Title: Jackson, WY June 13-14 (aka Camp Mildew)
Post by: hawkhavn on June 14, 2009, 12:57:22 AM
First night report from NW Wyoming.  18 shooters on the line today, 2 ladies, 3 juniors.
Great first day, very teachable group, 2 AQTs in, no 210s yet, but we are getting there.
Tomorrow we split into two bays, onr for CF out to 400 yards and the pistol bay will have the .22's.

Evidently Wyoming is seeing the most precip in 15-10 years and today was no exception storms rolling through all day, but the folks here just plowed on.

More tomorrow.

Well, another fine WY Appleseed is in the history book.  18 shooters back today, 5 new Riflemen, one of those at the KD range!
Rain held off all day, somebody else can pop in here with more details...

p.s. Congratulations to our newest Red Hat, Brokensling was accorded these honors by SB Risky Buisness!

Second day: Jackson Wyo (AKA camp mildew) All of our shooters returned, most wearing snorkles and flipers, regulation swimwear was out as the temps were low, moisture content in the air was high (that actually means rain) most of the morning. The day was iffy, but the shooting was not. One "unofficial" CAQT scored 244 with several more 210 plus showing up with great frequency. Final tally: 5 Riflemen were made and one previous patch winner also scored a Riflemens rating at the full distance AQT for around 30% success ratio overall. Another milestone was recorded as Broken sling was promoted to Instructor and turned over his orange hat to another IIT for safe keeping untill his turn comes around. We also managed to convert some .22 shooters to the M1 school of thought with the adept usage of key phrases such as "ya want to shoot it? yea, you want to shoot it",get's em every time. Several bolt gunners were hot and recieved the coveted award and a somewhat perplexing array of rifles were in use both days for our IITs experience.
The stats:
Weather-ICKY, improved to YUCK.
Range- outstanding
Ages attending 14-65
Favorite rifle, 1022 Ruger, mostly stock, 1 LTR, 1 equiped with Palma sights (too cool)
next fav, Robinson XCR
Next fav, breaks out, 1 Remington nylon 66, 1 blaser bolt .223, 1 Rem 541, 1 Ruger 7722, 1 Anschutz biathalon rifle, 1 AR15, 1 Ar10,
Many THANKS to the Hoosier contingent--Hawkhavn, Brokensling, and .5 (who I think is our youngest IIT) for the great preformance and new take on several topics. Hawk I owe ya, and can't wait to get out to Indiana to do a shoot with you folks--- risky

3600 miles later (including sight seeing).  Just back home today.  This was a great group of people.  I enjoyed working with the instructors and more importantly, the students.  Everyone endured the weather and was open to learning.  Strangest part of the shoot is where two of the shooters knew who I was but I was at a loss.  Until they explained that they were friends with the property owner for the Lafayette shoots.

Pictures to be posted soon.... I did just get home.

RB, will try my best to come out west and work with you again.

the consensus among the oldtimers I know is that this is the wettest june ever in this part of wyoming. I shot an 800 match yesterday in rexburg where we had to clear three foot high weeds from the berms before we could shoot.
- on the rapid fire strings: students were asked to load two and eight. we had people who had five round mags, and I assume that it would be okay to load five and five. some folks were confused about this.
- 10/22: this is the first time I've seen a lot of these at an appleseed. I know they're cheap and available, but I got to see the drawbacks: short stock, slick buttplate, very light barrel, poor (for appleseed purposes) rear sight, less than ideal sling setup. I know that they can be adapted, but I would steer people to the option I use: 10/22 target model. It has a longer, fuller stock, rubber buttplate, heavy barrel, and sling points that are more useful for appleseed. It is set up for a scope, no front sight. students can scope it, or mount a tech sight on the rear (they need to do this anyway with the regular 10/22), and get a barrel band for the front (from brownell's) and mount a cheap airgun or smallbore aperture with a post on the front.
I brought mine, which has bases for the target sights from my thousand yard competition rifle. I use it for short range practice. people liked it, and it made a big difference for folks who needed a longer stock.
the target model runs 50/60% more than the standard rifle.
the trigger is no better on the target model. I'm sure everyone knows that there are multiple options to improve the 10/22 trigger. my solution was a 20 minute trigger job on the stock trigger. those who used it found it made a big difference to their shooting.
