Participants came from far and wide to attend Appleseed Kansas' first public Known Distance event. We had shooters from Colorado, Iowa, Missouri and Texas as well as the Kansas folk get together on the very nice highpower range at Mill Creek Rifle Club just outside De Soto Kansas.
Weather was pretty good considering what it could be this time of year with temps in the low to mid 80's, mostly overcast with light breezes although one of the visitors was heard to comment that "this is not a dry heat".
There were fifteen individuals signed up for the event and we ended up with fourteen shooters. All fifteen showed up but one had grabbed the wrong rifle case leaving the house and optimistically brought an air rifle to the four-hundred-yard event.
We started off with some lessons and spoke about what might be the same and what would be different from the traditional 25-meter clinics everyone had attended before.
We moved from the classroom to the range and engaged "Morgan's Shingle" before shooting for data at different ranges. Nine shooters were successful in marking the shingle over the weekend. Everyone displayed that they were experienced rifle shooters and quickly put their newfound data skills to work perforating the black portion of their targets.
Saturday generated six riflemen scores and Sunday produced two new and several requalification as well as a distinguished score from a bolt action shooter. Eight riflemen with several others very close to qualifying from a class size of fourteen. HUZZAH!!!

Yes, it was a great weekend and the promises of rain were empty. It was great spending time with people from such diverse places. However, when we get on the range, we all seem to speak the same language, marksmanship and heritage.
