It was a picture perfect September weekend for a Project Appleseed rifle clinic at the Nappanee Conservation Club. We had 9 attendees, with 8 of those being returning Appleseed participants.
Our IIT Crew of Tinman, and PICASSO, gave our shooters the Points of Instruction and coaching that our shooters needed while new Blue Hat "Ducky" handled the admin duties and learned on the job how to try to keep the Shoot Boss on time and target. The Shoot Boss regaled the shooters with inside story of April 19,1775 and we all worked with our shooters in the coaching department, helping them to move closer to the goal of earning that Rifleman Patch. Saturday's first AQT saw returning Rifleman Adam post a re-qualifying score of 212. The day had moved along well enough that a second AQT was completed and Scot (M1Bull), posted a re-qualifying score of 212, Adam upped his high score for the weekend posting a 221, but the best was Stacey finally breaking through the 200 barrier and posting a 216 for her first Rifleman score ! Stacey happily chose the Purple Rifleman patch and graciously agreed to read the story of Madam Yotnottin and the Purple patch. Josh and Laura were both close posting a 205 and 209 respectively. We finished up the day with the Hits Count Red Coat target showing some improvement from the morning and Scot and Adam again cleaning the target.
Sunday dawned much the same as Saturday and after PICASSO gave us the safety briefing we set about a quick review of the previous day's Points of Instruction. After working through some drills and coaching the day's first AQT was shot and it produced a new Rifleman with Josh posting a 222 ! HUZZA !
Returning Rifleman, Laura, re-qualified for the weekend with a 217.
We broke early for a homemade lunch of chili and cold cut sandwiches with all the fixings, prepared by tinman's lovely wife, as the Shoot Boss presented the Known Distance lecture. After another AQT the Shoot Boss broke up the remaining shooters into two groups for the Parker's Revenge fun shoot that pitted the Veteran Appleseeders ( Nathan, Laura, Scot) against the Younguns ( Grace,Ernie & Josh) with the veterans pulling out the win for their choice of fabulous prizes from the SB goodie box and the Youngins getting a choice from the Appleseed sticker box as a consolation prize.
Two more AQT's were shot with Scot posting a high score of 238 before the grind began to tell on both shooters and equipment. After a break for some history and a pitch for the CMP the final Red coat target was shot. all of the remaining shooters had three hits on at least one of the "D" silhouettes, including our youngest, eleven year old Grace. And Laura cleaned the target to claim a commemorative Quarter from copperhead.
Josh, here after known as Brass, stepped up to grab a bucket and help bail by taking an Orange Hat in the Tinsley family tradition. He will be filling the vacancy in our IIT ranks at Nappnee Conservation club as his sister, PICASSO/ Emily, is a senior in high school and will be graduating in the spring and heading off to collage. I wish her much success in whatever she endeavors to do and hope she will remember this grizzled old Shoot Boss fondly.
A huge thanks to my crew of tinman, PICASSO and Ducky, who made this shoot run so smoothly
To Grace, Ernie, Derek and Nathan, keep working on those fundamentals and you will be rewarded in no time with a Rifleman patch.
Thanks to everyone who came out to join us on this fantastic weekend.
