Title: New Orange hat help
Post by: motorcycle_dan on May 29, 2024, 10:41:32 PM
Good day all.  Fresh Orange hat still motivated after my first 25M event with a whole new perspective from behind the scenes.

I'm considering signing up for the KD in New Philadelphia Sep 28 & 29.  I've only shot at 25M events in the past.  Is it okay for me to sign up for that KD without having shot one?

Still stumbling my way around the forum boards.  Couldn't figure out who our state coordinator was or how to contact them. What is the secret code for finding that person?

Thanks in advance

Huzzah!
Well, first things first. The Ohio state coordinator is Shep.
Where abouts are you located? That way someone cam "take you under their wing".
As to the KD, you can sign up tonwork any event that you'd like, many hands make light work. Perhaps I will see you there (depending on work commitments).

Thank you,
I'm located in Mount Vernon OH.  Retired and don't mind traveling.  Former competitive pistol shooter.  Several Appleseed events under my belt but only the 25M events.  I try to bring a friend and or family member with me to the events.  It is my plan to attend the Pistol Clinic in Sidney OH next weekend June 8/9  Looking at the Orwell shoot later in the month.

At the risk of stepping on the Shoot Boss' toes - I've run a number of KD events, and I always appreciate the help of anyone - orange hats included.  Someone still has to call the line.  Someone has to clear the line.  Someone has to help set up the line.  Someone has to help offer feedback to the shooters on improper technique.  This is all things that you can do now.

The KD is in September - if you're feeling crazy, you could even spend some time and prep for one of the histories, or one of the points of instruction.  The Academy page has videos on all of this -
https://appleseedinfo.org/academy/known-distance-videos/

I say all the time that "80% or more of what you need to know to shoot at distance can be taught at 25 meters."  That means that right now, you can still bring a wealth of help.  As a personal benefit to you, you may find that preparing to help work a KD event puts you in a better spot for when you attend a KD event yourself.

You are planning on attending a KD event yourself in the future, right?   ;)

Yes I want to complete a KD.  Actually I want to do all the events that Project Appleseed offers.  I'm volunteering at a pistol clinic this coming weekend but on my to-do list is a rimfire KD as well as a regular KD.

Since a search of the forum didn't turn up what I wanted.  Do you know of a source for the plastic receivers to use on a Ruger 10/22 demo rifle?  Are there any links to people who have built them
Thanks in advance

Can you clarify what you mean by "receiver?"  Are you trying to get the dummy trigger, for example?

We have a Charles (wileycoyote) for setting up our dummy rifles.  I saw him make mine, the one in the picture.  We used the stock trigger from my .22 that I'd upgraded.  He cut some 3/16" rod we got at Home Depot or Tractor Supply.  He has a jig for the holes in the side because he does them for anyone that asks.  If you're just doing one, I wouldn't think it's that difficult to figure out where to drill.  It took a couple of minutes.

He'll be at the KD in McMinnville, TN in October.  Bring your stuff and then shoot a KD too - you said you don't mind traveling, right?

I'd like to build one with a plastic replica ruger receiver.  I'd use PVC pipe as a barrel/laser mount.  I found the plastic clicker triggers on eBay.  I thought they were all one unit, dummy receiver and clicker trigger.  Someone posted a link to the dummy receivers that did not go (or my current level of authorization didn't allow)
