Title: GIBSONBURG 23/24 MAY 2009
Post by: redman1 on May 25, 2009, 12:39:32 PM
I have to say, another fine group of appleseeders. We molded 2 rifleman the first day, even though it was very hot.Plenty of instructors at this historic event,so that gave us instructors some one on one time with the cooks..The instructors and students all seem to jell quite well, and the appleseed ran like a well oiled  machine..

day 2 i didnt keep count of how many rifleman we turned out,but the numbers were very good..We had alot of improvements from day 1 to day 2..One young lady of 13 could hardly hit the paper on saturday went from a score of like 89 i believe on sunday to around 130 by the end of the day, she came runnin up to me with a smile only appleseed can bring and told me about her score..Let me tell you that made me more happy then anyone could truely see, being the redman i dont express much emotion, but i was touched.I helped change one more life..

Thanks to all the instructors and IITs i had a very good time and i hope to see you on the line..

What a shoot! Perfect weather, great shooters, lots of instruction, and super safe. Maybe when my cmp ammo runs out I'll have to drive down again. 4 Riflemen and plenty knocking on the door. Hope to see all of you down the Appleseed trail.

Thanks to one and all, Instructor and Student alike, for doing your part in making this one of the smoothest running Appleseeds I've seen.  95% of the credit for that goes to the shooters.  They just must be smarter in NW Ohio. :)   Each of them took instruction well, understood the courses of fire immediately, and went to work to get the job done.

Quote from: redman1One young lady of 13 could hardly hit the paper on saturday went from a score of like 89 i believe on sunday to around 130 by the end of the day

I could be wrong, but I think Joy's improvement was even more impressive than that.  I remember seeing her first AQT that had about four holes in it for a grand total score of "3".  Her highest AQT score on Sunday was 170-something.   She had perfect form and could implement the Six Steps well.  Very impressive for someone 13 years old.  Her maturity far surpasses her age.  I thanked her family for bringing her and made her older brothers promise to regularly take her to the range so she can show them up. :)

Thanks to the Instructor Corps and for the excellent job each and every one of them performed.  We had folks driving in from every corner of Ohio, as well as AhhShoot and Trisha coming all the way from Wisconsin, and Guy coming from Illinois.  Ohio is much better for your efforts and I can't wait to work with each of you again.  Thank you for your patience in helping me cut my teeth as Shoot Boss in Training.

We discovered four Riflemen amongst us.  Men and Women who know very well what they are about.  Welcome.  Several others are knocking on the door as I saw quite a few scores of 200.

The history, as we know, is why the Appleseed program is what it is.  Trisha's telling of the events in Concord and the brave acts of Isaac Davis were very moving.  I hope to work with her again so I can get pointers on how to tell the other Two Strikes of the match.  O0

I've heard Guy talk about April 19, 1775 quite a few times now.  As a student twice, as an Instructor, even as a friend over the phone.  His delivery and personal touch never fail to affect me.  I know the students in Gibsonburg felt the same way.

Overall,

A safe shoot,

Skilled shooters, and

Most fun I've had at any Appleseed yet.  From the range to around a Euchre game in the hotel...  I don't know the last time I've laughed that much in 48 hours.

Appleseed.  You can't help but love it.

Heh, you got that right, MeanStreaker!

Seriously, yes, this was an excellent weekend from every point of view. The smooth operations you cite are to the credit of a very cohesive, alert, and cordial group of students, with superb instruction and leadership from you instructors. And I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that the heritage element really came alive; movingly told and woven into the marksmanship element brilliantly.

I'm pleased to be a member of the club which hosted this event, proud of our excellent facility. (To any of the club leadership who may read this thread: *Thank You*!) I only regret that you overnighters had to go off campus. But, I've heard talk that the club is planning on setting up some camping facilities. If we do, then we'll be ready for even more outstanding Appleseed events!

This is third of these I've been to. Still haven't made Rifleman but I'm one of those cited as "knocking at the door" --- consistently able to shoot in the 180-200 range. Potentially frustrating but then I remind myself that I only (re)started shooting a year ago. Determined to continue improving, and determined to do what I can to help this magnificent program.

It's Posterboy who makes these Gibsonburg shoots happen. His marksmanship, dedication, and intelligence are inspiring to me. Thanks, Bro'!

-G.

Hey FM, it was a pleasure meeting you this weekend.

You have a beautiful facility.  It's a shame that line wasn't full.  We could fit 100 Appleseeders in there!  :)

I'm going to do my best to help promote it as much as I can from 3 hours away, but maybe you can help out posterboy with some local promotions?  He certainly could use a hand!

If you choose to accept this mission :) , get with him and you you guys can feel free to PM me if I can help in any way.

What a weekend! I had such a great time instructing everyone, and I absolutely loved all the smiles I saw this weekend. There seemed to be a lot of first time AS shooters, so seeing all of you strive to become a Rifleman and learn some history along the way is really encouraging. This shoot definitely reaffirmed my love for this program, so thank you to everyone, instructors and shooters. I do hope to see all of you again down on the Appleseed trail!

This club was very beautiful and I can't wait to see it growing. There is plenty of room for a lot more shooters on the line, so everyone help get the word out and get AS growing even more!

Once again I had a great time instructing and I had a great time getting to know so many of the shooters there.

Thanks to Sandusky Co Sportsman's Club for hosting this event and Posterboy for his BOTG preparation and work that made it possible.  I really enjoyed meeting and working with new AS instructors as well as the instructors I met previously at this AS.  The 300 yard bonus after the target line setup on Friday evening was great.

Congrats to the four Riflemen qualified at Gibsonburg, OH May 23-24, 2009

Joe Culek  - Sat Rifleman 226 - on the first AQT of the day!  (and repeated on Sunday)
Mary B. - Sat Rifleman 211 - on the second AQT of the day
Eric B. - Sun Rifleman 210
Dan Holcomb - Sun Rifleman 212

Meanstreaker showed us he is ready to be Shoot Boss for the first AS at Miamisburg next weekend.  Great job.

Great group of shooters drinking water from the firehose of Appleseed Project this weekend.  I'll try to get some pictures of the happy Riflemen after I post this.

Great group of shooters ! It was a pleasure to meet you all.

4 riflemen -2 days. Pay attention GBurg is a hot spot ! In all honesty we should have had 3 more. I know that FuzzyMath, T-Rex and his buddy Cason ( I dub thee Shrek )were all seriously close in the 200's but just hit the wall after a loooong ,fun weekend of shooting. Improvement was seen all along the line regardless of scores and that is the bottom line. MeanStreaker and the Guy ran a smooth operation.Trisha and Guy gave great history. Another flawless appleseed in Ohio.

My only complaint? Wish there were more of you ! Seriously if you had fun please tell someone or better yet bring someone to an appleseed. Gibsonburg is a GREAT range and seems to produce alot of riflemen. If you live close come next time bring someone and spread the word. We have room for 100!!!!!. Thanks to Jr., peacemaker ( congrats on donning the orange hat !) and the young Marine who showed up again from april ...I'm sorry I forgot your name !

Skyscraper....feel free to pm me if you want to get together and thanks for the materials.

hope to see you all out on the trail sometime or better yet back at GBurg !

Hey MS, we have one already in place at Stinson. Why don't you cruise out sometime, and we can test it out as a new method of Rifleman "initiation". Dang, now you gave me a new "idea"!  ;D

BTW, great job out there! Nice crop of new Rifleman.

Machine, has someone not told you about those that "make Rifleman" (exaggerated air quotes)  8) with an exact 210?

They get a dunk!

Thank you to all the instructors at Gibsonburg this weekend--Mary and I had a lot of fun this weekend and we learned quite a bit to boot. ;) A special note of thanks to Tricia for adding 13 points to my sitting scores with her coaching and to PosterBoy for hosting the Appleseed, selling slings and his quick sight adjustments on the FAL's. I will be following up with Funfaler in regards to the front sight dimensions.

I now understand why many people on the forum recommend going to an Appleseed that Guy attends... very thought provoking. Mary and I both have added a few more books to our "must read soon" list. We are going to try to help BeFree set up more Appleseeds here in Michigan, but we had so much fun at Gibsonburg, we want to come back down and do some more shooting--especially once the 500 yard range is up and running. ;)

I do not know if this is the appropriate place to post this, but here goes:

Suggestions for improvement:
1.   No cell phones on the line--especially when the instructors are going over range commands.
2.   On day 2, give people a little time in between AQT's to analyze their targets. We were given the "Shot Group Analysis" page but I didn't see a single shooter analyze the targets using the page. I think this might have helped shooters self-diagnose some of their issues and could also be used as another coaching experience similar to the ball and dummy drill. Because we continued to shoot AQT's quickly, I shot another 210 and later a 218, but did not realize it until Monday when I reviewed my targets. (So does my 218 mean I get to throw Guy in the tank next time I see him? {grin} Actually, I hope to be able to buy Guy and the rest of the instructors a drink of their choice next time I see them at future Appleseeds...)
3.    The original flyer stated that we would be shooting to 500 yards, so we brought equal amounts of .22 and .308. If we had known that the longer ranges were not going to be used, we would have brought more .22 ammo for the weekend.

Accolades:
1.   Outstanding student to instructor ratio with truly excellent coaching being given. Instructors were always very polite and knowledgeable without being obnoxious or over bearing.
2.   A very safe range with good muzzle awareness and safety at all times.
3.   Where else can you hear about our heritage and understand just how far we have fallen as riflemen and patriots and at the same time extend the opportunity to turn things around? It is not often that a group of people will be quiet for long, but when Guy and Tricia spoke you could hear a pin drop under that roof.
4.   Despite the heat, sun and hard work, people were smiling and having fun--with lots of new friends. Thanks again to all of you... Meanstreaker you did a great job and you deserve to be the shoot boss in Miamisburg.

Erik "the Wet One"

.... Oh yeah! Here are a couple of pictures of our instructors hard at work and the boss tell those boys how it is going to be!

Absolutely.  We all learn from each other, Instructors and students alike.  Thank you for your thoughts.

Quote2.   On day 2, give people a little time in between AQT's to analyze their targets.

Unfortunately, this is a tough nut to crack.  Since we're trying to cram a week's worth of marksmanship material into mere hours, we like to really grind out the AQTs on Sunday to give folks as many chances as possible to earn that patch.  Plus, sometimes that faster paced grind can help folks clear their mind a bit and just drop down to shoot.

I definitely appreciate the feedback.  Thank you.

Looking forward to seeing you and Mary again!

It was a great weekend, my thanks to the instructors for making it possible.

I enjoyed it and my Marine friend enjoyed it. We both found it to be very useful and worthwhile.

We'll try to make it to several of the next Ohio appleseeds, depending on our schedules.

I scored sharpshooter this time, next time I'll be aiming (no pun intended, well maybe some) for expert.

Fullauto01

Hey Thanks for coming on down and we'd be more than happy to have you back. As for the 500 yrd range I apologize. It will be ready next week. the club thought it would be done but they are still coming up with safety rules for the range. I will check with the club and see what we can do. I do know that they want to shut all ranges down if the 500 is hot for safety concerns. These types of things we'll have to figure out for the next time such as perhaps shooting Sunday morning when the range is likely to be empty and we won't deny someone who drove a half hour to shoot his pistol. It's a balance between keeping the club available for the members and still having a scheduled shoot such as appleseed. There is a scheduled shoot basically every weekend from cowboy to .22 silhouette some close the range completely for a period. The SCSC has over 600 members but as you could see there weren't a whole lot shooting there even on a perfect holiday weekend. we need to change this ! they should all come to  the appleseed right? I am very thankful that the club gave us 5 dates and hopefully they'll give us more next year.Rest assured we'll get this all figured out by July. In the meantime my offer stands ..when we can get together come on down and we'll shoot on that bad boy before the next appleseed just pop me a PM.

congrats to both of you !

So when are we getting the redman1 IIT boonies? That's exactly the type of hat we need to have as "AI" (Appleseed Issue) and it should also come in Red and Green. Posterboy's T-shirt is pretty cool too!

Good to see familiar faces in familiar places. A great event, no doubt. I'll see you guys in July.

Wow... this board is pretty active. Turn my back for a moment and there are half a dozen responses. Thanks for the welcome, Meanstreaker, and yeah, no surprise that there is a method behind the madness in regards to training. :) PB, thanks for the invite and you can bet we will take you up on it. You certainly haven't seen the last of us. :) Gibsonburg is almost as close for as Fenton for those on the southwest side of Detroit, so we will do what we can to drum up more shooters for you from this area. We have some SASS shooters in the area that might already be familiar with your range-- if not we will make sure they know you do that down there, too. Thanks for posting the pics guys-- hopefully our instructor package shows up soon so we can post some targets up and see if we can sucker encourage some other people into going to AS. ;)

I can"t think of a better way to make my first post than to re-cap on what was a great Memorial Day weekend spent at the G-Burg Appleseed.  Thanks to everyone who attended for another one of life's truly sweet moments.  Congratulations to our new riflemen and a word of encouragement for those who didn't get to that elusive 210 . . . the only time you fail is when you quit trying.  So come again and encourage a new person to come with you.  I attended the previous Appleseed in April with my two son's.  One made rifleman and the other was close. My son who has yet to make it tried again during this event and still didn't quite get there.  As we returned home Sunday he commented that he knows he has learned the basic skills.  He just needs to keep practicing and trying.  I know he'll make it.  Special thanks to Posterboy for the invite and encouragement to orange hat at this event.  The Appleseed Project is certainly the type of program I support whole heartedly and am proud to be a part of.  What a great country we live in.

Seeing a man out with both of his sons, carrying on an age-old tradition, and personally taking the time to ensure his posterity is going in the right direction - that's truly what Appleseed is all about. We're blessed to have you, peacemaker.

And I believe Jr. will be right there with you soon. I'm glad to hear he knows what he has to do to get that patch. But the patch is just a stepping stone. He's already a man who knows well what he's about, patch or not. I'll be glad to see him in an orange hat soon too.

Wowzerz...what a weekend!  I absolutely had the time of my life--what an excellent way to spend quality time with the family AND the firearms.  I'm enthusiastically greatful to everyone, all the way up to this legendary Fred, who made the attached picture possible!

Thanks again to all the instructors who took extra-good care of my little sister, especially Point-Five.  Good work!

Gibsonburg locals, it was a pleasure to shoot at your club--what a range!  Historians--you laid it down like I like it:  history with real, live people and real, live tactical considerations.  You have provided so much fodder for thought and conversation this past week.  Thanks for making it happen.

Instructors thanks for bringing the competence, professinalism, good cheer and knowledge, especially Trish ("Finger! Thumb! Finger! Thumb!") and Joe -- thanks for making that rifleman badge happen.  Words cannot express how happy that made me.

I can't imagine a better group of people to hang out at the range with!  Thanks again, and God bless!

safari ndefu, it was great working with you this weekend and by the end of sunday I didn't need to say, "thumb, finger, thumb, finger!" because you finally fixed that. If it makes you feel better I was saying that to a lot of women at the women's AS too. You worked very hard that weekend, so congratulations on earning that Rifleman's patch. I hope to see you again on the AS trail, and maybe you will be wearing one of those orange hats...

Hey safari.  Welcome to the forums.

I'm going to hold you to the promise you and your family made to me to regularly take your sis to the range.  That young lady can shoot!!! :)

Definitely, and definitely.

I was looking at the big map o' Appleseeds, and what do you know I live in that vast empty space that is Western New York.  Not an Appleseed within three hours!  So how do we start putting one together?

Yes, Western NY needs a shoot this year. Do you have a local range in mind? I will send you a PM with a lead to follow up on.

Looks like you guys had a great shoot and the pictures are cool.

MeanStreaker, are you and kDan related somehow?
