Title: Davilla June 6-7 AAR
Post by: metalbot on June 07, 2009, 09:30:13 PM
Wow.  This was my first hot Appleseed in Davilla, and my first time shoot bossing there.  Normally my Davilla Appleseeds are characterized by two of the following:  (A) excessive rain, (B) high winds, or (C) cold temperatures.  We had none of the above.

Instructors on the line included myself, LabRat, Aromatic, Scout, and Big D.

On Saturday, we had 26 shooters on the line.  Several shooters were brand new to rifles, and were shooting on loaner LTR's.  Despite a wide range of experience levels, we managed to get an AQT in by the end of Saturday, and we managed to produce 1 rifleman, with several others chasing closely.

On Sunday, we had 17 shooters on the line, though several sat out during the afternoon due to excessive heat.  Sunday was spent primarily working the AQT's, and we produced 2 additional riflemen.

At the end of the weekend, TexasRifleman (who had shot Rifleman at the other Texas DAR earlier this year) donned an orange hat.  I look forward to working with him on future shoots.

Thanks for all your help on the line throughout the day on saturday (same to all the other instructors).  It was great fun learning to shoot prone, sitting, and getting pointers on my standing technique.  Great to hear you guys made 2 more riflemen on sunday.  I was thoroughly impressed with the whole event but it's been a long time since I slept as well as I did on saturday night.  Wish I could've said thanks in person but scout was giving you guys quite the extended debrief  &)
Great job though, I hope to stay for 2 days next time.

LOL, yeah, ain't that the truth. Last time ya needed a canoe to get to the line.

Now all we need is some snow. Yeah, that's the ticket. Snow in July. Just more proof of global warming. Get yer carbon credits while they're hot. heh.

It was good to see all y'all out there. See ya next time.

Yep it was a might toasty to say the least. Seemed like my heart rate was up due to the heat and I could actually see it in the AR's peep sights. The heat sure made mental focus important and I slipped several times, mainly sending the wrong amount of shots into the wrong section of the AQT. Like Scout says, this is the kind of training you can't pay good money for. Found out how I, my Rifle and my ammo performed under the HOT Texas sun with wind and a little dust and dirt in/on the Rifle. The Rifle ran like a champ, only hiccups was me not fully inserting the mag all the way a couple times. The ammo ran flawlessly (reloads) but I found out some things about myself under that HOT sun. It is harder to shoot 4MOA when you are that hot. Guess I need to work on that Rifleman's Bubble Deal.
A special thanks to Scout for all he does and letting us use/camp his place. And Thank You to all the instructors that helped. Aromatic finally got thru to me about trigger release and follow-up.
Look forward to many more and to getting my chance to help people re-learn their heritage and to learn to shoot.

P.S.
I has no camera this trip so no pictures to post.

Thank you all!  Instructors, fellow Appleseeders and Robert, who dropped by Sunday afternoon and helped me past my plateau by encouraging me to try a higher arm position on my sling...you all are an asset to this country!

I will do up a proper AAR and probably will post it for Riflewomans benefit in her womens thread, so be sure to look there!

Vic303 earned her Rifleman patch on Sunday on her third AQT.  Her first two AQT's were close as well.  Students like her make teaching easy!

Well done!  I'm looking forward to convincing you to don an orange hat sooner than you think.   :)

Rightnow, my goal (besides sending my husband in Nov), I plan to work on promoting the program to a bunch of folks I know locally.  I am also going to see if I can get my nephew to go to one in GA/AL if he can.  I think he would really enjoy it.

My 1st Appleseed event was on 4/19/09, so this was my 2nd Appleseed event and I was able to qualify on saturday.  I almost qualified the 1st time, but my rifle kept mis-firing.  I've discovered that it will work flawlessly from the time I clean it till I get about 250 rounds thru it, and then it needs cleaning again.  Thank you to all the instructors for helping me.  I've been shooting a fair amount for the last 3-4 years, but I've been struggling a lot trying to get my groups sizes down and more consistant.  You've made a big impact on me, and given me a lot to work on.  I can't wait till I can come again.

Thanks to everyone for a great event. First off thanks to all the atendees who decided to do something about their rifle marksmanship, learn about their nation and hopefully change their lives. ;)  Getting off the couch to attend an event is a huge first step.

In addition thanks go to the SB, Metalbot for another tight professional event. Marc is a shining star in the Texas Crew, and he turns in a top notch event at every show. Big D was also here an he is one of the most loyal instructors we have attending almost evert Texas event at Davilla since we started several years ago. He is always here and always ready to do anything asked of him to insure the success of every event-Thanks Dave!

Labrat turned in another great job of instructing and his history is getting better everytime he tells it. I love listening to him tell his strike stories.

We had several new  folks helping out at the event, Nick and Steve and a new IIT that happened to be in the area on Sunday and also stopped in to help with instruction Sunday afternoon. Thanks to all of these guys for taking on the responsibilities of becoming a new instructor and helping others to find out what it means to be a rifleman.

We had a slew of brand new shooters including a large percentage of young children and women. So the line went slow on Saturday but they all showed huge improvrment. We made 4 riflemen and many will turn over 210 at their next event.

Yes, it was hot. Quite a few bright red faces and necks on Saturday and some glowing blisters on necks on Sunday. Remember sunscreen now that summer is here. ;)

For the folks who join the forum after this event, PM me to let me know you are here and what your name is and we just might let you put your shoulder to the whell with the rest of the family. God bless all who attended and I look forward to seing you all again here.
