Following a Friday night of thunderstorms, heavy rains, and tornado watches and warnings in the area, Patriot's Day weekend dawned partly cloudy and cool at Bone Creek Gun Club, a wonderful facility outside of Pittsburg Kansas. Near ideal weather for the tasks at hand.
Seven shooters gathered including three people new to Appleseed and four young people under sixteen to learn marksmanship and listen to stories about their history and heritage.
Saturday consisted of hearing the events of April 19, 1775 and marksmanship lessons and drills. Later in the afternoon, we got into the AQTs where a couple of the students showed their skills. Mason shot a 219 (scoped) and Aaron turned in a very nice 227 (iron sights) and were rewarded with Rifleman patches. The four young shooters were presented with William Diamond patches to commemorate their attendance at an Appleseed event.
Sunday opened with a cool starting temperature in the 30s but warmed nicely later in the day which did not deter the attitudes of the students in the least. More exercises were practiced before moving on to AQTs, the Morgan's Revenge target which was used as a team drill, and the memorial volley was conducted (which I was informed stopped activities at another nearby range as they listened to the roll call of the fallen). Throughout the day, between activities we looked at the time and announced what was happening along battle road at that time of day 251 years ago. Aaron successfully backed up his previous rifleman score with another at 217 before uncorking a 231 prompting what is believed to be the first Distinguished Patch for iron sights awarded in Kansas.
Overall, a very successful weekend, or as another instructor termed it "Appleseed, making weekends great again".

I hope this two day also included one dinner each at Chicken Mary's and Chicken Annie's.
Actually, this year we didn't get to either. The instructor dinner was Italian at Napoli's.
So many restaurants, so little time....
