some advanced notice and I'll see if I can set it up.
It won't be an Appleseed but it will give us all a chance to practice.

Reggie,
You will make it next appleseed... you were putting the instruction to good use, and high scored a 199. Right there... I believe if you came back Sunday, you would have made Rifleman. Just get into the positions at home to stretch those muscles, and dry fire at home.
I am glad you will be back in August to follow up on your instruction, as I will be there to see you make rifleman. AND take on the orange hat!!! You have the fire in you and will make a great instructor. I am looking forward to seeing you achieve that for yourself, and future appleseed attendees. We welcome your enthusiasm for the program, and i am sure you will be an asset to the program.
Remember, it is OK to bring your friends to an appleseed to have them share in the heritage, and see you making rifleman and stepping up...
See you at the August Appleseed....
Hi All,
This is Eaglescouter's wife....oh yeah and FINALLY, FINALLY a rifle(wo)man!!!!
Just wanted to say that this was the BEST Appleseed I have been to. The instructors, the other participants, the weather....everything...
Oh yeah...can't forget the best hospitality and the most awesome steaks.
Have set my goals for upcoming Appleseeds.....and yes camljr, and dex and bd they do include the (gulp :o) orange hat.

Way to go NorCal!
I am so glad you made it, Laurie!! you were working hard at it and finally got there.
I was happy to be a part of it. I am sure we can get you an Orange hat.
Maybe I will hand down my old orange hat to you, since It happened when I was shoot bossing.
Don't worry, I will wash it first!! or you can have a new one, your choice.
CONGRATS!! ANOTHER CALIFORNIA RIFLEMAN!!! AND FUTURE INSTRUCTOR!!!
Well, I still want to try to get the rifleman score with the tech sites. And that darn 4th red coat is calling my name...was sooooooooooo close. But I also want to take my time with the orange hat and go one step at a time and get it right before I move on.
Eaglescouter and I talked abt it and my way of thinking is if we get an Appleseed up our way any and all help will be needed so here I go....
By the way, I don't mind handling check in at all. Frees up the rest to do what they need to do. So you can put my name down for that next Sacramento in August.
I'll take a new orange hat....Keep your orange one to show how far you've come....Shoot Boss....I'll take the advice and encouragement from your experience with the orange hat.
NorCal22Gal
Thanks for taking care of Double D while I was away playing. ;D
NorCal22Gal -- congrats on the Rifleman score, I knew you could do it. I wish I could have been there to see you do it but I was done at the RBC in Piru. For any of you thinking about taking the orange hat or if you already have look in to getting an IBC up there (they like to have about 4-6 people lined up ahead of time), or go to an RBC (there is one in Fresno in Aug and another later in the year in Piru). It is well worth the time and effort and will make you a much better instructor and shooter.
I look forward to seeing many of you on the Appleseed trail.
Thanks, would have been great to see you there as well.
Oh yeah congrats on the new hat color.....
