Hey everyone. I own a mossberg 702 plinkster. For the most part it is a fairly accurate gun but it has the most aweful trigger.
Well I set about disassembling the trigger group so I could polish the different mating surfaces. Long story short in the process of taking it apart I got distracted, the assembly fell and the parts flew out of there. I have all the parts but cannot find a print on how they are supposed to go back together.
I managed to get the parts in there in a semi-working fashion but it now has a WAY TOO excessive trigger pull I think it has something to do with the trigger/sear spring.
So my question. Does anyone else have one and if so can they take a picture looking down into the trigger group? I have a marlin 795 now so it isn't really critical but I figure having a spare rifle to lend out might be a good idea. :)
Thanks for you assistance!
You may try e-gunparts (http://www.e-gunparts.com/model.asp?idDept=170) but to be honest, I can't find a reference to a model 702.
The Mossburg web site has an Owner's Manual, http://www.mossbergintl.com/manuals/702_RevD.pdf
The trick on a trigger job is not to change the angles of the sear/hammer, or not too much.
What you are trying to do is polish the mating surfaces. On some really bad triggers you may have to change the angle but be careful not to change them too much. You may not get the hammer to stay cocked; or safe.
Oh I have done a few trigger jobs and know how to do one. I held off on doing the trigger job till I figured out how to reassemble it properly as I figured if I cannot get it back together right then I'll never know if the trigger job was effective. If I had just taken pictures beforehand... %)
She does shoot but has somewhere around a 20lb trigger pull.
I hate to say this but I think I'll have to buy another one just to be able to fix this one's trigger! !@#)
"I hate to say this but I think I'll have to buy another one just to be able to fix this one's trigger!" ;D
I've used that excuse to explain why I had to have another gun on my wife. ::)
Did it have the bad trigger pull before you started, or is this something new?
Looking around the web, I find this rifle is made by the Maverick side of Mossberg. I have a Maverick 88 pump shotgun, a 500 clone. To say it is rough would be a compliment. It had somewhere around a 10 - 12 # pull.
The angle on the sear/hammer was so bad that trigger pull had to move the hammer against the hammer spring before the hammer would release. Stoned the angles down and it now shoots with around a 4# pull.
I would call or write Mossberg and ask for an exploded view of the rifle.
Have fun.
Doug
I fortunately (Or rather unfortunately) only have to justify my purchases to myself. O0 :'( #)
No, it was just a really gritty trigger. It would hop skip and jump whilst squeezing the trigger and would cause some movement in the sights.
Yeah, I'll give mossberg a call again. Last time they told me they didn't have anything past the manual's disassembly instructions.
