Title: Ear protection for kids-
Post by: agent3006 on August 17, 2026, 09:27:50 PM
Hi-

I am wondering if anyone has noted if there is a specific brand/type of youth ear protection that seems most efficient.

I'm certain that the muff variety is likely best for kids. However, like adult ear muffs, they can interfere with cheek weld. Anyone have an opinion on muffs that are particularly good at allowing a good cheek weld?

I've noticed that foam plugs, while fairly effective, are rarely applied to the ear correctly, especially with kids. Regarding foam plugs, I think we should update users, adults and youth, on how to insert plugs successfully.

Anyone think about this ever? I would like to keep an Appleseed event from being that time someone departed with diminished hearing.

Let me know your thoughts.

For kids I often recommend doubling up. Meaning, foam ear plugs with muffs on top. As you said, make sure the muffs have what's called a shooter's cut. Meaning part of the muffs look caved in. This is to create a proper cheekweld. Muffs without this are only good for pistol shooting or using a chainsaw in my opinion. Keep in mind those doubling up may have trouble hearing ceasefire. If so, station an instructor nearby to tap him on the shoulder. After getting permission to do so of course.
