Springing into Texas Action

Our Central Texas Spring KD event in New Braunfels, TX a few weekends ago was set to be a successful event from the start.  We were scheduled to have nine students at this event so almost a full house.  The students who signed up were very familiar with Appleseed and our 25M events, but nearly half of the students have been to our KD event before.  Some of our students were local, and others drove 13 hours from Kansas to come join us once again (Thank You John!!!).

We discussed the various zeroing schemes, trajectory patterns associated with Known Distance Shooting.  While our students absorbed this information, they were asked which zeroing scheme may be best for their usage.  Once our teaching discussion finished up we headed to the 25m firing line and setup for our initial zeroing session.  Luckily, all of our students were able to complete the task rather quickly.  This setup those who would like to use Battle Sight Zero zeroing scheme with a perfect opportunity for success.  Next, we moved to the 100 yrd line and conducted an another zeroing session to allow students who wished to use the Come-Up zeroing scheme a good baseline for making further adjustments from.  After we finished zeroing, we went ahead and completed a Stage 1 string of fire on an actual AQT.   We gave the students a chance to see what the change in trajectory was going from the 100 yrd range to the 200 yrd range before completing a Stage 2 string of fire.  At this point, we took some time to break for lunch and hear about the "War of Regulation and Battle of Alamance".  After a bit of rest, food and refreshments, our students pressed on to the 300 yrd marker and repeated the same process to finish up a good solid Stage 3 of the AQT.  By the time we moved to the 400 yrd line, the students were eager to finish up this first AQT.  Upon checking the targets for our initial KD AQT, it was clear we already had two KD Rifleman scores in the history books!  Daniel (a previous Appleseed Instructor at one time) turned in a great score of 39 hits/214 score!!!!!  Way to go Daniel.  As usual, Randy usually put up an amazing score of 42 hits/231 score!  Impressive as always Randy!

This early completed AQT allowed us to post another one up and try and finish it out before the Texas sun began setting.  Checking our targets between stages was no longer a priority so we simply banged out stage after stage until we finally ended up back at the 400 yrd point to finish up Stage 4.  Having finished our second AQT of the day, we secured the rifles in everyone's vehicles and grabbed some water and snacks to end the day.

We started our second day by testing everyone's ability to prove themselves as one of Captain Morga's Rifleman by taking a cold-bore shot at a small target place 250 yrds away.  I am happy to say Eric and Randy were able to rise to the occasion!!!  Eric basically hit the target in the exact center.  Way to go Eric!!!  Randy nailed it as well - as usual, hahahahaha.  Way to go Gentlemen!  Captain Morgan would be proud.

The morning started out with John dealing with a few equipment issues from the day before (a scope potentially going south on him).  Since John is a true Rifleman, he didn't give up!  He pulled the scope and employed his Backup Iron Sights!  As any Rifleman would, he had his previous data and setting written down in his notebook and was able to become immediately effective on target.  We gather up our equipment, rifles and mats and knocked down two AQTs in the morning and then took a bit of break for lunch.  Our morning efforts resulted in Anand putting down a great KD score of 207!!!  Way to go sir!!!!  On our second AQT of the morning, Anand's rifle started to bog down due to suppressed shooting, so he went ahead and bowed out of the remainder of the event.  Glad to see he took advantage of a working rifle to get his KD score first.  Great job again Anand.

While at lunch I was able to quickly discuss the longer consequences of the War of Regulation discussed previously.  As the Revolutionary War led on, the resentment of the local North Carolinians built up to the point where the long abolished "Over The Mountain Men" became the leading rebellion force in the area.  Captain Furgeson of the Royal regiment found out the hard way they were men who knew very much what they were about during the siege of King's Mountain.  The battle resulted in a significant loss for the British and set about the first domino in the downfall of the King's tyranny over the colonies.

After lunch we did a short Range Estimation Exercise to help everyone realize a Rifleman always has the tools on them to make a good guess about how far away a target is.  We took range estimates of four different objects downrange.  John reaffixed his scope to his rifle for our exercise and put it to great effect.  He was able to get the closest range estimate for three out of five of our downrange objects.  He was kind enough to waive the prizes to the other students.  It was a three way tie with Daniel, Thomas and Eric.  Eric came up with tie-breaker and secured his prize copy of "The Long Range Shooting Handbook" by Ryan Cleckner.  A very good book for Rifleman.  Way to go John, Eric and Thomas!!!!

The day concluded with two final AQT attempts.  While we were able to get more attempts completed for this weekend, our remaining students could not capitalize on them.  This is fully understandable because our weather was good, but certainly warmer than we would have liked it.  Still yet, getting 3 KD Rifleman out the weekend was certainly wonderful to see.

This was a challenging weekend for everyone!  Our environment is not something we can control, just work around.  John H. is a continuing inspiration to all of us.  He faced a failing equipment challenge and worked around it and kept going.  He continues to improve and impress every time he visits.  It was great to have him, as well as all our students, at our event.  Students such as these are the reason we love instructing Appleseed events.  Thank you!!!!

What a darn good way to spend a weekend – with rifles and friends,
