The weekend could not have been better for the Rimfire KD at Sidney, Ohio. The weather was very close to perfect, and attitudes, comradery and joyful enthusiasm was high throughout the two days.
In depth discussions were held about the three challenges of a Rifleman (target detection, range estimation and making the shot). Each of those challenges was reinforced with practical experience and more discussion throughout the weekend.
The range was on a stream valley which allowed us to construct four target lines out to 200 yards. We shot from the top of the valley rim with about a twenty foot rise above the targets. This allowed us to quickly shoot all four stages of the Rimfire KD. We got two Rimfire AQT's shot on Saturday afternoon and five on Sunday.
Nine received the KD Rifleman rocker, (Chad A., Shadow870, Third Degree, Messer 454, Doc Willi, Buzzard, Sparky117, Rob Y. and Rattlehead. Chad A. earned the Distinguished rocker by scoring 48 hits. Both Doc Willi and Chad A. drilled the Morgan's Shingle. Congratulations to all!
Great history presentations were given which included King's Mountain, Timothy Murphy, Ephraim Bank, Ethan Allen and Fort Ticonderoga, and Nancy Morgan Hart.
I would encourage anyone who is serious about learning more about distance shooting to attend a 200 yard rimfire event; it challenged even our most experienced shooters. Don't let the number of patches awarded fool you, it was very difficult! The amount of drop at 200 yards ranged from 40-66 inches (20-33 MOA) depending on ammo and equipment, and even a light breeze played havoc with the rounds.
Thanks to all who attended and helped make the event a fun and successful learning experience.

That is a awesome setup. Congratulations to the folks that made score, hit the shingle, and shot distinguished. Those are some remarkable accomplishments. Indiana has our inaugural 200yd event in October at Jonesboro. I welcome folks to come over and try repeating and sharing the knowledge you learned at this event.
You all let freedom ring loudly at your event :F
This was a great weekend.
As retired LE tactical team member, the block on range estimation using scope markings, hold overs, etc was outstanding. I had only ever used a duplex reticle so all those funny little markings looked cool but seemed to have no purpose....UNTIL NOW!!!
Looking forward to participating in Gibsonburg OH rimfire KD in a few weeks.
I keep learning more and more. Thanks, Shep, for a great weekend!
This was absolutely one of the most fun Appleseed events I have been to and my first rimfire KD. The location was perfect and instruction was on point. Even the food was excellent.
Looking forward to doing more of these. Thanks to everyone who made this event as awesome as it could be.
I definitely agree about the challenge known distance presents to the rimfire cartridge. The shooter needs the additional speed provided by a higher velocity round. My standard velocity ammo was dropping 62+ inches at 200 yards. A switch to CCI Mini Mags (thanks Sheepdog!) cut that drop by half.
This KD event forced each shooter to "learn" their equipment and how to make elevation changes quickly. Over this 2-day event, we were blessed with minimal wind, so windage was not a major factor.
Rush Creek (Sidney) is a terrific venue for KD. For the first stage, we shot down a slope. Each subsequent stage the downward angle decreased.
Congratulations to Chad and Doc Willi on their Morgan's shingle achievement and to the rest of the shooters who earned the KD Rimfire rocker. I was situated on the end of the line next to Jeff and Dell. You two were very close to making the score. Keep up the good work and consider joining us in Gibsonburg for the next KD (in August).

This was a great shoot. I learned a lot such as that the wind really effects 22 at 200 yards.
Here are some pictures.
It was an awesome weekend. The location was perfect. The weather was great. The shooters were very engaged. There is much to be learned from a .22 and judging the wind.
