I'm contemplating getting some made based on the 3rd NY Regiment. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_New_York_Regiment
Their flag:

During my research, I came across this note: "The flag has been saved and is found in the Albany Institute of History and Art. It is the only regimental flag of New York that has been preserved to the present."
A NY patch would be awesome.

Why thank you, but from what I was told something less Revolutionary War inspired (i.e. unrelated) was already decided upon by the powers that be.

Actually, it's really weird you replied to this post. When I first posted my idea the post was deleted (now I assume just hidden) and immediately texted that my opinion wasn't needed on the matter. I'm surprised to see the post was resurrected.
You guys are welcome/encouraged to work on design concepts for the NY State Patch. We were a ways off from getting any design approved by Appleseed, but I'll share the design concept I had started working on below. You are free to move in a different direction with it. We will make this a collective effort.

That design was loosely inspired by our state patch here in Michigan:

In Michigan, that patch gets awarded to IIT's upon successful completion of their PC3, and to volunteers who travel in from out of state to support our events. We will follow a similar approach in NY. For our dedicated Blue Hats, we can award it based on the number of events worked.
There is quite a bit of effort and planning required to get through the design, approval, and manufacturing stages for an Appleseed state patch - but I'll offer whatever support I can along the way, and we have support/guidance from Mrs. Smith as well. Feel free to post your design ideas in this thread.
Happy to help if needed, guys.
In Texas and NM we also award them upon successful completion of an IBC. Something to kick around :)
Any reason why the patch doesn't tie into NY's Revolutionary War history?
I'm not really good at graphic design but what are the general parameters for a state patch? What is appropriate) inappropriate?
Thanks!

It certainly can! I was drawn to the torch because it's probably the most iconic symbol of both Liberty and New York state. I think any symbolism that draws from Appleseed's tradition of Liberty, Marksmanship, and History would be appropriate, and ideally we could connect that symbolism to NY in a meaningful way. I felt like Liberty's torch would be 'universally recognized', but I'm not opposed to revolutionary war iconography :) Feel free to brainstorm ideas
How about something incorporating the shape of Fort Stanwix?
Or Ticonderoga! Or the ruins at Crown Point! Tough to choose just one fort in NY, but Ticonderoga became pretty important in the weeks immediately following April 19, 1775.
I'm intrigued by the idea of the patch itself being in the shape of a fort, but I'm sure a custom patch shape would require significant investment.
Most embroidered patches are priced by:
Height x width to determine square inches
Percent of embroidery
Up to 7 colors with no extra charge
The fort shape could be enclosed by the overall shape, embroidered wording can go into the added area.
I think that would be awesome to have a NYS patch! There are some great ideas here. The one for Ft. Ticonderoga is a good one. I was curious what might already be out there and came up with these. The one look very similar to the first proposal. The second maybe could be inspiration for a Ticonderoga patch?

Please excuse my crappy art work, but what about something like this? Please feel free to edit/change the design concept. ;D
In hindsight, maybe replace where it says LIBERTY, and put Ft. Ticonderoga there? Just throwing out some ideas.
I spoke to Stacy in NH this weekend. She is the graphic designer who help NH with their patch.
She said she would be willing to help NY with the design of our patch. :)
What would the consences be on reaching out to her to formally ask for her assistance?
We can seek some input from her. Sent you a PM.
Hi will this design work ? I can modify it if necessary. Let me know.

Wow! Great job, Vince! :F
I would propose one change and that would be to change the boot to the Liberty Tourch or a silouette of Ft. Ticonderoga.
Otherwise, very nice!
I think that design is perfect.
If the boot is a reference to the Boot monument at Saratoga I think this is a winner.
If we decide to go with this, how do we proceed getting them made?

I admit I didn't get the boot reference and had to look it up. After reading about the monument presumably to Benedict Arnold and the Battle of Saratoga, I have to agree with Matt. It's perfect as is. :)

Hi, yes, the boot is a reference to the Boot monument at Saratoga Battlefield.

I think you nailed it!
I like this - will seek input from the rest of the volunteer cadre and see if we can get a patch done over the off-season. Thanks Vince!

Multiple resources available through Appleseed based on efforts made in other states, so I'll leverage those channels after we get consensus from the volunteer cadre and then approval from national. There's a few threads I need to dig up.
I like to shoot and stay rifle qualified. Appleseed is a very good way to do this. I also like to collect patches. This patch is a winner! Some states offer a special patch to those who clear a Redcoat target at an Appleseed training event. I'd love to travel to New York to attend an Appleseed event at which I might refresh my rifleman skills and have an opportunity to earn your the patch. How can I know if you have proceeded with the New York patch? I'll need a few months lead time for planning travel and signing up for your event. Thanks.

Hi Scotty! The original intent for the NY patch was to be presented to Project Appleseed volunteers who have dedicated significant time or travel supporting events in the state of New York. This is the approach in other states such as Michigan, and New Hampshire, while some other states award their patches to shooters who are not volunteers for the program. It does seem like we have some demand from shooters to have a dedicated NY patch they can collect by attending events in the state, so we'll need to consider our approach for this in the off-season. Perhaps we'll end up with two patches here - one that is presented to our dedicated volunteers, and another that is eligible to Rifleman who participate in events in New York. I will follow up in this thread and send you a PM once we have our approach figured out for this, but it would be great to have you visit us in New York next season!! Are you based out of Ohio?
