It was a gorgeous weekend in Des Moines, Iowa!
If you've ever thought about becoming an Appleseed volunteer and wondered if it was something you could do... the answer is yes! Once you've accepted a hat, the best way to turbocharge your skills as an instructor is to attend an Instructor Boot Camp! (We offer them at no charge to new volunteers.)
One of my mentor's, Phenry, once told me, "Everyone needs an IBC, from orange hat to MI." He's right. I learn stuff at every one I attend! Des Moines 3-26 was no different!
Saturday morning came early and we kicked off the Instructor Boot Camp at the Public Safety Building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. My appreciation to Ames (Cort) for helping to arrange the venue and advertise the event locally.
Iowa was well-represented in the room. We began with safety. We jumped into topics of the about Project Appleseed (and what is & it is not) and discussed the Appleseed Guidelines listed in the manual. We covered prone, kneeling, and many other things from a normal "Saturday" at an Appleseed. During a working lunch, we spent time discussing history. The rest of the day we spent in small group exercises.
Saturday evening was a treat for me, as I hadn't eaten at Tasty Taco (a Des Moines legend) in many years. It was good conversation over excellent food.
We reassembled on Sunday morning jumped into instruction. After some administrative stuff, we jumped into Inches-Minutes-Clicks. This is one of my favorites and its great to see folks able to teach with simplicity and precision!
After lunch, we spent time on coaching and some other critical topics.
DES MOINES 3-26! CONGRATULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE!! I hope to work with you at an event again very soon.

I am very grateful for the time the Iowa instructor cadre set aside to attend our Instructor Boot Camp! Iowa brought a nice mix of brand new to experienced instructors. The time invested benefits our state and the students who attend our events.
And special thanks to Maximum Ordinate for investing his time for the benefit of Iowa. We all learned a lot from him. Greatly appreciated! He is always welcome to come back anytime!
