Title: AAR Throop, NY - 4/18-4/19
Post by: dwarven1 on April 20, 2009, 04:16:03 PM
Throop AAR

Saturday - 26 shooters
Sunday - 10 shooters

Riflemen; none  :'(

Throop gathered a LOT of shooters from the EPT program. We had no less than SIX homeschooling families show up, with up to four children in the families. Many of these folks had brand new rifles with them (as in, "we just got this at Walmart last night").

I was ably assisted by B964 NY State Co-ordinator) and Zercool (Brian). Zercool's lovely bride, TheBlonde (Becky) also helped on Sunday with some one on one coaching of a new shooter.

Saturday got off to a slow start with so many new shooters who had to borrow equipment and be shown the manual of arms for their new rifles. Overall, 149 shots went down range on Saturday (which is low for a New England shoot!) and another 460 shots went off on Sunday.

High score on Saturday went to "Tito", a one day shooter, with a 196. He couldn't come back on Sunday, so I gave him some targets and encouraged him to practice and come to more shoots. I forsee a Rifleman patch in his future...

Sunday four out of the six families did not return - I did get an email on Monday morning from one of the families explaining that the kids wanted to come back but were just plain worn out. I feel sure that they will be at the next shoot, though. The two families that did return showed great enthusiasm - from 10 year old Ethan who was struggling with a rifle (10/22) that was just a bit too large for him to his brother Josh who was shooting in the 170's and 180's to shooter Chris who scored a heartbreaking 209... and THREE instructors just couldn't find another point on that target for him. It just wasn't there.

We finished off the day, after the obligatory two Redcoats (one fired volley style, with the names of the Concord and Lexington dead read before each shot), with a volley at a "Zombie Bob" target - the kids seemed to enjoy it. Over 98 percent of the rounds fired at Zombie Bob were head shots... so someone was paying attention.

Overall, a good weekend. We got the history to a LOT of young folks, introduced new shooters to the skill of riflery and related it to the history. The parents seemed to appreciate things, too. I suspect that in the future we will be seeing more of the homeschooling community.

Pictures will follow shortly.

Great shoot, with some VERY motivated shooters.

Four o'clock Sunday afternoon, as we were winding down, more than one shooter was heard to say, "Does anyone have some more ammo??!" We found some - enough to get through one more AQT and a group volley at poor Zombie Bob.

609 rounds? Nickle, I think you're going to be given a run for your money...

I expect we'll see some of those folks back with us at VanEtten, New Breman, and again at Throop in July.

I have to give major credit to the folks persisting through equipment problems - some bad ammo, a lot of brand-new rifles (literally - still in the factory box and plastic wrapper!), failing magazines, factory "sights"...

Chris, we tried ... oh, we tried. 209 and we punched every hole that was even close with a .30 round to make sure.

However, lest anyone think NO ONE shot a Rifleman score for the weekend, I took advantage of the early morning empty range to squeak out a 212 (haven't shot an AQT since July of 08!), and TheBlonde, while not helping with instruction, punched in a 215 just to remind me of my place.  ???

I haven't looked at the camera yet to see what came out, but I think I'll have at least one or two worth posting.

As promised, a couple pictures!

Early Saturday, those 1-inch squares broke a shooter... (Or he just needed to relax for a minute?)

After the 4pm volley: I love the smell of gunpowder in the... afternoon!

That first picture! He so wanted to do it right, but never lost it all to frustration.
As you can see in the second one it was a battle to keep muzzles on the orange line. Grabbing them by the ankles and dragging them back was needed many times.

Zercool, my record is 1100 at the 3 day at Proctor last year.

My line this weekend was low, just 690.

Was it rimfirecentral.com ?

Hey Chris, you don't happen to have a Tech-Sight adjusting tool in your pocket with a B9 painted on it, do you? If so, I can get it from you in Van Etten.

That is precisely the forum I was recommending. They have a very active 10/22 section, and there are some VERY useful stickies in the "Action" section about how to mod your hammer and the bolt release.

Hope your date went well on Sunday, Chris!  ;)

Hey just to be a Pain when displaying the flag in banner fashion the union should be to the left as viewed from the street  ::)

I will stop at complete strangers houses if I see the flag wrong, faded, ripped or other wise disrespected  and and a person in the yard ask them to change it

That was me that hung the flags.
This may be a minor detail, but that is not facing the street. As 99% of our time was to be on the firing line, with the flags at our backs, and to the backs of the SB and IITs, I think they were displayed properly.
Either way, just to let you know, I did debate it several times with myself. Nice to see people still care for the formality's.

Thanks for the link. And lets just say my rifle is much less complicated than the opposite sex ;)

From the number of nice clean new shooting mats in the Throop picture, I'd say Midway faired well.

No worries I was just giving you the business  ;) they looked great  O0

However it is one of those pet peeves for me about proper display of our nation's flag that has cost so much through out our country's history. I take it very seriously at all times  @&)
