Great 200-yard Rimfire Known Distance (RKD) in Marriottsville, MD. We had an experienced group of Appleseeders but several were attempting their first known distance event.
After a solid week of rain, we were blessed to have a misty, cloudy day but no rain. With temperatures in the mid-60s, it was also a welcome relief from the hot and humid summer RKD events our team and shooters endured.
We started out at the 50-yard line to establish our initial zero and test scope tracking with a few basic drills before transitioning to the core instruction. We then moved our firing line backwards toward the 200 yard line, with our shooters taking extensive notes and building a Data on Personal Equipment (DOPE) sheet for their rifles at each distance. We saw some awesome groups developing ahead of lunch/
After history at lunch, with great participation from students, we kicked off our first RKD AQT of the day. To save walking, we started at 200 and worked backwards toward the 50 yard line. Jessee J came out of the gate with a 49/50 for distinguished with optics - HUZZAH! Matthew M scored an excellent 45 to earn his RKD rocker as well. Eva T, only 14 years old but an experienced Appleseeder and repeat Rifleman, qualified with a solid 43/50 - well done!
We then conducted a second AQT starting from standing at 50 back to slow fire prone at 200. Scores continued to be in great ranges - Jessee requalified with a 48 and Matt scored 40.
After a break, we had shooters move to the 125-yard line to shoot Morgan's Shingle - Matt M, Mark M, and Eva T all hit and joined Morgan's Riflemen!
We were running a little early and did a final AQT. It was a bit of a war of attrition for that last one as several shooters dropped out as their equipment started to have issues or they got tired. Jessee rounded out the weekend with a 49/50 - his third distinguished score of the day. Jessee only dropped 4 points on 3 AQTs - that is VERY impressive shooting.
We had several people close to qualifying who came up just short - Mark M scored 39 and 37 and Kee T scored a 39. All shooters showed significant improvement and enjoyed the event. I hope everyone returns to try again. I would recommend each attend an additional 25m Appleseed event - the skills we teach at 25m are critical to effective performance during a KD.
Volunteer Off_Paper deployed his target camera system again so that shooters could get target feedback on their cell phones or from an iPad. Thanks also go to Phoebe for making the event a success!!!
Many thanks to our host range AGC. We are so grateful to have access to TWO different 200 yard ranges in Maryland.
