Title: Tool for extracting 22LR cases that stick in the bore
Post by: Zorak on August 23, 2026, 10:15:26 PM
After too many times I nervously watched the guys at my local club use pocket knife blades to remove stuck cases from 22 chambers, wondering how long it would be before someone got cut, I fired up a search engine and found this: https://aandjsporting.com/the-extractor/

Due to some confusion around a lost package, I ended up with four of these instead of the two I ordered, so I gave the extras to the shoot bosses at the next two events I worked. They reported good results, so given that this is a $7 tool, I felt like other Appleseeders ought to know about it.

I usually smack it with a ramrod down the bore.

Cleaning rod with no tip or a brass patch jag has worked for me.

If you have an out of battery fire and the case head falls free but the casing is stuck in the chamber a pistol, or short, 22 cal. bronze brush on the rod will usually push it out. The brush on the rod should be mandatory after an OOB ammo malf anyways.

Gerber makes this little multitool called the Armbar.  It has small standard head screwdriver as part of it, which is narrow enough to fit inside the extractor recess to pry the case out of the chamber.  That being said, I was unaware that somebody made a dedicated tool for this task, I'm going to order some.

If it works well, I like that it seems like it could do the job more quickly and with less disruption than having the shooter break position to allow use of a range rod, and with less risk of scratching someone else's firearm than using a knife or screwdriver. It also helps model keeping body parts behind the muzzle.

There was a tool called the "Stage Saver" from L3I that seems to be out of production, but it was a fancier version of the same concept: it retracted into a handle with a belt clip and was a list price $60 solution rather than a $7 one.

Essential?  No.  But a little magic trick to a shooter who benefits from an instructor appearing and remedying the immediate problem quickly and efficiently.

I ordered three.
If I can avoid pulling a barrel behind the firing line, that's my preference.

I like the looks of this!

Will place an order soon.

A precision flathead screwdriver.  For the cautious plastic trim removal tools, strong and won't scratch.

Dumb question here about how this tool is designed. Why try to fork under the sides - between the boltface and the rim - rather than going into the extractor cutout and levering against the rim and the ejection port?
