Title: Ammo recommendations for 500 yard KD
Post by: DataDad on October 07, 2024, 07:52:24 PM
Hello everyone. I'll be shooting 5.56 at the McMinnville KD this month and would appreciate some ammo brand recommendations. I believe MaximumEffort said we'll be shooting out to 500 yds in likely windy conditions so I'm thinking 75 or 77 grain. Thanks!

Barrel length and twist rate would be helpful.

16" barrel with a 1/7 twist.

If you have the budget for it, Nosler 77 match, but I've also had good results with Norma match grade, both in .223 and .308.
That being said, find what your gun likes in those weight ranges.

Hornady ELD-M or Sierra TMK are also good choices, but I've only used the bullets in reloaded ammo, I can't speak to new cartridges.

If your budget is tighter than that, I've heard good things about all of AAC's heavy 5.56.

Thank you. I think I will work my way up to the Nosler. As of now there's a lot more MOA to be shaved from my technique than from the ammo.

Are there any concerns with shooting the 223 in a 5.56 chamber? I've read that the 5.56 rounds can be hotter and thus should not be used in a 223, but I'm not sure about how it impacts precision.

Thank you. I'm going to test out some Hornady and AAC and pick one for the KD.

If your gun is rated at 5.56, it won't matter once you set your D.O.P.E.
